Conclusion

SUPERNATURAL HORROR

Page 2: Supernatural Horror films: conclusion

I have already looked into 3 supernatural horror movies to understand the codes and conventions of a horror movie so that I may reflect what I have learnt from the films to help my group and I with creating both a convincing and realistic film opening. My group and I will have to look at a number of things to include in the cinematography and planning of our the film opening because it is essential to plan thoroughly if we want to create an effective film opening.

REFLECTION

Page 3: Supernatural Horror films: conclusion

• Incidental music • Moments of silence (these build suspense and tension for

the audience before a direful and formidable event)• Diegetic sounds such as breathing, walking etc. to retain

verisimilitude

WHAT WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT: MUSIC

Page 4: Supernatural Horror films: conclusion

• Costume ( the antagonist, protagonist and stock characters' costume needs to be considered in establishing the period of time the film is taking place e.g. in The Woman in Black the girls are wearing dresses from around the Victorian era)

• Lighting (even though it hasn't been touched on much, films, such as The Ring 2, use blue filters and low key lighting to create an ominous atmosphere)

• Make-up ( in the horror movie clips, the protagonists/stock characters appear to look ordinary whilst for example in The Ring 2, the antagonist has been made to look dirty and inhuman so as to reflect the genre)

WHAT WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT: MISE EN SCENE

Page 5: Supernatural Horror films: conclusion

• Presence of protagonists/antagonists (e.g. in The Devil Inside we don't actually see the antagonist nor are we introduced to the protagonists. As with The Woman in Black, we aren't introduced to the protagonist but we do see at least a part of the antagonist at the end of the clip.)

• Genre-specific-iconography ( e.g. blood was used in The Devil Inside to establish the theme)

• Location ( The Woman in Black is set in a grand, expensive house whilst the clip from The Ring 2 is set in a well within a rural area)

WHAT WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT: MISE EN SCENE

Page 6: Supernatural Horror films: conclusion

• Themes (e.g. what themes will be prevalent-most likely, 'the unknown')

• Typography reflective of the film (e.g. The Devil Inside reflects goodness and evil such as with demons and angels which links to the film where the light represents religion and the black represents the demonic spirits residing as hosts in people's bodies)

• Camera shots/editing (to show importance of characters and stimulate fear in a multitude of ways)
