* The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project’s Clinical Classifications Software1 was used to categorize surgical subtype when appropriate. When the Clinical Classifications Software category contained procedures performed by different surgical specialties or procedures likely to have significantly different rate of intraoperative cardiac arrest, individual ICD-10-PCS codes were used to assign surgical subtypes. For example, heart and lung transplantation was separated from other transplantation procedures using individual ICD-10-PCS codes.
