surveillance and public space

SUR VEIL surveillance and public space Kevin Walsh: research proposal Urban public space today is carved up by unseen boundaries of security. This veil of monitored and unmonitored spaces speaks to oppositional tendencies in contemporary society towards both a libertarian desire for individual freedom and a collective desire for personal safety and respect for rule of law. Throughout the past thirty years, a complex web of government- and privately-developed systems have prolerated in Western cities, largely outside of public scrutiny. This research proposes to survey the current extent of this veil of security in Dublin, and to bring that extent to both academic and public attention. Using a web-based, open s ource, public-participation model, private indivi duals will be encouraged to contribute online to a public mapping project to survey the security installations in Dublin city centre.  public space surveilled space safe space unmonitored space aims of the research: document varieties of surveillance systems and devices in use in public spaces in dublin c ity, including technical specications catalogue a vocabulary of spatial situations created by surveillance equipment implement a crowd-sourced survey of surveilllance cameras in Dublin city centre present this data in forms easily incorporated into other research  s Camera Weight (without lens) 6.8oz (193g) [2.3"] 58.4mm [1.52"] 38.6mm [1.31"] 33.3mm FRONT VIEW  C u nt [ .
