Supporting Vietnamese pangasius producers towards sustainability
Addressing sustainability issues in pangasius farming will work twofold. 1 It will help to create a future proof, sustainable and economical viable pangasius industry in Vietnam. 2 It will help to get better access to European and North American consumer markets.
The ASC Accelerator helps farmers to comply faster to ASC standards, by giving them guidance, helping them to prepare work plans and sharing costs of technical assistance, trainings, consultancies and capacity building.
The ASC Accelerator helps traders to organize their supply of ASC certified pangasius, strengthening their relation with supplier and create meaningful impact on the water.
ASC Accelerator ASC provides an internationally accepted standard for environmental and social sustainability of Vietnamese pangasius. But the certifica-tion process requires significant upfront investment by the farmers in a short period of time.
To support the producers on the way to ASC certification, the ASC Accelerator was created by the IDH, the Sustainable Trade Initative, SNV and leading European pangasius traders ( Binca, DKSH, Femeg, Mayonna, Nordic Seafood, Queens and Seafood Connection) in close collaboration with WWF, the Vietnamese government, Vasep and Vinafis.
IntroductionThe world’s appetite for pangasius is booming. In the last 20 years Vietnamese export of pangasius has grown over 50 fold! This has been driven largely by the expansion into European white fish retail markets.
The explosive growth of the pangasius industry has brought economic welfare but also claims and criticism concerning the sustainability of pangasius farming. These claims affect the reputation of the Vietnam-ese pangasius sector and endanger the export market.
Over the last few years, the fish farming industry, NGO’s and scien-tists have jointly developed criteria for responsible pangasius farming. These are the ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) standards for pangasius. In Europe and the US the demand for sustainably produced and ASC certified pangasius is growing.
