Materials• Sandpit or large box with rice/bird seed• Play space• Multiple copies of laminated cut-outs of five sun protection images or SunSmart Countdown number characters (see SunSmart Countdown characters or SunSmart Countdown images sheets)

For variations to the game – copy the different images onto different coloured card and have enough for each child to have a complete set of five plus four extra sets (for spare cards).

Instructions1. Bury the laminated pictures in the sand pit/rice box (or alternatively hide them around a designated space).

2. Children try to dig up/find as many SunSmart items as they can.To add to the challenge, once all of the items have been found, children then need to try swapping their items so they end up with a complete set of five cards – either five of the same image or a set of five sun protection measures/SunSmart Countdown number characters. They can only swap one card at a time.

OR

3. Children can only dig up one of each of the SunSmart Countdown cards. If theyfind one they already have, they need to re-bury/re-hide it. They need to find allfive cards in the set to complete the game.

Variations Instead of burying or hiding the cards, children can be given a random set of cards. They

then need to work out which of the SunSmart Countdown set they are missing. They need to swap one card at a time with other children to try and get a complete set.

Try doing this so it is a ‘silent swap’ and the children can only use gestures to explain which card they want to get – they can’t show the pictures to each other.

Children not only need to get a complete set of SunSmart Countdown cards but they all need to be the same colour/different colours.

Try the activity with a set time limit for the swap.

Stage 1 NumeracyOutcomes:WMES1.2 Uses objects, actions, imagery, technology and/or trial and error to explore mathematical problems.NES1.1 Counts to 30 and orders, reads and represents numbers in the range 0 to 20.

SunSmart UV AlertLook at these SunSmart UV Alerts from different places around Australia.

1. Colour the graphs to show the UV Index ranges.2. Fill in the gaps in the SunSmart UV Alert Table. Can you find each place in an atlas? Which state or territory are they in?

Stage 2 Numeracy Activities Outcomes:DS2.1 Gathers and organises data, displays data using tables and graphs and interprets the results.SLS2.13 Discusses how safe practices promote personal well-being.

If you think this is too difficult for the children you can give the following hints: Have a guess as to what the 2 letter words might be T = 4 There is no mathematical formula – students need to work from the message

back to the letters and numbers

AnswerTo stay safe in the sun, slip, slop, slap, seek and slide.

UV Index number puzzle1. Try to fill in the missing numbers. Just like the UV Index levels, the missingnumbers are from 1 to 11.2. The numbers in each row add up to totals to the right.3. The numbers in each column add up to the totals along the bottom.

Stage 2 Numeracy Activities Outcomes:NS2.2 Uses mental and written strategies for addition and subtraction involving two digit numbers.WMS2.2 selects and uses appropriate mental and written strategies, or technology, to solve problems.
