JANINE BAJUS FAIR ISLE COLOR: HOW DO THEY DO THAT? SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK Your class fee included the cost of the many colors of yarn you will be using in class. You will need to bring to class:

1. Size 3 circular needle size 24” to 32” for swatching. (if you are a loose knitter go down to a size 2 or size1 needle or a tight knitter go up to a size 4 needle)

2. A Sharpened Pencil 3. If you have a “3-in-1 Color Tool” (expanded color wheel), bring it along. Janine will

have some available for use in class too. 4. Find 2 or 3 sources of inspiration you like for their colors (preferably not on your

computer/mobile device).

YOUR VERY OWN FAIR ISLE TAM SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK Janine will email you in January so you will be able to pick from the 7 colorways for your Tam kit. The kit contains enough yarn to knit 3 or 4 tams and handout. 1. Size 3 circular needles 24” – 32” in length for swatching. If you are a loose knitter bring

size 2 or size1 needles. If you are a tight knitter go up to a size 4 needle. 2. Sharpened pencil

ANNE BERK FUN WITH FINISHING SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – HOMEWORK BELOW 1. Bring Homework knit with smooth, worsted weight yarn. You will need size 5 and size 8

needles. 2. Bring the same needles you used for your homework along with a slightly smaller sized

needles to use to work the bands. 3. Locking markers or pins 4. Yarn needle and scissors

HOMEWORK – THIS WILL NOT TAKE YOU AS LONG AS IT LOOKS! Use a smooth worsted weight yarn and size needles according to the following directions.

Back: With size 5 needles, cast on 40 stitches. Work k1, p1 rib for 5 rows (1/2”) Switch to size 8 needles and knit in stockinette stitch for 3 1/2” for a total of 4” from the bottom edge. Row 1: (RS) knit 11 sts and place the remaining stitches on a holder to be worked later. Row 2: (WS) purl to end Row 3: Knit Row 4: Purl Row 5: Knit

Row 6: Purl Row 7: Bind off all the stitches, for the right shoulder. Leave the center 18 stitches on the holder and put the remaining 11 stitches on the size 8 needles to work the left shoulder. Row 1: Rejoin yarn at the neck and knit all 11 stitches Row 2: (WS) purl to end Row 3: Knit Row 4: Purl Row 5: Knit Row 6: Purl Row 7: Leave the stitches on a holder for the left shoulder

Front: Make 2 - reversing shaping for left and right as for back With size 5 needles, cast on 18 stitches. Work k1, p1 rib for 5 rows (1/2”) Switch to size 8 needles and knit in stockinette stitch for 3 1/2” for a total of 4” from the bottom edge.

Left Front: Knit 11 stitches and place the remaining 7 stitches on a holder to be worked later. Cut working yarn.

Right Front: Cut working yarn. Place the 7 stitches on a holder. Attach a new yarn and knit the remaining 11 stitches for the shoulder.

Work rows 2-7 as for the back, binding off all stitches for the right shoulder and leaving the 7 stitches on a holder for the left shoulder.

Left Sleeve With size 5 needles, cast on 24 stitches. Work k1, p1 rib for 5 rows. Switch to size 8 needles and knit one row. Row 1: Purl Row 2: Knit Row 3: Purl Row 4: Knit Row 5: Purl Row 6: Knit Row 7: Purl Bind off all stitches.

ENTRELAC BASICS SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK 1. Yarn: Balls of a smooth, light-colored, worsted-weight yarn in two or more colors. 2. Needles of a size appropriate for your yarn.

SLICK SET-IN SLEEVES SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – HOMEWORK BELOW 1. Yarn: smooth light-colored, worsted-weight yarn (400 yards, if you want to complete the

class sample sweater) 2. Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles or size needed to obtain a gauge of 20 stitches = 4”.

If you wish to knit the lower sleeves in the round, include a set of dpn’s, two circs or a long Magic Loop circ. Otherwise straight needles are fine.

HOMEWORK Knit the back and right front of a child-size cardigan from the top down as follows:

Back: Cast on 50 sts firmly. Keeping selvedge sts in stockinette (do not slip the first st of every row). Work even in stockinette for 4.25 inches (11 cm) Then increase 2 sts every RS row 4 times as follows: (k1, M1, knit to last st, M1, k1 = 58 sts. After the last increase row, purl one WS row, then break the yarn and transfer all sts from needles to waste yarn.

Right Front: Holding the back with its RS facing you, pick up and knit 13 sts from the back’s cast-on edge, starting at the right armhole edge and extending for 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) across the right shoulder. Work even in stockinette for 5 rows. Then increase 1 st at the neck edge every RS row 6 times as follows: (knit to the last stitch, M1, k1, =19 sts ) After the last increase row, purl one WS row Then cast on 6 more sts at the end of the following RS row = 25 sts. Work even in stockinette until the right front measures 4.25” (11 cm) from its initial pick-up row.

AMELIA GARRIPOLI BLENDING BOARD TECHNIQUES SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK Amelia will provide all the fiber to use in class. 1. If you have a blending board, bring it and all its accessories OR 2. If you don’t have a blending board and you have handcards and a flicker or stiff scrub

brush bring any or all to class. A straight knitting needles longer than the handcard is wide will be helpful.

3. Amelia will have a few boards to use in class and some handcards for students with no tools to try.

4. Bring a spinning wheel, e-spinner or spindle to sample your rolags.

CARD, COMB, AND FLICK SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK Amelia will provide all the fiber to use in class. 1. If you have a flicker, handcards or combs, bring them to class. Otherwise a clean plastic

toothed hairbrush and plastic comb. 2. Bring your favorite spinning tool (wheel, e-spinner or spindle and the usual accessories)

so you can sample spin as you flick, card, and comb. 3. Amelia will have a few pairs of handcards, flickers and combs for students to work with. 4. Please wear jeans or bring a heavy protective fabric for your leg.

POWER SPINNING SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK 1. E-spinner in good working condition, 3 empty bobbins, and a lazy kate. 2. An extension cord may be handy as well, or a charged portable battery if you have one for

your spinner. 3. Amelia will provide fiber to use in class. And you are welcome to bring any fiber or yarn

you want to ask questions about.

HILARY GRANT WET FELTING A COBWEB SCARF SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK Hilary is providing the fiber and all the supplies needed for felting your Cobweb Scarf. You need to bring the following: 1. Two old bath towels 2. Several large plastic bags to take your finished scarf home 3. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. You may wish to wear an apron (maybe

waterproof) and maybe bring plastic gloves (like dishwashing gloves or exam gloves) especially if your hands are sensitive.

FRANKLIN HABIT CARVED IN WOOL: AN INTRODUCTION TO BAVARIAN TWISTED STITCH SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK 1. One ball of smooth (non-fuzzy) firmly-spun yarn in sport or worsted weight (for example:

Hikoo Simpliworsted, Cascade 220, Dale Baby Ull, Universal Yarns Deluxe Worsted) in white or a light color.

2. One 16” circular needle in a size that will give you a firm gauge with the yarn you select. Please note that needles with sharp tips, whether wood or metal, will be extremely helpful.

3. Notebook and pen or pencil for notes 4. Usual knitting notions including scissors, tapestry needle and a selection of stitch

markers.

EMBROIDER YOUR KNITTING – LEVEL ONE SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – HOMEWORK BELOW 1. Bring completed homework assignment (see below for instructions) 2. Bring at least 2 balls (partial balls are fine) of smooth, strong, worsted or sport weight

yarn in solid or semi-solid colors that contrast strongly with the yarn used to complete the homework assignment. Suggested yarns are Cascade 220, Cascade 220 Sport, Universal Yarns Deluxe Worsted, Valley Yarns Northampton.

HOMEWORK Use a smooth, strong, worsted or sport weight yarn (i.e., Cascade 220, Cascade 220 Sport, Universal Yarns Deluxe Worsted, Valley Yarns Northampton) in a white or a light solid or semi-solid color. Make two swatches the same as follows.

1. With needles that will give you a gauge of about 5 (with worsted) to 6 (with sport) sts to the inch in stockinette st, Cast On 56 sts.

2. Rows 1-6: Knit 3. Row 7 (WS): k4, p48, k4 4. Repeat rows 6-7 for 25 times 5. Rows 58-63: Knit 6. Bind off. 7. Block

Students who might like to begin a hat should bring the needles and yarn listed. ALL students should bring the notions listed. 1. Cascade 220, Hikoo Simpliworsted, Universal Yarns Deluxe Worsted, or similar). 2. Needles: 1 circular needle about 16” in length in a size appropriate to give a firm (but not

tight) gauge in the yarn selected. (Students who dislike working in the round on circulars may elect to use equivalent double-pointed needles.)

3. Notions: Flexible tape measure, stitch markers, scissors, notebook or blank paper, pencils (not pens) and erasers for sketching and charting.

ARTFULLY AGITATED STRIPES: AN INTRODUCTION TO MOSAIC KNITTING SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK 1. Yarns: Two balls of smooth (non-fuzzy), worsted-weight yarn (for example: Cascade 220,

Universal Yarns Deluxe Worsted, or similar) in highly contrasting solid colorways. 2. Needles: 1 circular needle (preferably 16-24 inches) in a size appropriate to give a

comfortable, firm gauge (such as would be appropriate for a warm scarf or hat) in the yarns selected.

3. Notions: Notebook and pencils (not pens) and erasers for sketching and charting. Two or more 8.5 X 11 sheets of graph paper ruled in squares at 4 squares/inch. This paper is easily procured from shops or can be printed, free, at http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/square.html.

gauge (such as would be appropriate for a warm scarf or hat) in the yarns selected. 3. Notions: Notebook, pencils (not pens) and erasers for sketching and charting.

GARTER PARTY: GARTER STITCH GONE WILD SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – HOMEWORK BELOW 1. Yarns: Two balls of smooth, worsted-weight yarn (for example: Hikoo Simpliworsted,

Cascade 220, Universal Yarns Deluxe Worsted, or similar) in highly contrasting solid or semi-solid colorways. Wool, alpaca or blends thereof are recommended. Students unable to handle wool should choose a non-slippery yarn.

2. Needles: For knitting: 1 circular needle about 24 inches in length; or one pair of straight needles, in a size appropriate to give a firm (but not tight) gauge in the yarn selected. (If in doubt, select needles one size smaller than those you would normally use for knitting the yarn you have selected.) For the afterthought opening: three double-pointed needles of a size equal to or slightly smaller than the needles selected for knitting.

3. Notions: Stitch markers, scissors, notebook, pencils (not pens) and erasers for sketching and charting.

HOMEWORK With yarn and needles to give a firm (not tight) gauge, CO 20 sts. Knit 40 rows, slipping first st of every row as if to purl with the yarn in front.

SUSANNA HANSSON LAPLAND HAND GARMENTS – MITTENS FROM ROVANIEMI SUPPLIES FOR IN-CLASS PRACTICE AND HOMEWORK – HOMEWORK BELOW 1. Smooth light colored worsted weight wool. Please bring two small balls (25-30 yards each)

of your practice yarn. 2. Small balls (10 -15 yards) of the same practice worsted weight wool in 3-5 colors. 3. Double pointed needles in a size to give you a gauge of approximately 20 stitches to 10 cm

(4 inches) with your practice yarn. 4. A crochet hook the same size as your needles 5. One L-O-N-G straight single pointed needle (the longer, the better). Size is not critical –

between 2.0 and 3.25 mm (US 0-3). You will need a point protector to fit on the end.

HOMEWORK With one of your light colored balls for in-class practice, and the double-pointed needles that will provide the gauge listed, cast on 52 stitches. Join and work in 2 X 2 ribbing for 7 rounds. Round 8: Needle 1: work 14 stitches in 2 X 2 ribbing Needle 2: Knit 13 stitches, increase 1 stitch, knit another 13 stitches for a total of 27 stitches in stockinette. Needle 3: work 12 stitches in 2 X 2 ribbing

Keep the knitting on the needles and make sure you have enough yarn to continue working another 20 rounds or so. Bring this work to class.

SUPPLIES FOR WORKSHOP PROJECT – WRISTLETS 1. You will receive your yarn kit and pattern for the wristlets in class. You will need to bring

needles as follows. 2. You will need double pointed needles in several smaller sizes depending on whether you

are a loose or tight knitter. Pick several sets from the smaller needle range of the following needle sizes if you are a loose knitter or the larger range if you are a tight knitter. Needles: 1.25 mm/US 0000; 1.5 mm/US 000; 1.75 mm/US 00; 2.0 mm/US 0; 2.23 mm/US 1; 2.50 US/1.5; and 2.75 mm US/2.

3. The Susan Bates company makes an inexpensive set of 5 double pointed needles sold all together in these four sizes (US 000, 00, 0, and 1). If you google “Susan Bates Silvalume Double Point Sock Set”, you should be able to find them. When I checked, they were available from www.joann.com, www.kmart.com, and WEBS (www.yarn.com)

4. Optional: a magnetic pattern holder and a magnifying line market or highlighter tape will be helpful as well as a battery-powered light source.

SIVIA HARDING ADDING THE PERFECT BEADS TO ENHANCE YOUR KNITTED PROJECT SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK You have already paid for hand dyed yarns and beads to be supplied by Sivia. You will also receive Sivia’s latest shawl pattern. 1. Size 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle – 24” long 2. Steel crochet hook size 14 (0.75 mm) 3. Dental floss threaders (found in grocery stores and drug stores) 4. Yarn needle 5. At least 10 plastic baggies (sandwich or quart size) to hold individual beaded samples 6. Permanent marker

ILISHA HELFMAN MAGICAL TURKISH SPINDLES SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK Ilisha is providing hand dyed fibers. 1. Bring your Turkish spindle to class. There are spindles available in the Madrona Market

at Northwest Yarns. 2. You need to be able to spin a consistent single on your Turkish spindle prior to class. Ilisha

will be demonstrating in the Rotunda on Saturday morning prior to class and is available to help you get started. See the “Demonstration Schedule” in your registration envelope.

JAZZKNITTING: FOLLOW THE COLORS SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – NO HOMEWORK 1. Bring a small stash of hand-dyed yarns, preferably 100% merino, with color repeats and,

if possible, color transitions that bleed into each other. Ilisha uses lace and sock weight yarns which work best for color pooling but some students may find a DK weight easier to start with.

2. Needles: Bring a small range of double-pointed or circular needles to experiment with. For lace and sock weight yarns, size 0 and 1 bamboo needles work well. Size 2 can also work for some of the knitting that students may choose to explore with these finer weight yarns.

DANIEL HERRERA A SURVEY OF MODERN KNITTING TECHNIQUES SUPPLIES NEEDED AND TO BRING TO CLASS – HOMEWORK BELOW 1. Two balls of yarn in contrasting colors 2. Two sets of knitting needles – both the same size and appropriate size to your yarn. One

set should be long straight needles in wood or bamboo and the other set metal circulars. 3. Paper and writing utensils

If you prefer, you can work one big swatch in the round, to be cut in 3 places during class. Use needles appropriate to your chosen yarn.

2. Knitting in stockinette, alternate knitting your two colors with every stitch, stranding loosely across the back of the work. On the WS float one color on top and one color on bottom consistently. The cast-on and bind-off rows of each swatch can be worked in one color.

3. Block your swatches using your preferred method. 4. We will be securing the strands in each swatch using one of three different techniques,

HOMEWORK – there are a total of 11 swatches Knit the following swatches using a worsted weight smooth plied yarn in a light color. Use double pointed needles of appropriate size. Leave stitches on a needle or place on a holder. Be sure to mark each of your swatches for its intended use. Might be good to put them in separate marked baggies. You will be making a total of 11 swatches – for some swatches you will make 2 of the same swatch.

Please note: Use long tail cast on for all of the following swatches.

Swatch number 1: Cast on for 1 by 1 ribbing Knit 2 identical swatches as follows:

Swatch number 7: Used for shoulder slope Cast on for Short Row Knit 2 identical swatches as follows:

§ 30 stitches across in stockinette stitch § continue for 5 cm in height.

Swatch number 8: Use for joining yarn in mid-row Knit 30 stockinette stitches across and 10 rows. On the 11th row knit 15 stitches across. Drop yarn you are using and leave a 5 inch tail. Pick up yarn of a contrasting color (same weight) leaving a 5 inch tail (do not join or knot the two yarn ends together) and continue knitting for another 10 rows.
