Sunday of Divine Mercy
Page 2 Saint John the Evangelist From the Pastor April 28, 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, A most blessed and happy Easter to all of you! Today we celebrate the 8th day of Easter as we commemorate the great Mercy of God. We keep in our prayers those who received their sacraments for the first time last week at the Easter Vigil and we also pray for those children who are going to receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion at the 10:30 am Mass today. Let me tell you that the Angels and Saints rejoice when men, women, and children are added to Christ's Mystical Body, the Church. I would also like to extend an invitation to you to join us at 3:00 pm today (Sunday) for our celebration of Divine Mercy. We will have Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacra-ment and will pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy as we recall all that Christ has done, is doing, and will continue to do for our salvation. The celebration of Divine Mercy will close with a solemn benediction after the Chaplet is completed. The celebration serves as an awesome reminder that God's mercy is greater than our sins. Nothing and no one, save each of us, can stand between us and love of God. Call to mind the words of Saint Paul: Who then shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation? Or distress? Or famine? Or nakedness? Or danger? Or persecution? Or the sword? But in all these things we overcome, because of him that hath loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principali-ties, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor might, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8: 35-39. I hope to see you there. Finally, at the request of several parishioners, we will be offering the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (TLM) on the first Saturday of May (4) at 8:00 am. The Mass will be celebrated according the 1962 Missal. If you have never seen the older rite of the celebration of Mass I would like to invite you to attend the Mass. It is a bit different from the way we offer Mass today and here are a few of the differences. Priest and people face the altar of sacrifice during the majority of the Mass. Many of the prayers are said in a low, quiet voice, allowing more time for silent meditation. The language used at the Mass is the Church's official lan-guage, Latin. Also, Holy Communion is received only on the tongue whilst kneeling. Why offer the Traditional Mass? As Pope Benedict states there is, or ought to be, continuity in the Church throughout the ages. I believe it important to acknowledge and become aware of the fullness of our Christian roots. As so many people today are sending in their DNA to have it analyzed to discover their roots, so in a spiritual sense, of-fering the Traditional Latin Mass on occasion may help us to redis-cover our roots as Catholic Faithful. This form of the Mass has been in use in one form or another since about the year 190 AD. The Mass that we will celebrate was codified and used officially since the year 1570 AD and is called "The Tridentine Mass". Pretty amazing when one thinks about the Mass' history! Handouts will be made available so that all who attend can follow along.

Capital Campaign-Why is it so important that I pledge?
Making a pledge to St. John's capital campaign allows us to forecast income/expenses and begin construction projects without becom-ing over-exposed to debt. Pledges also allow us to pool our resources in larger and more powerful way to impact large building projects and renovations on our campus. While donations are always appreciated, what we need now are pledges. Hundreds of families pledging to give a constant amount every month allows us to fund the neces-sary costs for architects, engineers, contractors and equipment. Fi-nally, "capital campaign pledges" are separate from "building fund donations". Donations to the building fund help offset maintenance costs and upkeep to our facilities, while capital campaign pledges raise millions of dollars and allow for the building and investment of new assets on our parish campus. During a capital campaign, pledges are the only way to impact the success of our building projects. Please turn in a pledge envelope with a monthly amount over 40, 50, or 60 months to ensure our multi-million building projects can be completed. "Building funds" raise thousands of dollars for maintenance; "Capital Campaign Pledges" raise millions for future development, expansion and growth.
