OBITUARY

John Alden Cox (Johnny) was born March 1, 1951, in Globe, AZ, to Charley Bevis Cox and May LeVern Mowery Cox. He went to his rest Dec. 2, 2015, in a hospice unit in Mesa, AZ, surrounded by family. He was 64. He had been battling cancer for 10 months. John lived in Superior, AZ, since 1975. Feb. 26, 1978, he married Barbara Fraze. They had one son, Preston. John was a very active member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Globe, AZ, serving as First Elder for the past several years. He loved to spend time with his family. He loved to fish, and he loved taking the grandkids fishing. He liked spending time at his vacation place in Lakeside, AZ. John was a vet and spent 4 years in the Air Force. John went to work for the Superior Unified School District in December, 1978. He worked as a custodian, maintenance man, and bus driver. He worked 31.5 years full-time and the last 4.5 years part-time. John is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Preston (Mironda); “daughter,” Patsy (Larry); brothers, Joe

(Carmen), Gene, George (Jackie); sister, Elva Antolick (Paul); grandkids, Larissa, Jessica, Janae, Andrew, Tristan, Faye, Tracy, and Paris; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He will be remembered by the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eyes. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 11, 4 p.m., at the Superior Senior/Junior High School multipurpose room, 100 W. Mary Dr., Superior, AZ.Another memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 12, 3 p.m. at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 2407 E. Ash St., Globe, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations to help with his final expenses can be sent to Barbara Cox, P.O. Box 3551, Apache Junction, AZ, 85117. She was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence. Mathew T. Hall, 23, Apache Junction, was arrested in the

area of Hwy. 60 and Main St. on a warrant for obstruction of justice issued by the Gila County Sheriff’s Office. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail. John A. Moss, 65, Tucson, was arrested at milepost 222 on Hwy. 60 and was charged with resisting arrest, weapon misconduct, aggravated assault and consuming alcohol

while driving. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail.Nov. 28 Criminal damage was reported in the 400 block of Hill St.

The Superior Chamber of Commerce is hosting a third Community Conversation about Superior’s future. The meeting will be at the Chamber of Commerce offices, 165 Main St. in Superior on Monday, Dec. 14, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Attendees are asked to RSVP by Dec. 11 so the Chamber may have an accurate count of attendance. Recently the Chamber embarked on an ambitious effort to understand the business climate and opportunities in the Superior area in order to help the community become more attractive for businesses, more diverse in its

business offerings and more self-reliant as a community. To that end, the Chamber has engaged the services of Local First Arizona to provide facilitation at special community meetings to engage meeting participants directly for ideas and input. Two such meetings took place on Nov. 16 and because they were so helpful, the Chamber has determined that another such meeting is called for. On March 1, 2016, the Chamber will be hosting community meetings again. At that time, consultant teams will report their findings about Superior and participants will have further opportunities for comment

and input. Questions that will be put to attendees on Dec. 14 include:• What do you love about Superior?• What about Superior would you like to keep as the area grows?• What changes would you hope to see in the future? Attendees will discuss increasing capacity for community self-reliance. The Chamber Board is hopeful that community members will plan to attend. The merchants in downtown Superior will be hosting a second Friday event starting in December. The first event is schedule for Friday, Dec. 11, 2015, local merchants, art galleries and dining establishments will be staying open until 8 p.m. The Superior Optimist Club will be hosting a live music jam session in Besich Park. Local musicians from Superior will gather to play. Music will begin at 5 p.m. and run until 8 p.m. This month there is a contest and raffle event going on during the event. The SunFlour Market on Main St. will be the host of the Ugly Christmas Sweater contest

which will start at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to participate, there is no cost to join. Prizes will be gift certificates to spend at several downtown Superior merchants. The chance to win the $300 value gift basket involves visiting every merchant and getting your ticket initialed. Once your ticket is initialed by each merchant you can drop off your entry to win. No purchase necessary, just drop in and see what each merchant has to offer. The merchants are planning to continue this event throughout the year to allow local shoppers and visitors to the area more time to shop and enjoy downtown Superior.

Jean Sebastien (JS) Jacques the Chief Executive of Copper and Coal Group for Rio Tinto along with Craig Stegman who is the Chief Growth and Innovation officer for the global mining company visited the Resolution Copper project last week. Their day included a trip underground to see the progress of construction and underground working conditions, meetings with the Resolution Copper project team, tours of the reclamation of the lower smelter pond clean up and an all hands lunch with the staff, contractors, key project supporters and meetings with community leaders. Jacques gave a brief speech to the to attendees of the all hands lunch. “We are happy to spend $20 million dollars on sinking this shaft,” he said. Jacques also explained that he was pleased to see all the final touches to the number ten shaft and that working conditions are much better than they were when he visited in the Spring of 2015. In the spring he said it was hot, muggy and foggy but now the climate underground is much better. “BHP and Rio Tinto are committed to this project and we want to make sure that the community also wants this project,” he explained. Jacques stated that the sinking of the number nine shaft will resume. “(The) restart of number nine construction is coming,” he said. He commented on the fact that the investment committee at Rio Tinto has committed to funding the project through 2016. The crews from Odonnetto Construction presented JS with a photo of their crew with the Apache Leap in the back ground following the completion of the lower smelter pond reclamation project. Craig Stegman thanked the community for their ongoing support of the project. “The public has never really wavered from this.”

The Superior Optimist Club hosted the 11th Annual Miracle on Main St. holiday light parade and festivities. Downtown filled early with shoppers and visitors attending day time functions including a corn hole tournament. As the day turned into night the lights all turned on and the parade turned onto Main St.

There were a dozen entries in the parade. The first place $100 entry went to the VFW for their Grinch that Stole Christmas entry. Second place went to the Superior Unified School District and third place went to the Lopez Family who recreated the old drive in theater showing “Polar Express” with 2015 Fiesta

Queen Jordan Lopez and all of her brothers, sister and cousins. Santa visited with all the children into the evening and everyone was treated to live music by Calvary Superior worship band and hot chocolate from Mayor Jayme Valenzuela and his family.

As many mines in the region have laid hundreds of people off and reduced their output, the development of the Resolution Copper project is not as affected. “Rio Tinto invests in these projects for the long term,” explained Jacques. Many of their long term mining projects have taken 18 to 20 years to complete construction, permitting and actually begin producing. To balance the company financially the Rio Tinto only invests

in tier one assets which means that the ore bodies are large and can be mined in a low cost method. Stegman and Jacques talked a little about the United States permitting process for mines; sometimes permitting can take five to ten years to complete. The permitting process does not discourage investment in the United States. “The permitting process is well defined and very thorough in the US,” explained Stegman. “We invest in the United States because there are people and infrastructure here, in other projects we have to deliver those needs.”

The Superior Unified School District has begun an employee of the month program for the 2015-16 school year. The employees are selected by nomination from their colleagues on staff. Christine Martinez is the Earth Science and Marketing teacher at Superior Junior-Senior High School. She was nominated based on her work ethic and commitment to being a team player. Superintendent, Steve Estatico read the nomination for her: “Christine is thorough in her classes, she works hard, and she is always willing to take on what Superior Unified School District students need.”

Anna Schcolnick is a paraprofessional with the district. She was recognized for her positive attitude and dedication to her role at the district. The Main Street Alley is glowing with color as the backs of several buildings are being painted with bright bold colors. The project is designed to attract people to Town to see what’s going on. Local painter Jimmy Alvarado is doing the work and it’s being paid for by Dr. Glenn Wilt, who owns a number of buildings throughout the Town.
