'Going the distance!'

It doesn't matter what you do in life, if you're going to do it well

then you have to put in a decent amount of effort. But if you want to do it better than those around you then you have to put in even more effort than that! And however hard that effort might become you just

have to keep on trying, you just have to go the distance!

So this issue is full of surfers who are doing just that – going the

distance! From surfers travelling the length of the land to surf that

perfect southern secret spot to surfers journeying the entire globe simply to seek out the best waves on offer in any given season, all of

them are putting in that extra bit of effort to ensure they're pushing

their own surfing to the limits! And hopefully as you now go on and see what they've all achieved, it might inspire us all to get amongst it, get

out there and get shredding too!

In this ever more digitalised world, the age old notion of simply setting off on a road trip and

coming across some epic secret spot with nobody else out leaving perfect peaks all to yourself

seems almost inconceivable. Nowadays it's all Google this or Instagram that meaning any epic wave found is all over the web in seconds! So in

this issue we pay homage to the secret hot spots around the world as Chris Hartl and her surfing son Noah Gonzalez go in search of secret spots

in the south of the island of Fuerteventura.

Punta de Jandia, the perfect semi secret hot spot!

Page 34: Surphang Magazine Issue 15

Hot SpotsHot Spots

First of all, before going any further, it's important to point out that this is not about to reveal the

whereabouts of every secret spot in the south of Fuerteventura! Not at all! The main spot in the south of the island is actually called 'Secretos' though simply because it is an area thriving in many breaks unknown to the masses and is a haven for the locals where they can surf those

perfect barreling peaks all to themselves!

And after all that's what secret spots are about – those in the know having the chance to keep their

So next time you turn up at your destined surf spot and curse the crowds who've beaten you to it, it may be worth remembering that well before Google came along, the notion of a search meant

getting out there and seeking out your own secret spot. Perhaps then you could be scoring unridden,

Although they scored some epic waves, there were days when the swell would typically drop away though this didn't necessarily mean the waves would disappear...

Surfng is ultimately all about a harmonious existence between water and wind that forms into swell and thus

creates waves. Mix in a talented surfer and the package is complete. Or is it? There's a lot more to the human side of

surfng than just the guy who rides the board. After all the other guy who made that board is pretty crucial too! Plus

if we're to share in this harmonious existence then the guy in the water capturing it on camera also has a role to play!

So we decided it was time to readdress that balance which means taking a look into the world of a shaper and a shooter

as well as a shredder in this issue's special “Hot Shots' feature.

Next IssueWhere does the time go? Now a year since we

were bringing you shots back from our first Transatlantic trip to California and the talent that breeds along those shores, we decided,

inspired by the stunning shots of far flung places popping up in our inbox, that it was

time for another globe trotting trip seeking out tomorrow's hot surfing talent! So having been west, this time we headed east, a long

way east and jetted half way round the world to none other than Australia where surfing

isn't just a sport, it's very much a lifestyle! It's not really surprising then that many of the

Hot 100 surfers of the junior ranks hail from this sun drenched, surf rich paradise. And of

course we managed to catch up with many of them on our travels. So be prepared for the

next issue full of talent from down under!
