Laid-back and pleasure-packed, the Sunshine Coast is many things to many people. Locals enjoy its 2,400 hours of annual sunshine and slower-paced lifestyle, which does not equate to lack of activity. They enthusiastically share with visitors the myriad offerings of water sports – scuba diving, sailing, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and swimming – as well as opportunities to golf, hike, cycle, snow-shoe, birdwatch and beachcomb. The joy of the Sunshine Coast is that most of these can be done year-round.

An alluring aspect of the Sunshine Coast is its wonderful meld. It pleases both soft- and hard-core outdoor adventurers: romantics love its luxurious B&Bs, marine resorts and intimate spas; naturalists revel in its rural lifestyle; green-thumbers delight in the glorious gardens; and those with a cultural bent will not be disap-pointed. The tranquil environment attracts musicians, writers, artists and craftspeople, and many artisans welcome visitors to their tucked-away studios. No matter how small the community, it will boast some impressive galleries.

Throughout the Sunshine Coast, a vibrant First Nations history is celebrated through tours, totem poles and wonderful works of art. And each year a bounty of fabulous festivals is celebrated from folksy, funky fairs such as Creek Daze in Roberts Creek to some that have garnered an

international reputa-tion such as Powell

River’s Kathaumixw Choral Festival and

Sechelt’s Festival of the Written Arts. Both Pender Harbour and Gibsons host annual Jazz Festivals and, unique for Gibsons, are the Fibre Arts Festival and the International Outrigger Canoe Race. Pender Harbour hosts the annual May Day Festival, celebrated for 60 years!

Well-mapped and amply signed, the Sunshine Coast is easily toured on your own. However, for special interests – to see the best gardens, perhaps? – consider a guided or self-guided tour. Don’t rush your visit: meander waterfront walks, take a boat charter, find that gem of a restaurant on the waterfront or take a walk in the woods. Explore the diverse communities that edge the Pacific, places that embrace their ocean neighbour every day of the year.

The ideal way to savour this picturesque coastline is with the insights of a local guide. So here we are, with an insider’s view of what makes the Sunshine Coast special. Small-town hospitality in astound-ing natural surroundings awaits you, whether experienced on its own or as part of the circle tour route with Vancouver Island and points beyond. Of course, this journey can be just as effectively accom-plished whether it begins from Vancouver or from Vancouver Island.

Whether you start your journey from Vancouver or Vancouver Island prepare for scenic overload as the ferry brings you to the Sunshine Coast. Then follow the highway that traces the coastline, being sure to venture off to find the unique, tucked-away gems that make this vacation wonderland a special experience.

When arriving from Vancouver, follow a meandering route along Marine Drive past folksy cottages perched above beaches to the scenic, seaside village of GIBSONS. The picturesque harbour of the historic town may look familiar. Yes, there is Molly’s Reach, the restaurant in The Beachcombers, a CBC TV series that has recently been revived in two TV movies. Glorious Gibsons has many allures, to mention a few:• Beach hop along Gower Point Road

by car or bike to Bonniebrook. Swim at Secret Beach, prowl the pebble shoreline at Ocean Beach Esplanade, fly fish from shore, let the kids play and picnic. In the rosy glow of the sunset, watch cruise ships heading to Alaska.

• On a golden-lit summer evening, stroll the wharf and enjoy “Music in the Landing.” Other summertime events are the exciting International Outrigger Canoe Races and the Fibre Arts Festival, while in winter the harbour hosts carol ships.

• Take in the harbour’s eclectic mix

from classy yachts to colourful dinghies. Sign on with a charter to cast your line or learn to sail.

• Poke into shops and galleries, jam-packed with paraphernalia.

• Visit KEATS AND GAMBIER ISLANDS by passenger ferry, or paddle or motor on your own to hike, cycle, laze on beaches and, on Gambier, enjoy a B&B stay.

From Gibsons, Highway 101 leads you leisurely along to the ROBERTS CREEK turnoff and its welcoming oceanfront. Clustered around a beach and wharf are a few funky shops and restaurants; charming cottages and posh homes can be glimpsed among the greenery and gardens. Its charms are varied:

• Hang out at the general store, chat with locals and have an ice cream cone. Ask about August’s Creek Daze and the fall Mushroom Festival.

• Relax on a driftwood bench and look out upon unparalleled ocean scenery.

• Glorious gardens can be seen along roadways, lanes or bordering beaches.

• Paddle off on a guided kayak excursion to catch the golden rays of sunset or play in phosphorescence in the silver glow of the moon.

• In winter book a guided snowshoe tour in the backcountry.

• After leaving Roberts Creek, turn off at Wilson Creek to get supplies or to reach the airport where you can book a flight-seeing excursion.

SUNSHINE COAST INSIGHTSCULTURAL TREATS The natural beauty and tranquility of the Sunshine Coast lures creative people like the proverbial bee to sweet nectar. Many came for a visit and stayed to live and create. From live theatre and film to innovative dance and music, from in-home studios to impressive galleries, from folksy craft markets to fantastic festivals, the Sunshine Coast celebrates the arts. The Coast Cultural Alliance facilitates and encourages the arts community throughout the Sunshine Coast. Check the web site for up-to-date information regarding cultural events. www.suncoastarts.com

• Purple Banner Self-Guided Tours from Gibsons to Powell River – including stops on Gambier and Texada Islands – invite you to drop in on working artists. Pick up the Purple Banner Guide on BC Ferries and in public places, and watch for the banners on display at home studios, galleries and other arts resources.

• Arts & Culture Calendar is a monthly listing that details current arts events in the Sunshine Coast communities. It is available at Visitor Info Centres, public places and on BC Ferries.

• Blue Artisan Signs along the highway and main roads point the way to artists’ working studios, whether centrally located or tucked away.

Dazzling DAVIS BAY is a sandy arc that hums with year-round activity. Its low-tide beach invites participation on a hot summer’s day and its waterfront walk is perfect for off-season storm watching. Spend time lapping up the friendliness of this small community.• Walk the shore-hugging path, rest on

a bench and savour the sunset; it’s one of the best spots on the Sunshine Coast to do so.

• Take part in the sandcastle competi-tion in summer or be one of the stalwart souls who plunge into chilly waters during the Polar Bear Swim. Whatever the season, there is a buzz about Davis Bay.

SECHELT, the Lower Sunshine Coast’s largest town, is located between the Sechelt Inlet – a mountain-enclosed inland sea – and the azure Pacific Ocean. Its setting is as unique as its attractions are appealing. The rich heritage of the Shishalh Nation is every-where. Stop at the House of Hewhiwus and take a short walk to admire ocean-facing totem poles. Don’t miss:• Rockwood Lodge, a lovely heritage

building surrounded by gardens, where the annual Festival of the Written Arts is held in August. Also in August, car buffs arrive for the Sleepy Hollow Rod Run and Show and Shine.

• On Porpoise Bay, have lunch or a brew overlooking the water, book a fishing, kayak or sightseeing charter, and catch a floatplane flight.

• Book a scuba diving charter to revel in underwater treats.

• Golfers head uphill to find challenges and views as well as friendly locals.

• Birding opportunities abound in every

season. Visit Sechelt Marsh on the Inlet and head to Sargeant Bay for various sightings.

• Hop on the bike saddle; there are more than 100 trails offering groovy fat-tire challenges.

Continuing north is sleepy HALFMOON BAY, a sweeping curvature of shoreline backed by greenery and accented by scattered sandy beaches, shimmering cliffs and rugged, log-strewn pockets.• Visit the heritage general store; order lunch or ice cream.• Walk out on the wharf to watch fish-ing trawlers arrive – take your camera!

Hidden from the highway, SECRET COVE is one of the Sunshine Coast’s busiest marinas. Even winter finds this sheltered harbour bustling with boats. Take time to: • Hop a water taxi to Thormanby Island

for time on a sandy beach. • In summer, dine overlooking the

bustling marina. In winter, sail in – it will be a fine, blustery ride – and enjoy the safe anchorage.

Sechelt, Bays & Coves

SUNSHINE COAST INSIGHTSGOLF ON THE COAST With up to 2,400 hours of annual sunshine the Sunshine Coast is a must-play destination for keen golfers. Put your clubs in the car and follow a golf trail along the Sunshine Coast to seek out eight very different and extremely scenic courses. There’s even a short hop to an island.• Langdale Heights RV Par 3 Golf Resort. Close to the Langdale ferry terminal, take a warm-up on this welcoming course with panoramic vistas. Open during summer.• Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club. Along the highway at Roberts Creek, this 18-hole, par 71, 6,165-yard course surprises with its challenges. There’s a restaurant and pro club and friendly local players. Open year-round.• Sechelt Golf & Country Club. Warm up on the driving range before taking on the 18-hole, 6,553-yard course. Don’t be distracted by its forest setting with views of Porpoise Bay from some holes. Open year-round. • Pender Harbour Golf Club. Close to Madeira Park, the lush, 9-hole, 3,005-yard green space offers up enough challenges to make the play memorable. Have lunch on the patio in the full facility clubhouse. Open year-round.• Myrtle Point Golf Course. South of Powell River, the 18-hole, 6,923-yard Les Furber- designed course has four sets of tee boxes to suit every level of player. Astounding views of the Strait of Georgia may distract on the beautifully set course. Open year-round.• Glenrosa Golf Course. North of Powell River, the 9-hole, executive course is a short (1,317 yards) and sweet play. Open year-round.• Nootka Dunes Golf Course. 9-hole, 2,100-yard executive course in the heart of Westview. Open year-round. • Deer Leap Golf Course. On Texada Island, a close island-hop (only 8 km/5 mi) from Powell River by BC Ferries. Golfers can enjoy this 9-hole executive course year-round.

Follow the winding highway to reach the communities of Madeira Park, Garden Bay and Irvines Landing that cluster around a sheltered shoreline and make up the area known as PENDER HARBOUR. A haven of natural bays and inlets, as well as forested lakes, has earned it the moniker “Venice of the North.” It is a natural wonderland with new parks like the water-front Millennium Park and wooded Francis Point Marine Park highlighting the shoreline. • Take a leisurely water taxi cruise to

explore the coastline and visit nearby islands.

• Fish or boat on the four lakes tucked down Garden Bay Road.

• At Ruby Lake Lagoon see nesting wood ducks, red-legged frogs, painted turtles and much more.

• Go scuba diving in any season in the protected waters of Pender Harbour with its astounding sea life and water clarity.

• Book a fishing charter or sightseeing eco-tour and take stunning photos.

• Golf an undulating course where you may see elk and deer.

• Don’t miss the fall Pender Harbour Jazz Festival for a great mix of performers in various venues.

• Stay in an oceanfront resort, B&B or in one of many first-rate campgrounds.

At the top end of the Lower Sunshine Coast, the tiny community of EGMONT clings to the shoreline and Earls Cove ferry terminal leads on to the Upper Sunshine Coast. The woodsy settlement of Egmont has few commercial outlets, but it is a haven of activities. The term “rich in nature” aptly applies.

It is the stepping-off point for two of the Sunshine Coast’s most sublime natural experiences: Princess Louisa Inlet and the Skookumchuck Narrows.

• Aboard a charter boat or by water taxi or floatplane, see Princess Louisa Inlet and Chatterbox Falls. The day-trip showcases a mosaic of green-carpeted mountains and the magical fjord where as many as 60 waterfalls

tumble down granite facades. • Trek an easy, 4-km (2.5 mi) forested

trail into Skookumchuck Narrows where tidal waters forced through a narrow, shallow channel result in one of the world’s fastest flowing rapids.

• Take a boat to Hotham Sound where Freil Falls cascade down 450 metres. Harmony Islets, pristine isles below the falls, is one of BC’s newest marine parks.

• Check into a wilderness lodge for non-stop adventures.

From Earls Cove the ferry departs the Lower Sunshine Coast to reach SALTERY BAY on the Upper Sunshine Coast. The 50-minute trip delights photographers with small, verdant islands and towering, thickly carpeted mountains.

Arrive at SALTERY BAY’s glorious wilderness setting. Historically named for the fish saltery that was here in the early 1900s, it welcomes as you drive among tall stands of sky-reaching evergreens. Enter Saltery Bay Provincial Park, an astounding green and water-front space that hugs the ocean and pro-vides a close-to-wilderness experience. • Swim and picnic on smooth, wave-

lapped boulders and prowl among tidal pools full of dazzling starfish, sea urchins and scurrying crabs. Watch for orca whales and sea lions offshore.

• Dive deep – scuba divers will encoun-ter The Emerald Princess, a larger-than-life bronze mermaid.

• Saltery Bay is a trailhead for the 180-km (112 mi) Sunshine Coast Trail – prepare to be challenged.

Whether you approach picturesque POWELL RIVER from the Lower Sunshine Coast or from Vancouver Island, you’ll be struck by the beauty and the history of this oceanfront town. Nestled between ocean and forest and rich in lakes and rivers, this hub of the Upper Sunshine Coast successfully combines the great outdoors with cul-tural appeal. In 2004, Powell River was named the Cultural Capital of Canada

• Capture the spirit of Marine Avenue. Eat in funky bistros – everything from Mexican to Ukrainian – weave in and out of appealing shops and galleries to choose one-of-a-kind gifts. Head downhill for an oceanside walk or head way uphill for more shops and other services.

• Become familiar with the sleepy surrounding communities such as CRANBERRY LAKE. Once an agri-cultural belt, now a residential haven, it boasts many cottage industries. Visit the local pottery shop to admire its

There are various parks and beaches with ramps to launch small boats. Check with Visitor Info Centres for locations.

Founded by a Swedish family in 1889, Lund exudes a family-friendly ambience among remnants of its early days as home to the Sliammon, Klahoose and Homalco Nations.• The updated 1895 hotel still operates and is a great place for a brew, meal or stay, and also has meeting facilities.• Charter a boat, sign on for sport fishing, sail to Desolation Sound, go diving in deep waters, take a guided mountain bike tour to explore the best trails or hike well-marked routes.• Eat fresh-caught oysters and other seafood at folksy restaurants and pubs. • Check out nearby wilderness resorts, B&Bs and health resorts.

warm inlet waters, usually calm for kayaking and fishing.

• Take a guided kayak excursion, or head out on your own, to paddle into Desolation Sound or nearby Okeover Inlet.

• Cycle a linear route or trek to reach weather-worn bluffs or windblown dunes with incredible views.

• Rent a cottage on the beach or stay in a quaint B&B.
