BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

• Lack of access to clean water is a major worldwide problem affecting 780 million people.

• Therefore it is planned to develop a water purification product for use in undeveloped areas of the globe.

• The product must be simple to use, affordable, and pose a low impact on the environment.

OUR CUSTOMER: SUB-SAHARAN REGION OF AFRICA

• 345 million people in this region lack access to clean water.

• This number represents about half of the total world population without access to clean water.

• Lack of access to clean water results in other complicating issues such as decreased sanitation, decreased income, decreased education levels, and a general loss of time with family.

• These issues result from the massive amount of time that must be spent carrying water from the generally unclean water sources to the family dwelling.

PROPOSED PRODUCT DESIGN/FUNCTION

• The proposed product is a solar still for the distillation of clean drinking water.

• The product relies on the natural processes of evaporation and condensation, no chemicals and/or filters are needed.

• During evaporation particulates are left behind, microbes are eliminated by the Sun’s UV radiation.

• The base container will be black in color and will be constructed of stamped

aluminum for strength, light weight, and durability. • The cover/evaporation collector will be constructed of Plexiglas in an

extruded aluminum frame.

• Plexiglas G-UVT will be used, it features a high level of UV transmission.
