BROWN & MASON Kingsnorth Power Station

The demolition work carried out at Kingsnorth Power Station for client E.ON sees Brown and Mason gain a place on the shortlist for this category. Work on the project began in March 2014, with completion scheduled for June 2017. The site covers a total of more than 1 million m2 (10.7 million ft2) and the work involved in the deconstruction and demolition is believed to be the single largest such demolition in Europe, which also involves the largest single asbestos removal contract where a total of 4,000 tonnes of asbestos containing material is to be safely handled and processed.

With a workforce of 150 at peak, this major project requires extremely careful sequencing and the scaling up of management systems to precisely allocate resources and ensure safety and efficiency. To date, the company has demolished a turbine hall, six 60 m (197 ft) diameter by 20 m (66 ft) high oil storage tanks and a coal conveyor system, including five junction towers, and has prepared deaerator bays, boilers and precipitators for demolition. The largest structures on the site were the

Queensbridge House is located in the Mansion House area of the City of London. The project consists of three buildings that occupy locations to the north, south and directly over Upper Thames Street. The scope includes soft strip, asbestos removal, temporary works installation and demolition of all three buildings. As a key arterial route through London, Upper Thames Street is

These included the need for approvals from the Environment Agency and Port of London Authority associated with working adjacent to the Thames River waterway, Transport for London and City of London approval associated with the demolition of the Queensbridge House bridged structure over a live major traffic thoroughfare and an unprecedented number of scheduled monuments (four in total) on one project requiring statutory English Heritage consent to carry out works anywhere in the vicinity.

A significant constraint involved structural demolition of the bridged section of Queensbridge House structure over the live Upper Thames Street East-West highway.

To facilitate this, Cantillon designed and installed an independent steel protection crash deck and scaffold support over the thoroughfare that required detailed coordination with various stakeholders including Transport for London, the City of London and the recent politically sensitive construction of the Super Cycle Highway network due to pass beneath.

The concept was to create a safe condition in order to undertake the demolition without adversely affecting the network through numerous road closures, which were kept to a minimum and were planned to avoid the 2015 London marathon.

In addition, vehicle access to the north site was restricted to 7.5 tonne MGW on the one way Little Trinity Lane, so traditional HGV access was not possible. As a result Cantillon developed a strategy with the City of London to reverse the traffic flow under a Temporary Traffic Order on Little Trinity Lane and to date have managed the process successfully. ■

CERES Police headquarters, Christchurch

Ceres has been shortlisted for the demolition of the former police headquarters building in Christchurch that had suffered extensive damage during the earthquakes that occurred in 2010 and 201. There were a number of major challenges in preparing the building for demolition and also convincing and obtaining approvals from neighbouring property owners. Within a 100 m (328 ft) radius of the building there were two new construction projects underway, a new office block just opened, a heritage war memorial bridge undergoing repairs due to earthquake damage, two heritage buildings with extensive earthquake damage and limited seismic strengthening, the Christchurch City Council is directly across the road from the building and there are a number of residential properties.

A lot of neighbourhood consultation had to take place to explain the method of demolition and its merits compared to other methods of demolition. This in itself was a

difficult task as the residents of Christchurch have been through two major earthquakes and non-stop demolition and construction work, and the thought of an implosion is unnerving. Ceres New Zealand met with all neighbouring building stakeholders, residents and property owners to explain the thought process and the scientific data regarding explosive demolitions.

Another major challenge was the asbestos removal that took nine months to complete. Although two intrusive asbestos surveys were carried out prior to strip out works, once the work began further asbestos was discovered. All asbestos work was carried out according to NZ regulations. Two independent occupational hygienists were engaged to provide clearances for the asbestos removal work. On the day of implosion, further air monitoring was carried out to provide sufficient level of comfort to neighbouring property owners and general public.

Due to the proximity of the Christchurch City Council the blast design had to ensure that the building fell to the south away from the CCC building. The blast design was prepared with this in mind and the building fell to the south causing no damage to the CCC building. ■

Coleman and Company were commissioned by Network Rail and Mace to carry out the demolition package at the £750 million Birmingham New Street Development Project in the, UK. This included forming an atrium void underneath a newly installed ETFE roof structure ensuring the train station and surrounding shops remained operational throughout the works. The removal of 6,000 tonnes of heavily reinforced concrete was carried out over two levels of the structure utilising various items of plant and differing demolition techniques. BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology and animated sequences were used in the planning process to identify any shortfalls in productivity and highlight any sequence clashes with regards to safety exclusion zones.

During the demolition a number of motorised dust suppression units were used to manage the migration of dust. It was decided that vibration sensors would be installed before any demolition commenced.

To minimise the risk of noise and disturbance to the general public, real-time sound monitoring was undertaken in both the demolition exclusion zone and public areas of the station.

The project demanded a lightweight, remote controlled, environmentally friendly excavator that was developed jointly by Coleman and JCB. An infra-red laser fence system was installed to prevent the excavator encroaching on leading edges. High grade timber hardwood mats formed a protective layer over the weak concrete slabs allowing the excavator to move freely. All practices were carried out to Network Rail safety critical standards rigidly adhered to throughout demolition.

As part of the atrium demolition, the existing concrete slab had to be part removed with the remainder suspended from temporary works. This involved the transferring of a load from a temporary to a permanent condition. Temporary works were installed to transfer the load from existing structure into the new permanent structure. ■

ERITH GROUP Fleet and Plum Tree Court, London

In early December 2013, Erith was awarded the contract to demolish the Fleet and Plum Tree Court buildings in London’s Farringdon Road as part of a £10 million redevelopment scheme to create a high-profile commercial office block. Employed as principal contractor, Erith’s scope of works included the strip-out, asbestos removal and structural demolition of both blocks to top of basement slab level.

Plum Tree Court building was built around a central courtyard. The ‘U-shaped’ structure was of reinforced concrete construction and consisted of a single level basement and raft foundation that encapsulated three UK Power Networks sub-stations. The Fleet Building, meanwhile, was built in the 1950s. This reinforced concrete-framed building consisted of seven storeys and a two storey basement.

J BRYAN VICTORIA LTD Ferrybridge ‘C’ Power StationJ Bryan Victoria has been shortlisted in this category for the work it carried out at the fire-damaged FGD4 absorption unit at the Ferrybridge ‘C’ Power Station in west Yorkshire, UK. The structure had buckled under its own weight due to the heat of the fire and subsided non-symmetrically through the tower by approximately 1.8 m (6 ft). This had twisted, bent and broken a number of the pipes, ducts and access walkways leading to the structure. Much of the external cladding had been dislodged and was being blown

The demolition scheme, known as the London Development Project, occupied a 10,370 m2 (112,000 ft2) footprint and comprised the design and erection of perimeter hoarding and scaffolding; a series of structural and intrusive surveys; decommissioning of mechanical and electrical equipment; service disconnections and isolations; protection of sub-stations and BT shafts and chambers; asbestos removal; strip-out of all non-structural elements; retaining wall soldier and raking shore design and installation; and basement demolition and dewatering. ■

With a live power station active beside and below and with 30,000 kVA overhead pylons a few metres away, the team first had to understand the collapse, make the structure safe and engineer a dismantling sequence. The solution, devised in conjunction with partners Mammoet and consulting engineers WYG involved the erection of an external ‘exoskeleton’ to support the 300 tonne structure and provide a safe working environment for the team as the structure was deconstructed. Before this could be installed, however, J Bryan had to carry out extensive site investigations, civil engineering and enabling works.

J Bryan personnel clocked up 70,000 hours on the project and achieved a 99% recycling rate for the metals removed as the tower was dismantled. ■

Contract of the Year under US$1 million

LIBERTY INDUSTRIAL Hammerhead Crane, SydneyLiberty Industrial recently completed the deconstruction of the historic Hammerhead Crane located at the Garden Island Naval Base on Sydney Harbour. The project involved dismantling a heritage-significant giant cantilevered dockside crane for the Department of Defence.

At tender stage, Liberty Industrial engineered, and successfully pitched, an efficient alternative design solution to the Department of Defence, redesigning the supplied dismantling methodology and proposing an alternative methodology with full engineering at bid stage to secure the contract. Liberty Industrial’s proposed alternative design reduced Defence’s proposed dismantling methodology from 250 lifts down to just 70.

Two tower cranes were used to carry out the lifts and Liberty carried out spray painting and paint stripping works to prepare the crane for disassembly, encapsulating the existing lead chromate paint coating with a high build flexible water-borne acrylic paint to stabilise any flaky paint on the structure to prevent the release of lead chromate paint during deconstruction. The predetermined separation locations were carefully marked and the paint removed from these areas to prepare the surface for oxy cutting. This prevented the release of harmful vapours during cutting.

A stringent environmental monitoring

COLEMAN & COMPANY Molson Coors Brewery

Coleman & Company were awarded the contract to demolish the North Boiler House of Molson Coors Brewery in Burton upon Trent. Molson Coor’s de-risk programme called for the removal of the asbestos and hazardous waste contained upon the site.

The works comprised asbestos and hazardous waste removal, soft strip, removal of acid and oil storage tanks, removal of redundant pipework, demolition of a redundant pipe-bridge, protection of live

Erith was employed by National Grid Property Holdings Ltd to undertake the demolition, dismantling and other associated

enabling works of a redundant gasholder within the parameters of a National Grid Gas compound. Further works incorporated intricate dewatering and desludging requirements as well as the demolition of three ancillary structures.

The overall site occupied an area of approximately 0.75 hectares, divided between NGPH and NGG compounds respectively. The site also was home to a live pressure reduction system and an electricity sub-station, both of which were located in the south west corner of site – proving to be sensitive assets that would remain in-situ. This brownfield site was surrounded by operational stakeholders including both commercial and light industrial premises.

The works itself consisted of a number of activities, utilising Erith’s range of in-house services – the focal point being the demolition and dismantling of an existing below ground column guided gasholder. Demolition was inclusive of a below ground metal tank structure, all associated above ground pipework, siphon pits, anti-flood seals, valves and other related steel work.

Other related works included service clearance, condition survey, site establishment and the demolition and dismantling of three ancillary buildings. ■

This included surveys for lead in soil and sediment, surveys for lead in water and a comprehensive ambient air monitoring program.

in large sections in a highly choreographed sequence, engineered to maintain the structural stability of the crane. In total, 2027 tonnes of the 2036 tonnes, or 99.56% of all materials were recovered. This included the salvage of 132 tonnes of heritage items and the recycling of 1,855 tonnes of steel and 40 tonnes of concrete. Only 9 tonnes of material was not recoverable; 6 tonnes of lead paint waste and 3 tonnes of general waste. ■

Explosive Demolition Award

COLEMAN & COMPANYDidcot A cooling towersColeman has been shortlisted for the manner in which it successfully delivered the implosion of the first three cooling towers at Didcot A power station operated by electricity generator RWE. To successfully carry out the project, Coleman was faced with a number of almost unique challenges – a nervous client, a tight deadline, an expectant public, attempts to turn the blowdown into an event, the interventions of the local member of parliament to influence the timing of the actual implosion, intrusion of national and international press, the need to maintain a firm position over the planning of the implosion and finally, rebuffing attempts from others to jump on the event bandwagon.

RWE, the client, had no experience of demolition and being a risk adverse organisation, required considerable efforts to be made to reassure it that the implosion would be carried efficiently and safely. The property developer who had acquired the site obviously was also eager to commence work, creating the need to carry out the implosion and the clearance of the resulting debris from the site as quickly as possible. To achieve this, by working over weekends and late into the evenings and overcoming the challenges above, after 22 weeks, 7,000 holes drilled and 30,000 tonnes of concrete processed and crushed, Coleman finally handed the site over to a happy investor. ■

FABIO BRUNO CONSTRUÇÕES LTDAAB InBev factory, Rio de JaneiroOn July 19, 2015, Fabio Bruno successfully performed the implosion of 19 silos and a concrete building at the AB InBev factory in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Of the 19 silos, all 44 m (145 ft) tall, 10 had a diameter of 10 m (33 ft) and supporting columns 5.8 m (19 ft) tall, with the nine smaller silos having a diameter of 3.3 m (11 ft) with 4.2 m (14 ft) supporting columns. In addition to the silos, a 42 m (138 ft) tall concrete building with access to the

LIBERTY INDUSTRIALOmega Transmission Tower, VictoriaStanding 432 metres (1,418 ft) high, the Omega Transmission Tower in Darriman, Victoria was the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere until its demolition on 22 April 2015. Contracted by the Department of Defence to carry out the demolition, Liberty Industrial used controlled explosive techniques to bring the redundant naval communications tower to the ground.

Tight time frames were imposed by the Department of Defence for the delivery of the project, with Liberty Industrial contractually bound to complete the demolition of the tower within six weeks of the contract award date. The project team, including experienced explosive demolition experts, structural engineers and a licenced shot firer, promptly began planning and engineering a detailed work methodology for the controlled explosive demolition of the structure.

Three of the tower’s main supports, comprising six cables, two at each support base, would be cut at the plate connection using explosive cutting charges, releasing the tower to fall in the direction of the remaining tower base supports, utilising the weight of the tower cables to assist in toppling the structure in a controlled manner.

Liberty Industrial is one of only a handful of contractors licensed to carry out explosive demolition work in Australia. Such works are subject to strict legislative and regulatory compliance. Leading up to the demolition, Liberty Industrial’s project management team worked closely with state and federal government health and safety agencies, Commcare and Worksafe Victoria, to obtain the required explosives approvals in time. Liberty Industrial’s project management team prepared a comprehensive Blast Management Plan, an Explosives Security Plan, a Demolition Work Plan and other documentation critical for safely managing demolition works involving the controlled use of explosives. ■

silos was also to be imploded. As a result, a plan in which the silos fell away from this building also become mandatory.

Demolition engineering studies were commenced in partnership with Applied Science International (ASI) to define the safest and most effective way to implode the silos. After seven demolition scenarios were modelled in 3D and analysed, it was concluded that the pillars in the smaller silos could not be detonated, because the silos would squat and not fall. In the larger silos, only the first two rows of columns could be charged, leaving the last three rows unblasted to ensure the rotation of the silos during the implosion. Finally it was determined that primary responsibility for achieving the required direction of fall of the silos would be through the use of V-cuts made into their structure.

Three seismographs were installed prior to the implosion to verify the generated ground vibration levels. In addition to the seismographs, six dust sensors were also installed to begin a new study in partnership with ASI, to analyse the volume of dust generated in future implosions and how to minimise this effect.

The implosion occurred exactly at 7:00 am on July 19, 2015, and required the closure of two very busy avenues, and several sirens were simultaneously sounded to ensure that residents within a radius of up to 500 m from the detonation would not be alarmed by the noise, since the structures were in a densely populated region. ■
