Sunday of Service SUNDAY OF SERVICE September 29, 2013 - What is Sunday of Service? It is an opportunity to "walk the walk," leading the life of service to others to which scripture calls us.Toward that goal, we make a special push to get everyone involved in a service project of one kind or another on this day. On September 29, the fourth annual Sunday of Service, our worship services will be 30 minutes each. Then, there will be a wide array of projects going on both within these walls and out in the community. This brochure details the various opportunities available that day for children and adults. SUNDAY OF SERVICE

September 29, 2013 - What is Sunday of Service? It is an opportunity to "walk the walk," leading the life of service to others to which scripture calls us.  Toward that goal, we make a special push to get everyone involved in a service project of one kind or another on this day.

On September 29, the fourth annual Sunday of Service, our worship services will be 30 minutes each. Then, there will be a wide array of projects going on both within these walls and out in the community.

SERVICE PROJECTSThe following is a list of Sunday of Service projects. To find out more about any project, such as resources needed or available, please contact the project supervisor indicated.

MINISTRY WITHIN OUR WALLS

BAKING FAIR TRADE COOKIES (OPEN) - KitchenJoin the SOWers, who will be baking Fair Trade cookies in the kitchen, to be delivered to local police and fire stations as a “thank you!” to those who serve. 15 volunteers are needed to bake (kitchen @ 10:00); 2 volunteers are needed to package (kitchen @ 1:00); 8-12 volunteers are needed to distribute (pickup from kitchen @ 2:00) Contact: Melanie Chaya

FEEDING OUR FRIENDS (OPEN) - Asbury HallThe Feeding Our Friends project consists of taking bulk quantities of beans and rice and dividing them into smaller bags that can be distributed by local food banks to individual families in need. Some will also be taken to Mexico by Jack Aulick. This project can be done by people of all ages in Asbury Hall after each worship service. Funded by Missions, and the Mead and Searchers classes. Contact: Roberta Birtchet

SHARE THE LOVE (OPEN) - KitchenShare the Love will begin in the kitchen after the 9:30 service. The flower and prayer ministry teams will have a flower with a verse attached to it ready to distribute. We need people to distribute the flowers to local nursing homes and designated senior living facilities. Delivering the flowers can be done shortly after worship or later in the afternoon. Contact: Beth Parnell

SCHOOL KITS FOR UMCOR (OPEN) - AsburyThe Explorers class is hosting the assembly of school kits for UMCOR, to be taken to the Sager

Brown depot when our mission team goes there in November. Assembly will take place after the 10:50 services. Contact: Mary Lynn Broyles 

REACH OUT & TOUCH SOMEONE (OPEN) - FCIn Founders Court after each worship service, we will be writing letters of encouragement to Matzke Elementary School teachers and military personnel. Led by Patty Beatty, Janet Epresi, and Mary Cooley, all are welcome to drop in and drop a line.

PRAYERS AND SQUARES (OPEN) - CommonsPrayers and Squares will be preparing goodie boxes for our military members on active duty. Stop by the Commons after the 9:30 worship service to help assemble the boxes, or to sew a quilt.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN (OPEN) - E118Our United Methodist Women are sponsoring three consecutive projects in room E118 (toward children’s wing) after the 9:30 worship service. 1 - Help show that Matzke Matters by assisting in the preparation of goodie bags for the teachers and other adult personnel at the school.2 - In Totes for Tots, another Matzke Elementary project, you can help assemble tote bags filled with school supplies, to be given to incoming students whose families are unable to provide them.3 - The final UMW project, Healthy Hugs, will involve the assembly of UMCOR health kits, to be taken to the Sager Brown depot by our mission team. These simple kits are distributed to victims of natural disasters as well as others, to help provide for basic sanitary needs.

REACH OUT (OPEN TO CHILDREN) - Asbury HallREACHing Out to REACH Unlimited, a local group home that serves mentally-challenged adults. This project is sponsored by Children’s Ministries in Asbury Hall after each worship service, where children are invited to create placemats and napkin rings for an upcoming party for the residents. Contact Peggy Launikitis.

SUNNY MORNINGS (OPEN) - E205You can help the children residing at Boys and Girls Country “start their day off right” by donating non-perishable breakfast cereal to this project, sponsored by the Family Matters class. Contributions may be left in their classroom, which is E205 (upstairs in the Children’s Wing).

MANNA BAGS (YOUTH ONLY) - The LoftOur Sixth Grade Surge will be preparing manna bags, which is a gallon bag filled with items to hand out to the homeless. Students will meet in the Loft 10:00 - 10:50 am. The bags will be available to purchase later for a small donation.

MINISTRY OUTSIDE OUR WALLS

THE BEACON (FULL) A team of 20 people will be going to The Beacon, a day center for the homeless.  There they will prepare and serve lunch, and do laundry for the center’s clients. This project is sponsored by the Horizons and Discovery classes. 

GREEN THE GARDEN AT YWAM (FULL)Members of the Horizons class will also be trekking off to Tyler to help Green the Garden at the Youth With a Mission campus. They will be working on a new rainwater catchment area and compost area, along with helping to plant the fall garden. 

GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE (OPEN) Give the Gift of Life by donating blood, which you can do at the Blood Center located at 6935 FM 1960 Rd W, (281-440-5900), open on Sundays until 4:00 pm. If you gave at our last Blood Drive in July, sufficient time has passed for you to donate again. Limited to adults 18+ (17 with parental permission). 

PARTY IN THE PARK (OPEN TO FAMILIES)Join the Pathfinders and Visions classes as they host a Party in the Park from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm for about 200 people in a mostly Latino neighborhood near the ship channel. There will

be a block party with piñatas and other fun. This group will meet at 10:00 am at the Walgreens door to head out. The Alito Rodriguez Park is located at 7927 Flaxman, Houston, 77029. Contact: Jonathan Barnett

SING OUT (OPEN)Join the choir as they Sing Out, heading out to several local nursing homes to bring a little singing into the residents’ day. Led by Greg Gathright. Meet in the choir room immediately after the 9:30 am worship service.

HONEY-DO (OPEN)For the Honey-Do project, please meet at the Walgreens entrance after the 9:30 am service. Contact: Beth Parnell 

LIFE CENTER FOR THE HOMELESS (YOUTH ONLY) 7th and 8th grade youth will be heading to the Life Center for the Homeless to do some carpet cleaning and painting in their worship center. Meet at the Jones Rd entrance at 2:00 pm, returning around 6:00 pm. Please bring money for dinner on the way home.  

WITHOUT WALLS (YOUTH ONLY)Our senior high students and the Family Matters class will be heading downtown in support of our Without Walls ministry to the homeless. They will be taking hygiene items to distribute, and will spend time in prayer and communion with the homeless community around Loaves and Fishes. Meet in the Cafe’ following the 10:50 am service, and bring money for a quick lunch on the way.
