Beauty and the Beast Many of us experienced the school play. No doubt, each of us brought differ-ent expectations to the performance. If our own son or daughter, or grand-child, or brother, or sister, or relative or friend were participating in the play, there were a variety of sights, sounds, and feelings which regaled us during the play. Some were the immediate by-product of what actually happened during that hour and a half in the Ahearn Center. But there may have been others, which were evoked by what we saw, heard, and felt during that time. For example, when the Beast (so well played by Dan Heylin) entered on stage, my attention was dramatically taken up by the antler-like protrusions on the top of the Beast’s head. Something was awakened in my memory from many, many years previous. As the Beast (Dan) moved about the stage, giving life and sad-ness to himself, my memory continued to haunt me. As the play progressed, the antlers on the Beast’s head continued to intrigue me. “Where had I seen such a character before?” Then it struck me, with no small amount of irony: THE BEAST WAS JESUS!! As Belle (Genna Simon) and the Beast interacted, discovering the reality of their true feelings for each other, I remembered that many years ago, I had seen a portrait of the “Ecce Homo” ( “Behold the Man”) pose of Jesus after He had been scourged and crowned with thorns. As I recall, the crown of thorns on the head of Jesus was not “neat and tidy,” fitting His head like a kind of cap, but it stuck out in all uneven lengths and contours. To my young child’s eye, that image of the grotesquely crowned Jesus, evoked a deep sympathy - “simpatico” - in me. It became, strange as it may sound, a favorite picture of mine. My feelings for Jesus had nothing to do with sorrow for my sins; they were welling up at the sight of this human being so tortured, so ludicrously de-picted. Seeing the Beast brought back the memories of that Jesus. As I saw Belle and the Beast accept the reality of each other and move from abhorrence to love, I thought of me and the Beast Jesus, plundered of His human attractiveness and dignity; He offers me love and life. Do I want to be loved by someone so hide-ous and broken? Is this what God looks life? Will He be able to save me from my troubles. In order to experience real love, Belle had to look beyond the seeming ugliness of the Beast. Put yourself in her place as you stand before the cross on Good Friday. What does Jesus want to hear from you? Father Bob Grib, S.J. RCIA - “Will you let me be your servant, Let me be as Christ to you; Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too”

Worship & Spiritual Life

Irish Family Mass On March 16th, we celebrated our 20th Annual Irish Family Mass at St. Juliana Parish. A highlight of the Mass each year is the presentation of the "Donald J. Ahearn Humanitarian Award." This award is given each year to a person/persons who share the traditions and values given to him/her by his/her par-ents and grandparents - values that he/she continues to share with everyone he/she meets in life. Two awards were given this year. The very deserving recipients were: John & Sally Moriarty and Deacon Bob Ryan. We congratulate them and thank them for all they do for St. Juliana Parish. The monetary Offertory collection was given to the St. Juliana School Fund in the name of Msgr. Ken Velo. Many thanks to all those who planned & attended the Mass and Reception.

PASSION The contrast between the processional reading in today’s liturgy and the procla-mation of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One Who Is to Come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you want to know about the Blacktop Ball!

Dear Blacktop Ball I received my invitation in the mail, and have a question about "reserved ta-bles". If I don't reserve a table, will I have to stand all night?

Anita Chair Dear Anita: A variety of seating options will be available to you at the Blacktop Ball. Reserv-ing a table is perfect for those who wish to be seated with friends or family. These large round tables of 10 will be held in your party's name. In addition there will be tables accommodating parties of 8 and 6 -- these will be open seat-ing, available on a first-come, first-served basis. We will also have several highboy tables throughout the tent. We will adjust the number of tables as responses come in so that we can ensure the best mix of seating. We hope that all the guests will spend time walking around the auction tables, socializing with fellow parishioners, and dancing! If you plan to attend the event, please send your response card to the parish office. The sooner we finalize the guest list for the evening, the sooner we'll be able to finalize our table layout and seating arrangements.

Registration for

New Students

Registration for new school families is currently taking place. Saint Juliana School offers a full-day and half-day Kindergarten program for the 2009/2010 school year. Enroll-ment numbers will determine whether the half-day students are in a self-contained classroom or in-cluded in a full-day classroom. The Preschool Program offers classes five days a week from 8:15 – 10:45 A.M. for three and four year old children. There is also a three day program, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for three year olds. For an additional fee, students in the three-year-old and four-year-old pro-grams can stay for the Preschool Day Care program until 2:50 P.M. Please visit our school website, www.stjuliana.org/school, for more information. The Catholic community of Saint Juliana School is dedicated to pro-moting the spiritual, emotional, physical, and social development of each student in an educational set-ting which fosters Christian values of peace, justice, and concern for oth-ers as found in the Gospels.
