may volunteer for com-

munity service. This year

our club worked on a va-

riety of jobs around cam-

pus. We transplanted a

tree (which was in the

way of construction work)

at Sanford Hall, we

pruned overgrown shrubs

around the campus entry

sign, and we enhanced

an existing shrub bed

with transplanted peren-

nials that also were slat-

ed for removal in front of

Sanford Hall. Each year

we look forward to partici-

pating in this event for it

is a great way to give

back to our campus and

community.

In February, six Turf Club

members from SUNY-Delhi competed in the na-tional Turf Bowl Competi-tion, held in conjunction with the annual Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) meeting in Las Vegas, NV. It has been several years since Delhi has been represented at the national Turf Bowl. This year, two teams, one 4-man team and a 2-man competed. Teams were quizzed on their knowledge of turfgrass biology, pest management, general maintenance pro-cedures, and their ability to solve situational problems. The SUNY Delhi “A” Team (Cameron Cooper, Ben-jamin Dewan, Tim Bruno, and Nicholas Pennella) were able to place in the

top 1/3 of all teams, placing 34

th overall, and 11

th in

case studies category. Julia Ward, the advisor to the Turf Club was instru-mental to preparing the students to compete in the Turf Bowl, including help-ing the club study and raise enough funds to assist with their expenses. “I was re-ally proud of our students- both how they performed in the competition and how they conducted themselves during the week. We didn’t really know what to expect on the exam, so I think what we learned this year will help us improve next year.” Turf Club members raised by funds through leaf raking, alumni and su-perintendent association donations (thank you NEGCSA!) and completing community service. We

look forward to com-peting next year!

PLANET Student Career Days is a huge event ded-icated to college students studying in programs re-lated to the green indus-try. PLANET Student Ca-reer Days includes com-petitions, a career fair with employers from around the country and numerous informational workshops. This year the event was held at Kansas State Uni-versity in Manhattan, KS. Keegan Bush, Alexan-der Killmeier, Patrick Dolan and I were the “team” for Delhi. Some of the competitions in which we participated included Woody Plant Identifica-tion, Wood Construction, Paver Installation and Planting Installation. On our way to Kansas State University we stopped at the Jefferson National Expansion Me-morial (Gateway to the West), in St. Louis, MS and the Missouri Bo-tanical Gardens. Both were fabu-lous to see and enjoyed by all. Birgitta Brophy and Julia Ward, advisors to the club, were the staff that accom-panied us on this trip. PLANET Day of Service On April 20,

2012, the club

participated in the

PLANET Day of

Service. This is a

date set by

A student service

learning oppor-tunity presented itself this past fall to the students of the Planting De-sign class. The Delaware Coun-ty Historical As-sociation con-tacted Birgitta Brophy, in the Landscape and Design Program, about the possibility of assisting them in developing a conceptual master plan of their facility. As part of the de-sign process, historic and environ-mental research, site visits, a meeting with the New York State Dept. of Transportation Assistant Regional Engineer and the several board mem-bers allowed students a good basis from which to develop initial design concepts. The Board Members were looking for new ideas in improving the vehicular and pedestrian circulation, visibility along the state highway, building layout for existing and new buildings and landscaping comple-mentary of the historic nature of the site were part of the client needs. In December four final design concepts were presented to several Board members. Design solutions proposed the moving of a church owned by the Association to the current site, creat-ing a “Village Green” in which visitors could easily circulate from one part of the property to another, incorporating rural community elements like or-chards and meadows and a new en-trance that would allow visitors to pass through an old toll gate house as would have been done when travel-ling the Catskill Turnpike in the 1800’s. Our students were praised for their professional presentations and solutions. Students involved included Keegan Bush, Daniel Glogowski, Alexander Killmeier, and Matthew Robinson.

Campus Beautifica-tion: The Delhi Beautifica-tion Com-mittee has been very instrumen-tal in en-hancing the visual and physical aspects of Delhi Col-lege. This committee

is comprised of faculty and staff from all areas of campus. One of the Committee's duties is to review up-coming construction projects. Often the Committee is able to provide rec-ommendations, based on the groups combined knowledge and prior expe-riences, which save the campus money and other resources. For ex-ample, this year many shrubs were saved from the renovation work be-ing done on Sanford Hall. The exist-ing shrubs were balled and bur-lapped so that they could be trans-planted to other locations on campus by students in the Introduction to Horticulture Class. This same class also planted numerous grape hya-cinths and narcissus bulbs, in key locations, to provide much needed early spring color on campus and learn the process of spring bulb planting. These bulbs were pur-chased by the Beautification Com-mittee. The cooperative bond that has been formed between our de-partment and the committee has pro-vided hands-on learning experiences to students, cost savings to the cam-pus and significant improvements to the Campus environment. Kathy Gillooley and Julia Ward were di-rectly involved in these efforts both as committee members and Intro-duction to Horticulture lab instructor and instructional support associate respectively. Thanks ladies!
