SHOPTALK {MARCH/APRIL 2010}

1. Give your clients the best. Help your clients look and feel great by

recommending whatever works to improve their look. As a professional, you know best. Think of ways you can help your clients take their style from ordinary to extraordinary.

Color Will all-over color make that new cut shine? Or will just a few highlights make her eyes sparkle? You know how lowlights and highlights can make limp hair look thicker, so share your secrets. Bring up color to every client as a way to add more pizzazz.

Products Could his style be more sophisticated with a little pomade? Her curls could benefit from a texture cream. Choosing a product from a wall of products can be overwhelming for clients. This is where your expertise can shine. Show your clients the best products for their style and how to use them. Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to recreate that great salon look. Send your clients home with the right products and know-how, and they’ll always be a stylish example of your work.

EVERY CLIENT, EVERY TIMEFrom Gordon Nelson

Spring into Success

Spring is a time for renewal and reenergizing. It’s also a good time to try something new to reenergize your business. Here are three simple suggestions to help breathe new life into your daily routine and, of course, boost your business.

Conditioning Treatment A 15-minute salon conditioning treatment will nourish and moisturize hair to create a smooth, healthy palette for a fresh cut and color, and protect hair color.

Waxing It can be a touchy subject. Ask an open-ended question like, “Have you ever experienced a waxing service?” so as not to offend. Then you can say something like, “Did you know brow shaping is a quick way to open the eyes for a refreshed look?”

2. Keep your clients coming back. Be nice to your current clients and they’ll come back.

It sounds too simple, but that’s the beauty of it, it is that simple. A greeting can be as simple as making eye contact and saying hello with a welcoming smile. Taking an interest in a client’s style and helping them choose products shows you care. And a “Thanks for coming in. I love doing your hair,” goes a long way.

3. Get referrals from your clients. Asking a client to refer you to a friend can feel awkward.

But it doesn’t need to. Your regular clients should be happy to refer people to you. They might not know that you’re looking for new clients because when they’re in your chair, you’re busy. One way to ask for a referral: “I’m thinking about adding a few new clients to my schedule. Do you know anyone looking for a new stylist? Do you mind if I give you a card you can pass along?”

Try these three suggestions in the next two months and see how well they work for you. How did you change them to work better for you? Did you get more clients or sell more retail?

Good luck, Gordon Nelson

Topic: General Ergonomics Training

Goal: To inform all employees about the injuries that can occur because of repetitive motions.

First of all, what is ergonomics? Ergonomics is the design of machines, tools, and work environments to best accommodate human performance and behavior. It aims to improve the practicality, efficiency, and safety of a person working with a single machine or device (e.g., using a telephone, cutting and brushing hair, or operating a blow dryer or curling iron). Taking the user into consideration should always be a part of tool design. Ergonomic tools reduce the stress on your body because less force is required to complete the task. If ergonomic methods are enforced in the salon, the number of hand, wrist, arm, shoulder, neck, and back injuries will be reduced.

Welcome/Introduction

Welcome everyone warmly and with enthusiasm. Encourage the staff to ask questions and offer suggestions throughout the meeting.

Purpose & Agenda (2 minutes)

By understanding how postures of the hand, wrist, arm, and body can increase the stress on nerves, tendons, and muscles an individual can choose how best to reduce their injury risk. This may be done by altering how a specific task is performed, using different tools, introducing stretches periodically throughout the day to reduce the effect of work activities, or by scheduling clients in a way that is less stressful. Repetitive Motion Injuries (RMI) such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and tendonitis of the wrist/forearm account for nearly 50% of all work related injuries. Most of these injuries are avoidable if you know how you are increasing your risk.

View the Ergonomics DVD (17 minutes)

Following the DVD, ask employees for any questions or comments they might have regarding what they saw in the DVD. Please give each employee the Safe Styles Stretching Guide to keep at their workstation. Key Points to Reinforce (6 minutes)

Over the next few days, observe all employees to ensure they are using correct ergonomic positions. Tell employees to observe each other for both improper and proper ergonomic postures. Point out all improper positions and show them the ergonomically correct way of completing the same task.

Remind the stylists that an easy way to decrease your risk of injury is to think about and practice the one foot forward, thumbs-up method. Using this positioning whenever possible allows the supporting muscles of your low back, mid back, shoulders, and neck to give you the best advantage possible. Another factor to consider in reducing stress is how youposition your customers. If you position them so that you’re consistently working with your elbow less than 4-6 inchesaway from your body, there will be less stress placed on you than if your elbow is far away from your body.

Stretches are effective in taking away the mounting stress of repetitive movements (refer to the Safe Styles Stretching Guide). By understanding the postures that increase your injury risk, you can avoid them and, instead, use methods that keep you in more mid-range positions. The positions to watch out for are:

• Ulnar Deviation (bending the wrist towards the little finger) • Wrist Flexion (bending the wrist down) • Over stretching of the thumb

Sign the Training Checklist (4 minutes)

Have the employees sign the Training Checklist and explain that the checklist will be used to ensure that every employee is well informed of ergonomics at work. Encourage everyone to ask questions as they come up. File the Training Checklist in the Training Records section of the Safe Styles Manager’s Information Kit.

Summarize, Q&A, and Wrap Up (1 minute)

Summarize the meeting by reinforcing the importance of proper ergonomics. Ask the group if they have any questions or comments. Thank them for their participation and express your confidence that working together as a team can reduce the number of ergonomic injuries.

Welcome/Introduction

Welcome everyone with enthusiasm. Encourage the staff to ask questions and offer suggestions throughout the meeting.

Purpose & Agenda (1 minute)

The purpose of this meeting is to inform all employees about the tasks associated with hand and wrist Repetitive Motion Injuries and how to prevent them from occurring in your salon.

Hand Issues (7 minutes)

There are few occupations that rely on their hands as much as a hair stylist. The positions maintained during the work day can lead to increased stress on the structures that pass through the Carpal Tunnel. These structures include the tendons that connect the muscles of the forearm to the fingers and thumb, the nerves that operate those muscles, and the blood vessels (which deliver the oxygen and nutrition to these structures to keep them healthy). As you’ve learned by watching the Ergonomics DVD, the tendons that operate the muscles on the top surface of the hand can also be over stressed by maintaining end-range positions and over working the muscles.

You may not realize just how much force you’re applying through the methods and tools you use everyday. For example, if you hold your hand in an ulnar deviated position (bending the wrist towards the little finger) you are actually reducing the size of your carpal tunnel by as much as 50%. When this position is maintained over time, the tendons that pass through the carpal tunnel may squeeze down on the nerves thereby causing tingling or numbness in your hand. When you are opening and closing your shears hundreds of times per haircut, the stress may build up to the point of discomfort if you don’t do something to help yourself. What can you do? A series of four stretches were found to be effective in taking away the mounting stress of repetitive hand movements. These are:

1) Table Top Stretch - Start in position A, move your hand to position B, keeping the fingers as straight as possible.

2) Straight Fist – Start in position A, move your hand to position C, keeping the last joint of your fingers straight.

A B

A C

Page 75: Supercuts Shop Talk

3) Claw – Start in position A, keep the first row of knuckles straight, but bend the other two joints to position D.

4) Fist – Start in position A, then form a full fist as in position E, with your thumb on the outside of your index finger.

*These four stretches should be performed 5-8 times per day.

If you feel pain in your hand with repetitive activities, this is not due to pressure on the nerves passing through the carpal tunnel. Pain may indicate a neck injury and you should see your medical provider immediately to diagnosis this.

Over Stretching of the Thumb and Wrist Flexion (5 minutes)

An area to concentrate on is the tendon that operates your thumb. When you keep your thumb in an extended position, stress may build up in the tendon sheath which sets up a disorder known as deQueirvain’s Syndrome. This syndrome is distinguished by a tightness that occurs in the tendon on the top of your hand leading to the thumb. Here is how you can determine if yours is unnaturally tight:

A D

A E

Page 76: Supercuts Shop Talk

deQuervain’s Stretch - Start in position A, then bring your thumb into the palm of your hand as shown in position B. Next, wrap your fingers around your thumb as shown in position C. Now, gently tilt your wrist downward towards the floor as seen in position D, until you feel a stretch from your thumb toward your wrist. If you do feel tightness, perform this stretch 5 – 8 times per day holding each stretch for 5 seconds to reduce the stress though this tendon.

Another position commonly performed repetitively by stylists is bending your wrist downward to an extreme (wrist flexion). The goal is to keep your wrist out of these end-range positions.

By understanding the postures that increase your injury risk, you can avoid them and, instead, use methods that keep you in more mid-range positions. The positions to watch out for again are: • Ulnar Deviation • Wrist Flexion • Over stretching of the thumb

Summarize, Q&A, and Wrap Up (2 minutes)

You can reduce your risk of injury during your career. We can educate you on work practices that may increase your risk for injury, but only you can put these practices to work. Ask the employees if they have any further questions or comments. Thank them for their participation and express your confidence that the number of Repetitive Motion Injuries that occur at your salon can be reduced.
