Sunset Elementary Is dedicated to meeting the needs of all learners in a safe environment. We strive to give each child the opportunity to inquire and succeed, as open-minded and globally aware life-long learners. We believe that educating the whole child as 21st century learners is the key to the development of caring, innovative, responsible, and reflective citizens who take action in their community and the world.
Administrators’ Message
We would like to take this opportunity to wish our Sunset Community a happy and healthy 2020!
The beginning of the New Year is a time to reflect and make resolutions to improve the quality of
our lives. Here are a few resolutions that will support continued student achievement and
growth.
1. Make the time to eat dinner with your family. Consider turning off the TV, Smartphone, and
computer to focus on each family member.
2. Read at least 15 minutes daily with your child to participate in Holiday Reading Challenge.
3. Volunteer 1 hour each month at school.
4. Review math facts with your child each evening for 5 minutes. Also, complete First in Math
activities online.
5. Sit and play a board game with your family.
6. Support your child’s work on their science fair project, but let them do the work.
As parents, we are our child’s most influential teacher. Partnering with our Sunset PYP Learning
Community can make a positive difference in your child’s life. We truly enjoy working with you
and your children each day.
Finally, as we begin 2020, our staff continues to be committed to our work as an IB/PYP School.
As a PYP school, we address the needs of inquiring learners that include the ability to communi-
cate, think, and take risks. We are committed to ensuring that our students have control over
their own learning to think analytically and critically, and to work collaboratively. Please
reinforce the PYP Learner Profile at home.
Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!

Preparation for the school Science Fair is well underway!
All students in Grades 3-5 are required to complete an individual or team project.
Teams are limited to 3 students. Presentations will be completed in class using
the county rubric between January 6th and January 29th. Teachers will send home
individual classroom timelines as well as copies of the science fair rubric. The top
3 projects from each class will compete in the School Fair. Winning projects from
each of grades 3-5 will compete in the County Fair.
All students in Grades PreK-2 will complete class projects at school. Those
students who would like to do a science fair project at home are encouraged to
do so, but it is not required. Individual projects completed by Grades PreK-2 will
be on display with the classroom projects, but will not be judged in the school
fair.
3 week-long Science Fair Clubs were run in November and December for students
in Grades 3-5. Students had fun completing several experiments and designing an
engineering project. Those students all received a tri-fold board for being a part of
the club.
We also held a parent help night at the December 4th PTA meeting. Science
practices were explained, as well as the timeline for completion. Helpful hints to
get children started were shared with all who attended.
Important dates:
• Classroom Science Fair Presentations – January 6 - January 29
• School Science Fair Judging – February 3 - 6
• School Science Fair Assembly and winners announced – February 7
• AACPS Elementary Innovators of Science and Engineering Challenge
