Surrey Short Breaks for Disabled Children
Autumn Newsletter 2012
Welcome to the Autumn 2012 edition of the Surrey Short Breaks Newsletter!
The Short Breaks team has been out and about across the summer at short break
schemes, consulting with children, families and professionals and working together with
short break providers to improve services for children and young people in Surrey.

In other news, The Short Breaks Team is currently in the
process of developing various publications aimed at
Parents & Carers’ of SEN and disabled children in Surrey:
The Short Breaks Leaflet will outline what short breaks
are, the types of short breaks available in Surrey and how
they can be accessed.
The Short Breaks Directory will provide an overview of the
individual organisations providing the services in Surrey
along with useful links to other services.
Before going to print, the team will be working closely with
Family Voice Surrey to obtain their feedback on the
information provided...Watch this space!
Another event we were very pleased to be part of was the
Disability Challengers Family Fun Day on the 20th July.
Here we met Matthew Kelly and some of the players from
the amazing Guildford Heat basketball team, but more
importantly we met some lovely families, children and
young people! We were also found supporting children
and young people testing out the wonderful adapted bikes
from the extremely popular new ‘Wheels for All scheme!’
We have also been attending various events to share our short break information and
resources including two information events for parent support groups in Surrey run by
‘Contact A Family.’ Here there were talks from the Family Information Service, Family
Voice Surrey, Parent Partnerships, and workshops on information provision and family
support. These were a great opportunity to meet new families and professionals and talk
about how we can deliver information for parents now and in the future.

PARENTS REMAIN RESPONSIBLE FOR CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES
Information for Carers
The Carers’ Breaks scheme allows GPs to prescribe payments of up to £500 to carers.
This can either be used to pay for replacement care while they take time out from their
caring responsibilities or to buy goods or services, which will help take the stress off their
caring role. To be eligible for a payment, carers must be registered with their GP as a carer
in Surrey. GPs, who are registered with the scheme, decide how much to pay, depending on
clinical need and the resources available. Payments are administered by SILC.
Merrow mum Gilly Walker is the 1,000th carer to be
prescribed a Surrey GP Carer Break under a scheme launched
by NHS Surrey, in partnership with Surrey Independent Living Council (SILC)
and Action for Carers (Surrey) last December.
If you are interested in receiving a Carer’s Break payment, please discuss this with your GP.
If your GP has not yet registered with the scheme, they can find out more at
www.gpcarersinfo.co.uk.
What is the CAF?
The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) is a new way of working with children and
young people. An assessment is a simple way of gathering information and recording it in an
organised way. Actions will be agreed with you and your child to make sure your child gets
the right sort of help.
How will the CAF help?
The CAF involves listening to you and your child's needs as well as what is working well in
your child’s life. By working together with you, we can help your child receive the right
support at an early stage, before a small need grows into a larger one. The CAF will ensure
that everyone involved with your child, such as teachers, health visitors, or nursery staff
work together to support your child.
What happens next?
Based on the information you and your child provide, all those who can help you or your
child will create an action plan and work together to provide the support your child needs.
Professionals who complete a CAF may also be able to apply for Carers’ Break funding
from Surrey County Council to meet your identified support needs.

10k Grant Programme 2012-2013
For successful applications, the
money awarded must be spent and
services must be provided between
the 1st April 2012 and the 31st
March 2013.

During 2011-12, the following 10K

The Short Breaks 10K grant programme was initially
introduced by Surrey during the Aiming High for Disabled
Children programme in 2010, and is now continuing into its
third year!
The grant for up to £10,000 can be used to fund projects and programmes that provide
short breaks to children and young people in Surrey. Over the next two pages, you will
see just a few organisations out of many that have received 10k grant funding to run
schemes and services.
Since 2010, the grant programme has provided various organisations with funding for a
variety of projects across Surrey including group activities and holidays, one-off events,
school holiday schemes, Saturday clubs, arts and crafts events and much more. Some of
the above were so successful that we have since converted them to regular schemes!
If you know of or are involved in an
organisation, scheme or group that

Many of you may have seen the mystical Supernature installation in
the Jubilee Wood at Stoke Park, Guildford after the Olympic Torch
celebrations. If you were wondering who was responsible – two of the
artists involved are Debi and Jono Retallick of Metal Monkeys.
Metal Monkeys received a 10K grant earlier this year to run some great workshops. And the good news is they’re back in the autumn with 2 more!
Portrait Photography Workshops - 5 Saturday sessions
The workshop will involve participants learning the basic considerations for photography;
exploring using a digital camera and combining drawing with photography, producing a
collage effect. Participants will make a photo album of their work during the project.
Printmaking and Hand-made Books – October Half Term
The print making project explores different printing techniques based on drawings made
during the first session. The workshops will experiment with mono printing, lino printing
and collagraph. Participants will design and make their own book, learning simple
bookbinding methods to display their best/favourite prints.
29 Oct-1 Nov, 10am-2.30pm, Painshill Park, Cobham.
Both workshops are suitable for young people between 11 and 16 with Aspergers, ADHD,
high functioning Autism or similar disabilities and physical disabilities.
10K Grant Schemes
Rhythmix is one of the UK’s leading music charities, delivering a
large range of music making opportunities for young people across
the South East region. Since 1999, Rhythmix has worked with more than
40,000 young people, enabling their creative activity through music and
developing their personal and social skills
Following a 10K grant last year, Rhythmix will build on their successful pilot programme
over the course of this year to deliver a new Music Workshop Programme in conjunctions
with special schools in Surrey.
The programme will run as After School Clubs at a variety of schools including
Woodlands School, Gosden House School and Woodfields School for 10 week
programmes for 6-8 young people per session.
For more information visit www.rhythmixmusic.org.uk or call 08701 417484.
Many already enjoy the Children’s Trust Holiday Play Camps during the Easter, Summer
and Christmas holidays which provide children and young people the opportunity to enjoy
play and leisure activities and have fun in a safe and caring, child-centred environment.
Every child is supported on a 1:1 basis to ensure their specific needs are met and that
they can participate in all the activities they wish to. Activities are all adapted for the
individual child or young person’s abilities and include visits from entertainers, music and
sensory sessions, arts and crafts, sensory play, cooking, games and sports, soft play,
walks to the local village duck pond and park and lots more.
The extension to provide Saturday clubs will now allow children and young people with
multiple disabilities and complex healthcare needs this regular opportunity for play and leisure whilst providing their parents with a valuable short break.
For more information and to book on to any of the above schemes, please call Louise
Gray on 01737 365837 or email [email protected].
Following an extremely popular and successful pilot with
funding from the Surrey Short Breaks 10K grant programme,
the Children’s Trust will now be extending their already
wonderful play and leisure provision!
From September 2012, the Children’s Trust will be running 3
Saturday clubs per term for children and young people with
multiple disabilities and complex healthcare needs!
We are please to announce that the Normandy based Therapy
Garden has been successful for a second year’s 10k Grant!
The Therapy Garden will be running more of their gardening day
breaks, for 1-2 days a week during school holidays.
The emphasis is on having fun with gardening, without
the constraints of having to study as part of a course.
Young gardeners can take part in a number of different
activities, from learning how to grow and care for plants, to
propagating and using the polytunnels. Last year they had
great success making scarecrows, wind chimes and bird balls
(for the birds visiting the garden to feed on), and creative
activities such as painting ceramic pots for the garden.
There are 20 places each day, aimed at ages 13-18. Cost £12 per day (concessions for
low income). The next gardening day is planned for 31 October, 10am-4pm.

Short Break Capital Grants! The British Disabled Waterski and Wakeboarding Association!
The British Disabled Waterski and Wakeboarding
Association’s centre at Heron Lake, Wraysbury,
recently received £110,000 capital grant funding
from Surrey Short Breaks for Disabled Children.
After many months of mud and machinery, their works
(involving pile drivers, major underwater excavation and
bank reinforcement) are now completed!
On a wet and windy day in June 2012, Julie Pointer and
Joanna Woodward attended the official opening of the cable
and jetty.
A new accessible pan-disability jetty allows a wide range of users with disabilities to
access the facility in a safe and accessible environment, and features:
•movable hoist to safely transfer users into equipment and boats
•wider jetty to enable 2 wheelchairs to pass safely
•access ramps and stable working platforms for easier transfer
•permanent bespoke dock for wheelchair accessible boat.
A new two-way cable tow:
•allows water entry without a boat
•allows users to learn to do deep-water starts in a safe,
non-threatening environment
•allows users to ride the cable tow as a standalone activity
•permits quicker progression of skills.
Heron Lake is the national centre of excellence for disabled water skiing and wakeboarding in
the UK. They pride themselves on being able to offer anyone a waterskiing experience, no
matter what their disability. Adaptive water skiing offers a level of excitement rarely matched,
and can offer a sporting outlet to people with disabilities who are limited in participation in other
sports. It is a unique facility, as it is the only lake in the world that provides bespoke, full time
facilities for the disabled.
Last year the facility provided for approximately 600 children. As a charity, they operate to cover their running costs and not for profit. Many of Surrey’s organisations and special
schools that work with children and young people with disabilities use the facility for day
events and for overnight stays. Heron Lake is also available to individual families to book,
which enables a whole family to participate in a sport that they can enjoy together.
The lake is at Wraysbury, a couple of minutes’ drive
from junction 13 of the M25, but despite its proximity
to the motorway and Heathrow, is a surprisingly
peaceful wildlife haven.

It’s a really exciting time for Link Leisure!
The office team has recently moved into temporary accommodation to clear the
way for our main building to be completely refurbished! In March 2013 we will have
brand new facilities including a hygiene suite, sensory rooms and gardens, outside play
areas, accessible kitchens and a drop-in centre. We can’t wait to get into our new
building and providing even more fantastic services for our users.
Our annual Football Fun day was a great success. As teams competed for glory on the
Meadow Sports pitch, fans enjoyed cakes made by our supporters from Hoe Bridge
School, horse rides from Super Duper Farm, golf lessons, ballet from Rebecca’s Dance
School and a tug of war. Despite the rain and wind, everyone had a wonderful day!
Our High Notes Choir recently held a concert, accompanied by Guildford Symphonia.
Over 70 people enjoyed listening to our very own version of Stomp, some classic Bond
themes and music from Star Wars. The Choir has also been busy practising their
acapella skills with VOCES8 and continue to get better every time! They will soon be
getting some further inspiration by seeing Singing in the Rain in the West End.
We have been busy with our Summer schemes, with
activities running every single weekday! We visited the
animals at Bockett’s farm and Marwell Zoo, we were visited
by the animals from Crocodile Encounters, we had cooking
lessons, got extremely wet at Heron Lake and much more!
After an action packed trip to Centre Parcs, we rounded off
the summer with an awards evening to
celebrate the achievements of our young people.
In September we are looking forward to taking part in the first Surrey Supercycle, with our
partners in the Surrey Play and Leisure Consortium.
In the Autumn we will be starting music therapy sessions, drama workshops and
continuing our weekly youth clubs, Saturday play schemes, swimming and dance.
Even though we are currently away from our building,
we are as busy as ever providing sport and leisure
activities for children and young people in Woking and
Surrey Heath, and very excited about the wonderful
opportunities we will provide in the future!

In the Spring newsletter it was announced that Surrey was successful in its bid to
become a Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Pathfinder.
For more information about Saturday Job Clubs running from September, contact:
EmployAbility: Tel: 01483 519690 or via email: [email protected]
Since then the project has progressed rapidly and the publication of the Government’s ‘Next
Steps’ paper has shown there is an intention to bring new legislation within this parliament to
improve the experience for children and young people with SEND. The work we do within the
Surrey SEND Pathfinder will help to shape this.
The focus has been on designing the new 0-25 single education, health and care plan which is
more outcome focused, is less repetitive and has greater ownership by children and young
people. This is being adapted to create a more relevant version for young people aged 14+.
Work has now begun on developing the integrated assessment process which surrounds this
single plan while also looking at the workforce development needed to support this including
exploring the role of a Key worker. The aim is to recruit 30 to 40 families from September to trial
this new plan and assessment process.
The work streams Preparing for Adulthood 14+, Personal Budgets and the Local Offer have also
progressed by holding workshops, scoping and starting on identified tasks.
Two successful information events have been held introducing the Surrey SEND Pathfinder to a
wide range of people from all agencies and included talks from the Department for Education,
Department of Health, the SE7, Family Voice Surrey, the Voluntary & Community Sector and
Surrey County Council.
For more information you can visit www.SE7pathfinder.co.uk
Employability hasbeen running Saturday Job Clubs with
funding from both Surrey Children’s and Adults’ Services.
Another young man had wanted to work at a local restaurant for a long time but did not have
the confidence to apply. However after attending the clubs for a few weeks, he was
successfully employed at the restaurant, clearing tables and preparing the cutlery. Needless
to say he is now over the moon!
One young man had stopped attending school, but with the support from the EmployAbility job
clubs he attended two work experience placements and is now employed in an office!
Family Voice Surrey is the county's independent parent-carer forum, we’re here to
bring a strong voice for parents and carers of children with SEN and disabilities in Surrey.
In the last six months, we've been offering parental perspectives on shaping the Surrey
pathfinder trials for the new special educational needs reforms being proposed by central
government. We have also provided training for parents in Education and the Equality
Act.
We're looking to increase our membership and have just launched our brand new website
www.familyvoicesurrey.org. From here you can sign up for newsletters, ask to come to a
meeting, find out what’s on offer for children with Special Educational Needs and
disabilities and find out how to get involved. You can also contact us through any of the
contact details on the poster above.
Our plans for autumn/winter are to arrange an event or events to hear more views on
what you need, more information to follow.
Wheels for All!
Hello! My name is Matthew Wing and I have
recently been appointed as the new Wheels
for All co-ordinator for Surrey!
Thanks to the support from Surrey Short Breaks for Disabled Children, we have been
able to fund 30 adapted bikes which will be used in various locations in Surrey.
My role is to help inspire, encourage, train and support all of our users so these bikes are kept
busy! Cycling is a fantastic way to meet new people, make friends and to get active.
Wheels for All Surrey is the latest in a network of national recognised inclusive cycling projects
supported by the charity Cycling Projects. The project is designed and developed over time to
encourage steady progression in a fun environment for all levels of experience. The aim is to
enable everyone to experience the joy and benefits from cycling, particularly aimed at:
•Individuals with restricted mobility who may not be able to use a regular two-wheeled cycle
•Children and Young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders who have severe learning
disabilities or behaviours which are challenging
Families who want to experience cycling together and who may not currently be able to due to
an individual family member’s disability.
The projects aim is to develop regular inclusive ride opportunities in Ewell, Guildford and
Reigate. However, with the right wheels under us, who knows where we could end up
cycling to!
Over the coming months I hope to prove that the health benefits of getting on a bike are often
only the tip of the iceberg. There are the social benefits – sport and exercise can help you get
out, meet people and make friends. There are also enormous personal benefits – everyone
feels better about themselves after exercise (honest!) which boosts self-confidence in all areas
of life. Achieving a goal, however small, also brings satisfaction.
As well as supporting local inclusive cycling activities the project will also be looking to train
parents and volunteers as Wheels for All Leaders. Please do contact me if you or anyone you
know may be interested in taking part in the next one day training course.
The Wheels for All project has a great opportunity to
provide a friendly, safe and fun environment for
developing cycling skills for all and to take a lead in
opening up new paths and promoting friendly group
activities that can inspire others, irrespective of their
individual ability or obstacles.

Young Assessors SchemeThe young assessors scheme is a stamp of approval for young people’s services specialising in supporting
those with disability. It is awarded by disabled people aged 13-20 years old who have been trained as young assessors. They assess services, organisations and projects against set conditions and deliver specialised
recommendations to the service to make it more relevant, attractive and efficient to disabled children and
young people. Services and organisations who receive this award shows that a they meet the needs of children and young people.
Young Assessors will receive the ASDAN Award of Personal Effectiveness Level 1 Qualification for taking part in the programme and gain the following skills:
Social interaction with their peers
Confidence, independence and self esteemDecision making & communication
Writing, interviewing and data collection.
Becoming a young assessor is fun and ensures that your voice is being heard.
Services to be looked at first are the play and leisure services.
Call the Participation Worker if you are keen to get involved!
The aim of the Moving Forward Project is to empower disabled young people, to improve their independence, to enable them to
have new experiences, to provide opportunities to socialise and
make friendships and to give them a voice to express their views on services, community resources and issues that affect their lives.
Individual Outreach and life skills support will be aimed at young people aged 13–20 years. Participation activities for the 5-20 age
