Leah Luffman honored at100th birthday partyLeah Luffman, left, a resident at Dunmore Plantation in Dobson, celebrated her100th birthday with her 92-year-old-sister, June Parsons, from Charlottesville,Va., on Sept. 26. Leah was 100 on Sept. 24. About 40 family members andfriends from North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky were present.

With all the hustle and bustle ofthe holidays, we find this an ap-

propriate time to congratulate some ofour area couples who are celebratingwedding anniversaries.

The Loftis family gathered forThanksgiving at the home of Richard andMarti Loftis and the group took that op-portunity to honor June and Jessie Loftisfor their 74th wedding anniversary. Theywere married on Nov. 28, 1935.

Bill and Inez Leftwich Belton weremarried on Nov. 28, 1951. My

husband, Pete, and I were their attendantsso I recall that wedding very well. Can’tbelieve that was 58 years ago.

Don and Evelyn Armstrong weremarried on Dec. 1, 1951, at Ft.

Bragg, where Don was serving with the81st Airborne Division. They laterresided in Atlanta before moving toMount Airy.

1952 graduates ofCopeland High,hold reunion

The 1952 Graduating Class ofCopeland High School met at the home ofJimmy and Elaine Harbour on November14, for their 57th class reunion. JoiningJimmy and Elaine were Geraldine andGilmer Flippen, Katie and WayneDraughn, Nancy Robertson, Frank andWilhelmina McCormick, Garnet and LouRae Atkins, Polly Johnson, Johnny andMaxine Gwyn, Joe Davis, Barbara Gard-ner, Doris Ayers and daughter, Janet.

Joe Davis, from Winston-Salem, was aguest in memory of his late wife, MaryEllen, who was a member of the class.Barbara Gardner’s late husband, CarrollGardner, was also a member of the gradu-ating class. The original graduating classconsisted of 42 members of which 19have passed away.

The group enjoyed a meal of countryham, eggs, sausage, bacon, apples, hashbrowns, redeye gravy, homemade biscuitsand peach cobbler.

The group has been meeting once ayear for many years and plans to continuethis tradition.

Geraldine Flippen gave class memberspictures she made at the last year’s re-union.

Before departing, Elaine presentedeach guest with a gift bag.

Bunke named ABWA Business Associate of the YearThe Granite City Charter Chapter of the ABWA

named Paul Bunke as the Business Associate of theYear during a recent dinner meeting at Cross CreekCountry Club. The presentation was made by SharonHall, vice president of the organization and branch of-fice administrator at Edward Jones Investments

While presenting an engraved plaque to Bunke,Hall commented about her boss, “He is a busy man asfinancial advisor at Edward Jones Investments by daybut he also transforms into a coach of his son’s middleschool basketball team. He is a deacon at Temple Bap-tist Church, interim pastor at Eastside Baptist Churchand has a family ministry,

“He is a member and officer of the Business Net-working Group in Surry County and is a past memberof the Dobson Lions Club, Surry Scan and DobsonFriends of the Library. Paul is a very supportive boss,husband, dad and friend. His passion rings true whenyou spend time with him,” she added.

Bunke and his wife, Rebecca, have six boys, PJ,Joseph, Caleb, Joshua, Daniel and John David. Adrunk driver took the lives of two of their preciouschildren.

Hall went on to say that Paul loves the Lord andhas a heart as big as the world for his family.”

Also honored was Billie Nell Hiatt, who wasnamed “Woman of the Year.” Ashly Lancaster madethat presentation with an engraved plaque for the hon-oree. She noted that Billie Nell has been with ABWAfor 30 years and always tries to make sure that every-one is involved. “I feel from what I have seen person-ally that she devotes a lot of time and energy intoABWA. I don’t ever recall a meeting she wasn’t there.She is a past secretary, treasurer, vice president andpresident in 1991 and 1999. She is a model ABWAmember,” Lancaster concluded.

Lori Poindexter, president of the local chapter,presided during the evening. Martha Hall, co-chair ofthe event, introduced Jim Grimes as guest speaker.

Billie Nell Hiatt and Joan Gammons were recog-nized as the two charter members attending the meeting.

Copeland graduateshold 50th year reunion

Graduates of Copeland High Schoolcelebrated their 50th year class reunion onOct.14 at the Lantern Restaurant in Dob-son with good attendance. One classmate,upon arrival, announced, “I almost didn'tcome because I was afraid there would bea lot of old people here.”

Peggy Wall said, “Old is not how onewould describe those present. The moodwas quite jovial.”

She then lead the group in remember-ing the 11 classmates who had not sur-vived. Wilbur Shinault read the namesand a brief period of silence was observedin tribute to their memory.

Graduates introduced their spouses andprovided updates on their accomplish-ments. Food and conversation ensuedwith each table enjoying discussions rele-vant to their own interests.

Martha Lane fulfilled the request froma classmate to do a routine from the seniorplay of many years ago. The routine wasmost beautifully executed - as if she justperformed it yesterday, according to Wall.

The reunion was a fun event witheveryone enjoying the event.

Winning chickensFive-year-old Jessica Shelnutt entered three of her chickens in the Surry County Agricultural Fair and received two first-place ribbons and a second-place ribbon. She actually aided in incubating the eggs and hatching out the chickens. Shealso helped her stepfather, Doug Odell, build the lot to keep them in and helps daily in feeding and taking care of the flock.Since receiving her honors, Jessica has three more sets of eggs to hatch and has quite a few chickens now.
