About usSunderland College has been established for over 120 years and is one of the largest colleges in the North East of England with over 17,000 students enrolled. The quality of our education and the support we provide to our students is paramount to us and that is why we’re committed to developing our programmes to ensure that they meet the highest possible quality standards. Our location

Sunderland College is located within the City of Sunderland on the north east coast of England and is nestled between countryside and coastline.

The city has a population of around 300,000 and is well connected to the nearby cities of Newcastle and Durham. Newcastle airport can be reached in less than 45 minutes.

Leave the city centre and within minutes beautiful countryside and coastlines surround you, making it ideal for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling and water sports. Within the city centre there are public parks, historical attractions and modern shopping facilities to enjoy. On the riverside you will find the National Glass Centre, celebrating Sunderland’s 1,300-year-old glass-making tradition.

There's a range of cultural attractions in the city centre including the magnificent Empire Theatre, the largest theatre between Edinburgh and Leeds, which regularly hosts major West End productions, as well as the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.

The city is also home to Sunderland AFC, one of the UKs leading football clubs. The club’s stadium has a capacity of 49,000 and is regarded as one of the best football venues in the country.

Other nearby sporting attractions include Gateshead International Stadium, which hosts a number of international and European athletic championships, and Durham County Cricket Club which hosts international cricket matches featuring teams from Pakistan, India, Australia, Bangladesh, the West Indies and Zimbabwe.

Our campusesWe have four campuses located across the City of Sunderland, all of our campuses benefit from the latest technologies in our classrooms, studios and workshops to enhance your student experience.

Our campuses include:

Bede Campus

Home of our Arts and Sports academies and located near the city centre. Bede campus is used for many of our programmes including A-Level and vocational.

Washington Campus

Washington is a £10 million development based in the west of the city. A-Level and higher education programmes are delivered at our Washington campus.

Hylton Campus

Hylton campus is focussed on providing vocational programmes.

St Peter’s Campus

St Peter’s is a specialist A-Level campus, located near the city centre on the riverside next to the University of Sunderland, St Peter’s campus.

At all of our campuses, students can access fully resourced learning centres with the latest wireless technologies. All centres have a range of quiet, group or individual study areas and internet and email facilities. Colour printing and scanning services are also available.

IELTS Testing CentreIELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills - listening, reading, writing and speaking - for people who want to study or work where English is the language of communication.

More than 6,000 education institutions, faculties, government agencies and professional organisations around the world recognise IELTS. It is essential to have an IELTS score if you are seeking to progress to further study at a UK college or university.

Sunderland College has the only IELTS Testing Centre in the north east of England. We offer IELTS tests regularly throughout the year at our Bede campus.

Accommodation

The College places great importance in assisting students to find suitable accommodation, which will suit their needs and lifestyle.

We require all of our students to stay in University accommodation for your first year of study as this will help you to familiarise yourself with your surroundings and meet people of many different nationalities.

There are two choices of accommodation, Clanny House and U-Student Village: Forge.

Clanny House

The College, through its partnership with the University of Sunderland, is able to offer students the opportunity to stay in the University’s modern purpose-built student accommodation, which is very clean, safe and secure.

Clanny House is close to local shops and services and offers single study bedrooms in flats varying from two to seven bed units.

Features include:

• Kitchen

• Lounge / dining area which is furnished

• A shared bathroom (including shower / hand basin and toilet)

• Restricted shared broadband Wi-Fi access is available in all flats

• 24 hour CCTV monitoring

U-Student Village: Forge

The University Forge accommodation is arranged into blocks of housing and within each block there are self-contained flats.

The numbers of bedrooms in each flat range from four to nine and each flat includes:

• High specification kitchen (including dishwasher)

• Lounge / dining area which is furnished

• Showers with under floor heating

• Separate toilets

• Separate study bedrooms with vanity basins

• Restricted shared broadband Wi-Fi access

Within the Forge - U-Student Village there is also a social space called The Meeting Place, a place to meet, eat, drink relax and form new friendships. There is also a small convenience store selling daily essentials. Further facilities on-site include a coin operated laundry, free to use cash machine and common room with access to PCs. The Village is very secure with gated access, 24/7 security personnel and CCTV throughout.

IELTS Preparation programme

Who is this course for?

This course is for people wanting to prepare for their IELTS examination and is designed to suit your individual language level.

What are the key things I will learn?

This course focuses on the language and skills necessary for the IELTS exam in combination with general English to improve grammar, vocabulary and communicative skills. It helps develop accurate pronunciation and intonation, improves listening, writing, and reading skills and covers all aspects of English grammar, relevant to your level.

How long will the course last?

Flexible programmes of study:

• 1 year

• 2 terms

• 1 term

• 1 month

What do you need to apply for the course?

You’ll need to be over 18. If you require a tier 4 VISA you’ll also need a Common European Framework B1, IELTS Band Score 4.5.

Business English

Who is this course for?

Cambridge English: Business Certificates are designed to give you practical skills to help you succeed in English speaking international business environments. This programme introduces students to Business English and is for individuals who have not yet worked in business as well as those who have begun working and have some experience of business environments.

Cambridge English: Business Certificates are recognised by employers, ministries, government bodies and professional organisations throughout the world.

What are the key things I will learn?

Through the course the lecturer will assess progress and give individuals regular feedback regarding the four skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking; grammar and vocabulary.

At the end of the course students will complete the Cambridge BEC Exam.

How long will the course last?

An intensive Business English programme is four weeks of full-time study.

What do you need to apply for the course?

An intermediate level of English is required to start the course: CEFR Level B1, IELTS score 4.5.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages: Cambridge English Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)

Who is this course for?

This course is for teachers (or aspiring teachers) of English, whatever the teaching background or experience.

What are the key things I will learn?

This course prepares you for The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT), from University of Cambridge ESOL. The classes will enhance your classroom teaching, raise your language awareness and increase your confidence in a classroom situation. The TKT course focuses on the core teaching knowledge needed by English teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world.

The course covers:

• Language and background to language learning and teaching

• Planning lessons and use of resources for language teaching

• Managing the teaching and learning process

How long will the course last?

3 weeks.

What do you need to apply for the course?

You should have a level of education suitable for entry to higher education, plus an IELTS band score of 5, Common European Framework Level B2.

You must also be over the age of 18 to apply.

Who is the course for?

The course is available to all international learners aged 19 and over.

What are the key things I will learn?

English language: speaking, listening, reading and writing is improved through English classes (20 hours per week). Learners join evening sessions in their chosen area covering the following:

• Digital imaging & Photoshop

How long will the course last?

The course lasts for 2 weeks.

What do you need to apply for the course?

Intermediate English level (IELTS 4.5 / CEF B1).

English Plus Programmes: Art and Design

Who is the course for?

The course is available to all international learners aged 19 and over.

What are the key things I will learn?

English language: speaking, listening, reading and writing is improved through English classes (20 hours per week). Learners join evening sessions in their chosen area covering the following:

• Water colours

• Pottery & clay sculpture

• Painting & drawing

How long will the course last?

The course lasts for 2 weeks.

We offer our Summer / Winter School programmes which combine the study of:

You will also see the sights of some of the most beautiful places in the United Kingdom as well as a wide range of social activities including museum visits, going to places of local interest, sports etc.

Lessons are with qualified and experienced teachers. They offer interactive and engaging activities with a maximum class size of 15 students guaranteed.

Accommodation is arranged in the University of Sunderland's Halls of Residence. Three meals per day are included in the package, catering for a range of diets. Visits to various parts of Britain, including Oxford, Cambridge and London are also available. Foundation programmes

We have a wide choice of foundation programmes including A-Levels, BTEC National Diplomas and Access to Higher Education programmes.

These programmes are designed to help you access university so that you may progress onto a degree programme. We work in partnerships with a number of UK universities to support your progression from these programmes. The English language requirement for these programmes is IELTS score 5.5 or equivalent. English will be included in your programme and teachers will assist and support you throughout your studies.

What are the key things I will learn?

A-Level Economics looks at the dynamics between consumers, manufacturers and government. You’ll focus on micro economics answering questions like “why are house prices falling?” and “how should governments interfere in markets?” as well as macro economics answering questions like “what causes inflation?” and “how are Western markets affected by China and India?”

What are the key things that I will learn?

This course allows you to explore a wide range of texts and genres. In the first year you will look at The Catcher in the Rye and Huckleberry Finn through a given theme in society. You will also have the opportunity to write a comparative essay and creative piece.

In the second year you’ll continue to study a range of texts including The Crucible by Arthur Miller and have further opportunities to write creatively, transforming texts from one genre to another.

This is a two-year course.

Film Studies

Who is this course for?

This course is for film enthusiasts interested in developing their understanding of how film, as an art form, creates meaning and how the film industry functions.

It’s a fantastic starting point for a career in film or other media production, journalism / creative writing, marketing & advertising.

What are the key things I will learn?

This course looks at film as an art form. In the first year you will study the creative and production skills needed to develop your own short films, how film constructs meaning and raises social issues as well as the US and UK film industries.

In the second year you’ll develop critical abilities studying issues raised in urban world cinema, investigate the relationship between film producers and the meanings they intend and how audiences respond to emotional and controversial cinema.

What are the key things I will learn?

This course is for people looking to get into the legal profession, become a police officer or who simply want to find out more about the role of the justice system.

What are the key things I will learn?

This course covers key topics about the English legal system including powers of the police force, trying a defendant in court, the punishments available and the legal profession, examining the roles of barristers, solicitors and Judges.

The second year of the course focuses solely on Criminal Law with in depth insight into specific crimes such as murder, manslaughter and non-fatal offences.

Who is this course for?

This course is for people looking to move into higher education or are thinking of a career in the Sport and Recreation industry. It’s also a good course for anybody looking to develop their own sporting performance.

What are the key things I will learn?

In the first year of the course you’ll develop your own ability as a performer and official or leader, including in-depth analysis of your sporting and coaching abilities. You will also look at how a sport of your choice is run at a local and national level as well as the physiological effects of exercise and the history and development of competitive sport.

In the second year you’ll build upon your abilities as a performer, leader or official in your chosen sport and see how it is run on an international level. You will also cover the short and long term preparation and management of elite performers.

Who is this course for?

Higher education programmes

We offer a range of full time Higher National Diplomas (HNDs). These are equivalent to the first two years of an honours degree. Students completing these qualifications can then go on to study the final year of an honours degree at university.

The English Language requirement for these programmes is IELTS score 5.5 or equivalent. English will be included in your programme and teachers will assist and support you throughout your studies.
