EPISTLE (ACTS 6: 1-7)

At that time, as the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, 4whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Par-menas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

GOSPEL OF THE MYRRH-BEARING WOMEN (MARK 15:43-16:8)

Joseph of Arimathea, a distinguished member of the council, who was himself awaiting the king-dom of God, came and courageously went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate was amazed that he was already dead. He summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had already died. And when he learned of it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. Having bought a linen cloth, he took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb. Mary Magda-lene and Mary the mother of Joses watched where he was laid.

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go and anoint him. Very early when the sun had risen, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb. They were saying to one another, “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back; it was very large. 5On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed. He said to them, “Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold, the place where they laid him. But go and tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you. Then they went out and fled from the tomb, seized with trembling and bewilderment. They said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

We’re all in this together: 2019 EPARCHIAL APPEAL

The 2019 Appeal for the Eparchy of Phoenix has begun, and by now you all have received your pledge forms and information about the various options for donating: cash, checks, credit cards and online donations. We are asking each household to donate $300.00, but of course larger amounts are welcome. Your generosity to the Eparchial Appeal not only helps to solidify us as a parish, but also as an eparchy. Much can be accomplished by our Eparchy of Phoenix because of your generosity and commitment to this annual appeal. Our parish goal is $35,475.00, and thus far we have received $23,502.00 in contributions – this is 58.00% of our goal to date.
