Surgical Approach CoursesBesançon, November, 27 – 29, 2008

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is a great pleasure for me to invite you to the first IBRA Surgical Approach Course in Besançon (France) in November 2008. Surgical approaches to the face are one of the basic knowledge every maxillofacial surgeon should master in his vocational training but this is sometimes difficult to achieve on the job. That is why the Education Committee of the IBRA and myself wished to organize a hands-on course program dedicated on this topic. It is thought as a very practical program based on theoretical lectures and, of course, including dis-section exercises on fresh cadaver heads.

This first course will focus on orbital approaches and to lateral approaches of the face. We tried to call on some of the most prominent experts in this field, well-known for their surgical and teaching skills. Every participant will be able to perform each of the approaches, in a step by step procedure, under the supervision of a selected team of instructors. Every single approach will be associated with a particular goal to achieve (as, for example, optic nerve decompression through latero-nasal approach), to make exercises even more practical and attractive.

Besançon, capital city of the Franche-Comté (a region located at the foot of the French Jura mountains), remains a relative small town and is endowed with a unaffected life-style.So, we will do our best to keep a simple and cordial atmosphere during the meeting.

The whole organizing team is looking forward to welcome you in Besançon for an at-tractive and formative experience.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Christophe Meyer, MD - PhD Department for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery University Hospital of Besançon, France

The Jean Minjoz University Hospital, locatedin the inner suburbs of Besançon, was ope-ned in 1984. It was built in order to unblock the oldest Saint-Jacques Hospital located downtown and which has become pro-gressively unsuited to take charge of the increasing number of patients. The Jean Minjoz Hospital itself is now undergoing a great restructuring in order to be able, within a few years, to take over all the uni-versity health cares of the Franche Comté,inhabited by over 1.1 million residents.

The new Anatomy Laboratory, previously situated downtown, is a modern facility located since 2007 in the Ambroise Paré medical university area, in walking distance from the Jean Minjoz Hospital. This labo-

ratory is fitted out with modern teachingequipment, well suited for lectures anddissection workshops.

Besançon (130000 residents), the ca-pital city of the Franche Comté region, is located at the foot of the French Jura mountains. Traditionally associated, as its close neighbours, Switzerland, with clock and watchmaking industry, theindustry of this region had to develop in other sectors after the dramatic collapse of this activity in the 80ties. It is now mainly turned into micro- and nano-technologies in the field of industry and healthcare. How-ever, Besançon and its region keep a rural style. The city itself is one of the «greenest» French cities as it owns the greatest forestedarea of the country. It is also regularly citedas one of the top French cities for life qua-lity. The old town and its ancient stone-built houses, nestled in a natural loop of the Doubs river, are worth to be visited. The citadel of Besançon, one of the most remarquable example of Vauban‘s war architecture, is (since 2007) an official can-didate to become part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
