Choosing the right site for your Polytunnel

Getting to Know Your Polytunnel

PREPARATION

When selecting a site for your new polytun-nel there are a few things to consider. The orientation of the tunnel is not as critical as it would be with a Greenhouse, the tunnel will diffuse the light throughout the day.

Choose a spot sheltered from the wind forinstance next to a hedge, trees or wall, however equally choose a spot that has the maximum amount of sunlight.

During the hottest days we advise keeping the door open to let the air flow through.

Keep an access of approx 1 meter around the Polytunnel for cleaning and maintenance.

Always wear gloves when constructing as there may be sharp edges.

Always use the correct tool for the job

Consider other people around the site of your new polytunnel, particularly children and animals.

Take care when using sharp tools.

Keep your work area tidy and organised, a tidy work area is a safe work area.

Do not leave holes open for long periods of time, cover them to reduce the risk of injury.

Tie back any loose hair and wear suitable clothing and shoes.

Take care when lifting heavy items of your kit.

When using ladders ensure they are on level ground

PREPARATION

When starting each phase of the construction lay out all materials close to hand. This will ensure you have the right parts and don’t forget to fit the right parts.

Always wear suitable personal protective equiptment

ENSURING YOUR GROUND TUBES ARE SQUARED

PLEASE NOTE: Regardless of which ground tube option you have chosen the same method of squaring will apply.

It is essential that the ground tubes are fitted accurately to ensure the polytunnel is constructed to a satisfactory standard

Make sure the ground tubes are in line and set to a constant height with their opposite ground tube.

Install each corner and run a builders string around the perimeter to aid with installing the inner ground tubes

Check that the ground tubes are at 90º to each other by measuring 3m down the length, 4m along the width and checking the resulting measurement between the two points is 5m.

The diagonal measurements should be equal to each other

ENSURING YOUR GROUND TUBES ARE SQUARED

X= 10ft 12ft 14ft

Y = 5ft or 6ft see order details

Your Polytunnel should be level side to side, but can have a slope on the length (within reason). Measure corner to corner to double check the foundations are square

GROUND TUBES

STANDARD GROUND TUBES WITH CONCRETING BAR

Dig holes for each ground tube ensuring they are square to each other.

Insert the concreting bar into the ground tube, then drop the tube assembly into the ground.

Using a hammer, drive ground tube into the ground, using a timber block to protect the end of the tube.

Pour concrete mixture into holes to completely cover concrete bar and ensuring the ground tube is straight.

Once concrete has set, back fill the holes with earth.

PARTS: FR-SGLGT125, MP-CONCBAR

TOOLS: Spade, Hammer, Timber block, String line, spirit level, tape, wheel barrow, setting out pins / pegs

Use a spirit level to ensure ground tubes are squared.
