Supporting
Calgary families
at the end of life
and during times
of grief
for 31 years.
2010/2011 Annual Report
2
From the Chair and
Executive Director
Hospice Calgary – Care. Hope. Compassion.
At Hospice Calgary, we believe in helping people live life to its fullest. As you
read through the Annual Report, you’ll see that these words have been put into
action, day after day, by our dedicated staff and volunteers.
Clients—your neighbours, colleagues, perhaps family memberstell us that
they are profoundly impacted by the compassion found at Hospice Calgary. At a
time when people feel overwhelmed, they come to us for support. By giving voice
to the reality of facing death, people tell us they are better able to
embrace life. This year’s Annual Report includes two very personal stories from
past clients who share their voice with you.
Hospice Calgary works hard to create an environment where genuine caring,
hope and compassion can thrive. Whether meeting with a teen whose mother
died in a car accident, counselling in the home with a child whose father has
cancer, or providing 24-hour care to a grandmother at Rosedale Hospice, our
staff are honoured to provide guidance and support.
As we reflect back on the past year and plan for the months ahead, we want to
thank and acknowledge the people who have been the heart and soul of
Hospice Calgary. Thank you to the staff and volunteers for all their hard work; to
the Board for their vision and support; to our donors and funders—who make it all
possible. Most importantly, we want to acknowledge and thank the people who
have turned to Hospice Calgary during difficult times and shared their
experience with us. Thank you all.

Derek Hull passed away at Rosedale
Hospice on November 12, 2009.
At Hospice Calgary, we are
here for the whole journey;
providing a continuum of
care that begins during a
palliative diagnosis and
extends beyond bereave-
ment, as long as a family
needs us.
The Living with Cancer
Program supported 51
persons with a palliative
cancer diagnosis and 100
family members during
2010/2011.
Rosedale Hospice, our 7-bed
residence for end-of-life
cancer patients cared for 70
patients and supported 420
family members.
Living with Cancer Program
and Rosedale Hospice
Former client, Gina Hull writes
about her Hospice Calgary experience
Dear Hospice Calgary,
I cannot thank you enough for the Living with Cancer Program. Derek so loved
attending each week. He loved the music, the stories, the laughter and the cama-
raderie. He was so fond of the other participants—the ones he had known for
years and the newcomers. I am so grateful for the kindness, compassion and
friendship we received from Elaine, Marj, all the volunteers, the participants, as
well as the office staff.
Derek and I so enjoyed the annual retreat. We were always aware of the great
effort, manpower and donations needed to arrange the weekend. I was heart-
broken when he could not muster enough energy to attend the last trip, not only
because he would be missing a trip which gave him so much joy, but also as I
came to the realization that the end was nearing. He was admitted to Rosedale a
few weeks later.
At Rosedale Hospice, I cannot stress enough the compassion of the doctors, the
wonderful nursing staff, the chaplain, and the gardeners—each person gave so
much of themselves, and then gave more. Derek had so many visits from the
Hospice Calgary staff, volunteers and ex-volunteers during his time at Rosedale.
He loved those visits—this was so evident in his eyes even towards the end when
he could no longer speak. What a gift you all gave to him.
How can I ever thank you for the cheerful kindness and friendship to Derek and
me over the past year? Your compassion shown to Derek in his final months, as
well as your assistance and guidance to our family was invaluable. I commend
you all for your remarkable dedication. Some people make an indelible mark on
one’s life; you have all certainly made your mark on our lives.
Once again, please accept my sincere gratitude for your loving kindness to
Derek and our family, and for the continued support to me even now.
Sincerely,
Gina Hull

I write to thank Hospice Calgary for all the help and support me and my
family have received. I lost my husband to cancer a few years ago. I thought
we were doing okay but became frustrated as I watched my oldest son’s
grades fall and his health decline.
After many tests and months of fear and uncertainty, a kind doctor
recommended grief counselling. He felt that my son’s health problems
stemmed from not going through a proper grief process and getting help when
his father was dying.
One of the staff from the hospital assessed our financial situation and
looked for a program that could help our family. Hospice Calgary put us on a
sliding scale payment. If it wasn’t for the funding they receive from outside
sources we would never have received the help we so desperately needed.
I have since learned each individual grieves differently. We are learning to
look at the pictures and memories of the past and not literally feel
nauseous to our stomachs with sadness. We are learning to look back and see
happy memories. We are still a work in progress.
I am grateful for the help each of my children has received. We are learning
how to continue our lives with hope for the future instead of sadness for what
we have lost.
I regret not seeking help earlier and wish my boys to have a future their
father would have been proud of. Hospice Calgary has created a support that
has made me feel that I am no longer alone with the daunting task of
parenting three children alone.
Thank you for giving me peace, friendship and hope for the future.
Letter from a young mother

On the road again could well be the song that
sums up what my days look like as a Community
Hospice Family Counsellor. My job involves
counselling children in relationships with someone
close to them who lives with a palliative diagnosis.
I usually start with school visits and often finish
with a home visit. Some days I may meet with a
family at a hospital or in a hospice setting. I meet
families where it best suits them.
I usually meet Julianne* at school but this week
she is at home because her mom is dying at a
hospice. When I initially meet with families, my
hope is that time is on our side. Time allows us to
work on building strategies to face the illness and
other stresses in their lives. It also enables the
building of an invaluable, trusting relationship
between myself and the family.
Flexibility and responsiveness are the keys to my work. After a couple of initial family home visits, I may see
a child at school weekly for a few weeks and then we may space out these visits to every two or three weeks
if things are stable at home and there are no other issues and everybody agrees that this is the best plan.
Families also know that I will increase my support again if things
change and their needs are greater. I have seen families twice or even
three times in a week around the time of a death.
My next appointment is out of the city to catch up with Tessa* whose
grandfather died a few weeks ago. We discussed how she is doing
regarding her grandpa and the strategies that work for her right now.
I return to the city for another school visit. Ella* and I have been meet-
ing at school weekly for the past six weeks. Ella’s father died two
months ago and she has struggled before and after his death. Today,
Ella and I looked at the big and little issues that affect her and what
has changed for her since I saw her last.
After my last appointment, I drive with the windows down to boost my
energy before picking up my two lovely boys from daycare. I reflect on
my day and feel good knowing that my job allows me to support my
clients when and where they need me most.
The Community Hospice
Team is specially trained to
provide support and counsel-
ling to families coping with
issues related to a serious
illness or death.
Counsellors meet with adults,
children and families at home,
school, hospital or at Hospice
Calgary’s Counselling and
Education Centre.
In this reporting cycle, the
Community Hospice team
cared for 353 children, teens
and adults.

Board of Directors
Hospice Calgary Committees: Meetings with a Purpose!
What do end-of-life research, financial dashboards and security systems all have in common? They are all topics of discussion at the eight different Hospice Calgary Board Committees. Board members, community volunteers and staff combine their expertise and resources to align to Hospice Calgary’s Strategic Plan. Thank you to all of our volunteer committee members for the many hours of time, genuine caring and support—we couldn’t do it without you!
