Fourth Sunday of Advent
10:00 a.m. CHORAL EUCHARIST (BAS)
We welcome you today to St. Matthew the Apostle, Oriole Anglican Church. The entire
service is printed in the bulletin with the exception of the hymns which are found in the
blue Common Praise book in your pew. We offer a Nursery program for infants as well as
a Sunday School program for toddlers and children during the service. Following the first
hymn the children are invited to come forward for a talk about one of the Bible readings
of the day. They then go out for Nursery or Sunday School (in the Fellowship Hall) for their
own time of worship and learning and return just before communion. If your child would
prefer to remain in the service they are most welcome. We also have activity bags
available from the Sidespeople for the children’s use during the service.

COLLECT OF THE DAY (please remain standing)
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, who chose the Virgin Mary, full of grace, to be the mother of
our Lord and Saviour, now fill us with your grace, that we in all things may
embrace your will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jesus Christ
our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
for ever. Amen.
THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD
First Lesson: A Reading from Isaiah (7:10-16)
Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it
be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not
put the LORD to the test. Then Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it
too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the
Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall
bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the
time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child
knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two
kings you are in dread will be deserted.”
Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18 Chant: George Black ........................................................................... p. 812
Refrain: Show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.
Second Lesson: A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans (1:1-7)
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel
of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy
scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David
according to the flesh and was declared to be Son of God with power
according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ
our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring
about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name,
including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, To all God's
beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from
God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
6
Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church All: Thanks be to God.
Gradual Hymn 94 “Wait for the Lord, whose day is near” ............................... Taizé Community
Gospeller: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother
Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was
found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a
righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to
dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the
Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be
afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy
Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his
people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by
the Lord through the prophet: "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." When
Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he
took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a
son; and he named him Jesus. (Matthew 1:18-25)
Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ.
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Sermon: The Rev. Canon John Wilton
The Apostles’ Creed (Please stand)
Celebrant: Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say,
All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I
believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the
power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under
Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the
dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the
living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
7
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the
body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayers of the people as announced (Please stand, sit or kneel as you prefer and are
able.)
Confession and Absolution
Leader: Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he
welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins,
confident in God’s forgiveness.
Silence for reflection is kept
Celebrant: Most merciful God,
All: we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not
loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as
ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your
Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in
your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.
Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Peace (Please stand)
Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you.
All: And also with you.
THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST
Offertory Hymn: 95 “O come, divine Messiah” ............................................................ VENEZ, DIVIN MESSIE
THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS
Prayer Over The Gifts
Celebrant: Gracious God, by the power of the Spirit who sanctified the mother of your
Son, make holy all we offer you this day. We ask this in the name of Jesus
Christ the Lord. Amen.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
8
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Celebrant: Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks
and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, who in the fullness of time came
among us in our flesh, and opened to us the way of salvation. Now we watch
for the day when he will come again in power and great triumph to judge this
world, that we, without shame or fear, may rejoice to behold his appearing.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels and
with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the
glory of your name.
All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full
of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Celebrant: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have
made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word
spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your
Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us
from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought
us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely
accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to
you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my
body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper
he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,
and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is
shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it,
do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, Father, according to his
command,
All: we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming
in glory;
Celebrant: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all;
presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you,
9
gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the
sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to
your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by
the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make
them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons
and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the
head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom,
and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours,
almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Celebrant: And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For
thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread
Celebrant: God of promise, you prepare a banquet for us in your kingdom.
All: Happy are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb.
Celebrant: The gifts of God for the People of God.
All: Thanks be to God.
All baptized persons are welcome to receive Holy Communion. Those not receiving
communion may wish to receive a blessing instead. To indicate this to the priest, please cross your hands over your chest. Communicants who do not wish to drink from the chalice should not dip the bread into the cup. Instead, after eating the bread,
cross your hands over your chest as the chalice bearer passes by, or make a sign of reverence by gently touching the base of the chalice when it is presented to you.
Those drinking from the chalice are asked to assist the chalice bearer by grasping it at the base and guiding it to their lips. Any children wishing to receive from the chalice
are encouraged to stand to assist the chalice bearer.

Prayer after Communion (Please stand)
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Faithful God, in this sacrament we receive the promise of salvation. May we,
like the Virgin Mary, be obedient to your will. We ask this in the name of Jesus
Christ the Lord. Amen.
Celebrant: Glory to God,
All: whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or
imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and
in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lighting of the Advent Wreath
For the Fourth Sunday of Advent
First Voice:
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Those who follow me will not walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life.”
All: Come, Lord Jesus, come quickly.
Second Voice:
God will give you a sign, a young woman who is pregnant will have a son and will
name him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us’. (Isaiah 7:14)
First Voice:
We light the first candle to remind us of the prophets, the second for John the
Baptist, the third for Mary, and the fourth for us, as we join with them in looking
for the coming of Jesus.
Second Voice:
We thank God for the gift of love he shared with the world. Jesus, the ruler of
heaven and earth, was born into a humble and loving family to show us God’s
amazing love.
The Fourth candle is lit.
First Voice:
Let us pray.
All: Gracious God, as you came to those who have gone before us, you come to us
now in Jesus. Help us to recognize you in those around us and to care for our
neighbours as we do for ourselves. Amen.

Isaiah 7:10–16
For much of Advent and Epiphany this year we read from the book of Isaiah. Except for the
Psalms, no book of the Old Testament played such an important part in the understanding
of the early Church. Chapters 7-10 recount Isaiah's interactions with the royal court in
Jerusalem during the Syro-Ephraimite crisis of the 730s BCE. Assyria was the dominant
power of the period, and Syria and the northern Kingdom of Israel were vassal states
paying it tribute. They banded together to revolt against Assyria, and when Judah and its
king Ahaz would not join them, they attacked Judah. In his panic, Ahaz appealed to
Tiglath-Pileser, the Assyrian king, to defend Judah. This policy led ultimately to Judah's
having to pay tribute to Assyria. At the height of the crisis, facing down the wise men of
the royal court, Isaiah challenges King Ahaz to stand firm, and to ask for a sign of God's
faithfulness. When the king refuses, Isaiah points to a young woman (perhaps a royal
wife) who is pregnant. The unborn child will be the sign that God is with us (Immanu-el),
and before he is old enough to know right from wrong (adolescence) the kings of Syria
and Israel and their lands will be deserted. Indeed, less than 15 years later the Assyrians
invaded northern Israel, sacked Samaria and deported its inhabitants to the edges of its
empire. For early Christians, this “sign-word” from Isaiah in a time of empire, oppression,
and international upheaval, seemed to speak again to them as they reflected on the
coming of Jesus under the oppressive rule of Rome, in whom they recognized a new and
hoped-for deliverer, a sign that God would be always be with us—Immanu-el.
