At first acquaintance, you might think Cargo Fleet Chemicals is merely the UK's best source of petrochemical derivatives. Its 13,000m liquid storage and handling facility and flexible delivery systems certainly convey that impression. But when you've benefited from its reliable and economical contract filling and packaging services, or been struck by the ingenuity of its product development division, you begin to realise this is a rather special kind of chemical company.

Introduction

Existing surfactants directories tend to focus on product identification by tradename, producer or chemical type, enabling the user only to identify product equivalents and surfactant suppliers. Application information, where available, is usually scant or given as a footnote. This new directory approaches the identification of surfactants primarily from the applications standpoint. Hence the formulator or end-user can readily assess the products available for use in a particular industry sector and select materials giving the required surface active properties. For example, a formulator of agrochemicals for crop protection can turn to the section which refers to surfactants for use in the agrochemical industry and then easily identify a wetter/dispersant system for the production of water-dispersible granules.

Information is presented in an alternative format in the second part of the directory, which will help the user to identify swiftly products for a particular application by surface active properties.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to identify an industry which does not directly or indirectly utilise surfactants. Therefore it has proved necessary to simplify industry classifications to encompass a variety of uses under broader sector titles. The industry classifications adopted here have been used in many previous publications and papers, and define as accurately as possible the major industries and applications serviced by the surfactant industry.

The editors have been particularly pleased with the support and response of the industry in the supply of data. Most of the major suppliers of surfactants provided extremely detailed submissions for this first edition, and in fact the information supplied proved to be about three times the quantity of data originally anticipated. This is very encouraging but has meant that processing of the data for this first edition has taken much longer than originally anticipated. However, the format is such that future editions can be readily amended and updated, and we plan to revise the directory every few years.

In cases where producers only supplied trade literature, the editors have attempted to abstract the most important application information, to the best of their ability. Whilst this directory is thought to contain an accurate record of products available from the listed suppliers in 1989, it is essential that end-users confirm availability with suppliers beforehand when contemplating use of a particular product. Whereas many surfactants listed here will be part of well established product ranges, it is in the nature of this field that companies will continue to develop new or improved performance products to offer for specific applications. Finally, it is hoped that both contributors and users of this directory will communicate any corrections, additions or constructive comments on the format and content to the editors direct or via the publishers. All existing contributors of data will be formally contacted well in advance of the revision date of future editions, so that their entries can be updated and amended.

Acknowledgments The editors wish to thank Joan Podmore, Janet McKenzie, Marion Riley, Stacey Jones and Russell Hadfield for their many hours of sustained effort in the production of this directory.

A note on company names and ownership Company ownership in the surfactants industry continues to be in a state of flux, with many company name changes resulting from takeovers and mergers. Wherever possible the present company name, or reference to the parent company, are shown in this directory. In cases of recent ownership changes, the old and new company names are cross-referenced. However, since finalisation of the text, further changes have occurred and it is inevitable that some companies will still be referred to by their former titles (e.g. Bevaloid Ltd., A.B.M. Chemicals Ltd., Manchem Ltd., GAP Europe etc. are now all part of Rhone Poulenc). Wherever possible, the head office of a company is listed first, together with its subsidiary companies and agents. In a few cases, a subsidiary company is listed first where this may be the main unit manufacturing or selling that company's surfactant range.

Disclaimer While every care has been taken to reproduce accurately the information supplied by the surfactant producers listed in this publication, the publishers and editors accept no responsibility for any inaccuracies that may appear. Likewise no warranty is offered concerning the suitability of a product appearing in the text for a particular application. Users should always consult their suppliers to confirm product availability, application recommendations, and to obtain product specifications, application data sheets, and health and safety information regarding the correct handling of such materials.

The recommendation of a specific surfactant for a particular application does not imply that the product is free from any patent restrictions. End-users must undertake patent searches, particularly concerning more specialised or unusual applications areas, and consult their suppliers.
