Our Partnership with

the New Teacher Center

• NTC has partnered with Volusia County Schools with the 3 year SEED grant.

• Awarded VCS over $1.4 million dollars to support our instructional coaches

through the SEED grant which consists of funding for an Instructional Program

Lead, 3 Lead Coaches, and professional development and online tools to

effectively coach and mentor teachers.

• NTC is also partnering with Baltimore County Public Schools in Maryland and

supporting their coaching program through the SEED grant.

The New Teacher Center

• National non-profit organization dedicated to improving teacher

effectiveness and increasing student outcomes.

• Same organization we partnered with for our PARs.

• Stetson and Bethune-Cookman University have partnered with NTC

through the VCEE (Volusia Center for Excellence in Education) grant,

with the focus of working with teachers on building content-knowledge.

Goals of the Grant

1. Increase teacher effectiveness and student outcomes

2. Increase coaching intensity and instructional focus

3. Increase teacher academic press and growth mindset

4. Build VCS capacity within our coaching program

5. Understand the impact of coaching in terms of qualitative and quantitative data

Structure of the Grant

• 50% of our elementary schools and 50% of our middle schools will be randomly selected

by NTC to participate in this program for the first 2 years. This will be about 30 schools.

High schools will not be included.

• NTC will select schools to receive the NTC support before the end of this school year.

• During the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, the instructional coaches at the selected

schools will receive professional learning and support through NTC, the Instructional

Program Lead, and Lead Coaches.

• Focus will be Reading and Math; however, all instructional coaches at the selected

schools will receive professional learning and support through NTC.

What about those schools not selected?

• For those schools (including high schools) not selected in the first

2 years of the grant, our instructional coaches will continue to

receive professional learning and support through our VCS

What happens during the 3rd year of the grant?

• During the last year of the grant in the 2018-2019 school year, all

instructional coaches across our district will receive NTC

coaching support and/or training.

School Principals

• School Principals at the selected schools will:

• Receive professional learning through NTC.

• Collaborate with district personnel to discuss coaching and teacher needs.

Instructional Program Lead

• Position fully funded by grant.

• Leads the planning, development, implementation, scheduling, and evaluation of all instructional coaching

program components.

• Coordinates and co-facilitates professional learning.

• Develops instructional coaching program resources.

• Collaborates with district leadership and school administrators for review of and input on program quality,

consistency, and alignment.

• Supports the Lead Coaches and instructional coaches.

• Serves as the liaison between instructional coaches, the school district, and NTC.

3 Lead Coaches

• Positions fully funded by grant

• Collaborate with instructional coaches at the selected schools to set goals and

assess progress towards goals.

• Conduct visits to help collect data on the coach’s practice with teachers.

• Ensure quality program implementation.

• Support instructional coaches in their professional growth.

• Provide assistance to instructional coaches at approximately 10 schools each.

Instructional Coaches

Instructional Coaches at the selected schools will:

• Receive approximately 100 hours of professional learning each school year

• Four 2-day professional development sessions focused on effective coaching structures

• Face-to-face coach forums two times a month

• Set goals with mid-year review and end-of-year reflections

• Receive peer coaching from Lead Coaches

• Utilize NTC’s online program to analyze, assess, and document their work with teachers.

Coaching Support

PLCs

STEM Teachers

• Science and Math Teachers at the selected schools may be able to

receive 4 hours of online professional learning through NTC’s

Explorations modules.

• This is optional and teachers may be able to receive compensation

for their time.

Our Collaboration with NTC

• Our collaboration with the New Teacher Center on the SEED Grant has

provided us the opportunity to better align our district initiatives, increase

inter-departmental communications, design more comprehensive systems—

all to positively impact teachers and students.
