The city was selected by the European Union for a period of one calendar year, during which it organizes a series of cultural events with a strong European dimension. There will be many cultural events in the first half of September. That means Wroclaw can be a good mixture of high-level bridge and a holiday. The magnificent Centennial Hall, located inside a nice park, will be a comfortable venue for players and the staff. The best way to reach Wroclaw is to fly to Warsaw or to Germany. From Frankfurt, Munich, (as well as from Warsaw), it is one-hour flight. The alternative is to fly to Berlin and rent a car. It is a drive of about three and a half hours. JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSPairs vs. teams

By Brent Manley

Some years ago, Carolyn Eckert of Alpharetta GA was teaching her favorite game to a group of beginners. During a practice session, she was called to a table of beginners. When she arrived, she saw eight green pass cards on the table, two in front of each player. One of the players said: “Mrs. Eckert, we passed this hand out two times. What do we do next?”

New players often have questions about the differences between pairs and teams. The two forms of scoring have major differences.

Starting with pairs, when you enter such a game, it’s just you and your partner against the world, so to speak, the “world” being the field in which you are playing.

Say you have entered a game with 26 tables – two 13-table sections. You buy an entry and find yourself sitting East-West at table 1. You will play round one against North-South pair 1, then move to the next higher table for round 2. You will continue to move higher while the boards you play will go to the next-lower table after you have finished with them. Pairs get “older” and the boards get “younger.”

You may have played some rubber bridge before you became a tournament player. If so, you know a bit about bridge scoring – what it takes for game, etc., above- and below-the-line scores. Forget about all that. In a duplicate pairs game, you are competing for “matchpoints.” You earn them by scoring better on a board than other pairs playing your direction. Here’s how it works: For every pair you beat, you get one matchpoint. If you are playing in a 13-table game, there will be 12 comparisons, so the maximum you can achieve on any board is 12. For each tie – the same score as another pair – you get half of a matchpoint.

Sometimes, the directors will score the game “across the field,” which means you will get matchpoints from your own section and from the other sections. In a game with two 13-table sections, you will have 25 comparisons and a chance for 25 matchpoints on each board.

So long as you have a better score than a pair

playing your direction – other East-West pairs – it doesn’t matter how much you beat them by. You get the same matchpoints by beating pairs by 10 points as you would if you beat them by 1000.

Note that your true opponents in the pairs event are not North and South, your face-to-face opponents. It’s the other East-West pairs you are concerned about.

In pairs, you may be willing to risk your contract to achieve an overtrick because if everyone sitting your direction is scoring plus 420 for making 4♠, you can scoop up all the matchpoints by making 11 tricks for plus 450.

At this point in your bridge development, don’t worry about overtricks. Focus first on making your contract. That alone should be worth lots of matchpoints.

In a team game, scoring is considerably different. A making, non-vulnerable 4♠ is still worth plus 420, but instead of competing against the “field,” your only worry is what happened at the other table.

In teams, you and your partner join another pair to make a team. Your entry directs you to a “home table” where all four of you sit before the game starts. Say it is table 1A. When the event starts, your East-West pair go to 1B. The opponents’ East-West pair arrive at your table. Depending on the size of the event, you play six to nine boards, keeping score as you go. Caddies move the boards between tables 1A and 1B as they are played. When the round is finished, the East-West opponents leave your table and your teammates return for a comparison.

You will use the International Matchpoint (IMP) scale to determine the outcome. For example, if the East-West pair at your table bid 4♠ but went down one for minus 50 and your

teammates reached the same contract but made it, their score of plus 420 is added to your plus 50 for a net plus 470. The IMP scale says your team gets 10 IMPs. You figure the IMP scores on all the boards you played and if your side is plus by even 1 IMP, you win. Your team captain turns in the result and you wait for the next match. The IMPs are converted to victory points (see the inside of your convention card for conversions). You will be matched against a team with a record similar to yours.

Take all your chances at bridge - 3By Eddie Kantar

♠ K 8 6 4 ♥ K 8 7 ♦ 9 8 ♣ K 10 3 2

♠ A Q 10 9 3 2 ♥ 6 3 2 ♦ K ♣ A Q 7

After you open 1♠, a simple limit-raise sequence lands you in 4♠. West leads the ♦Q. East wins the ace and returns the suit. Plan the play.

SolutionAfter ruffing the diamond return and drawing

trumps, you have a 100% play. Did you spot it? It

illustrates a theme entitled the safety-play finesse. Cash the ♣A and ♣Q and lead a low club towards

dummy’s K-10. If West shows out, rise with the king and play the ♣10, giving up the lead to East as you discard a heart. What can East do? If East leads a heart, the most you can lose is one heart trick (one of your hearts goes on the ♣K). If East leads a diamond, giving you a ruff and discard, you know what to do. Discard a heart from your hand, the shorter heart hand, and ruff in dummy. With one heart remaining in your hand the most you can lose is one heart trick. You wind up losing a club, a diamond and a heart.

If West follows to the third club, stick in the 10. If it wins, discard a heart on the ♣K and lead up to the ♥K for an overtrick. If the finesse loses to the jack with East, East is faced with a choice of evils: leading a heart up to dummy’s king or giving you a trick-costing ruff and discard. You can’t lose this contract regardless of who has the ♣J as long as you take a safety-play finesse. The full deal:

♠ K 8 6 4 ♥ K 8 7 ♦ 9 8 ♣ K 10 3 2 ♠ 5 ♠ J 7 ♥ Q 10 9 5 ♥ A J 4 ♦ Q J 10 4 ♦ A 7 6 5 3 2 ♣ J 9 6 4 ♣ 8 5 ♠ A Q 10 9 3 2 ♥ 6 3 2 ♦ K ♣ A Q 7

If you don’t play the ♣10 on the third round of the suit, you will go down on this layout. You will have to lead up to the ♥K, losing three tricks in the suit.

Marsha May Sternberg Women’s BAM

Play in the Marsha May Sternberg Women’s Board-a-Match Teams gets underway today, with two qualifying sessions followed by two final sessions tomorrow.

At stake: the Marsha Sternberg Memorial Trophy, honoring the player who died in 2001 after a six-week battle with cancer.

Her husband, Dr. Jim Sternberg of West Palm Beach FL, donated the trophy.

Marsha Sternberg was a former National Enquirer associate editor and the first female writer for the tabloid. Sternberg, once reported to be the highest paid female journalist in America, left the Enquirer in 1989 and married Sternberg, a radiologist and bridge enthusiast. She joined ACBL in 1990 and became a Life Master in 1997.

Sternberg was outstanding in many fields -- she was an excellent pianist and a sailing instructor. She was also very successful in golf and tennis.

Event historyPreviously this event was contested for the Coffin

Trophy, one of the oldest and most historic trophies in NABC competition. For years there was only one “national” women’s team championship -- and that was a board-a-match event.

Donated by Charles Emmet Coffin in 1933, the trophy was in play at the “Winter Nationals” in the days when there were only two NABCs — summer and winter. In 1963, the event was moved to the new Spring NABC where it was in play until the format was changed to knockout teams in 1976.

For the next decade, there was no national Women’s Board-a-Match championship. Swiss teams had become popular and a Women’s Swiss with NABC+ rating was established in the early 1980s.

The Coffin Trophy was revived at the Fall NABC in Atlanta in 1986 and new life was breathed into women’s board-a-match play.

Many experts consider board-a-match the most exacting form of the game. Equal weight is accorded each deal and every trick is important when scoring is board-by-board.

Winners and runners-up:1986 1. Lisa Berkowitz, Dorothy Truscott, Joyce

What might have beenOn this deal from the Educational Foundation

Pairs, a defender made a rather spectacular discard. Declarer (North) was Robert Hartman, CEO of the ACBL. His partner was Shane Garner.

Dlr: South ♠ A 2 Vul: Both ♥ Q 3 ♦ 6 2 ♣ K Q J 7 5 4 3 ♠ K J ♠ 10 8 6 5 4 3 ♥ A 9 4 2 ♥ 10 8 6 ♦ 10 7 5 4 3 ♦ K Q J ♣ 10 6 ♣ 2 ♠ Q 9 7 ♥ K J 7 5 ♦ A 9 8 ♣ A 9 8 West North East South 1♣ Pass 3NT All Pass

East started with the ♦K, ducked by Hartman. With a look at all four hands, Hartman would have taken the ♦A at trick one or two and easily made 10 tricks by playing on hearts. The diamond blockage would keep East-West from taking more than two tricks in the suit.

After Hartman played low at trick one, East continued with the ♦Q, again ducked by declarer. At this point, East could have earned his side a good score by knocking out dummy’s ♦A.

That would have limited Hartman to nine tricks. If he tried for an overtrick by playing a heart, West could win the ace and defeat the contract with two diamond winners.

Instead of continuing diamonds, however, East switched to his club. Hartman won in hand and played the ♥Q, ducked by West.

With 10 tricks in the bag, Hartman decided to cash out. He played a club to dummy’s ace, cashed the ♦A, pitching a heart, and returned to hand to start running clubs. At about trick nine, West threw the ♥A, possession of which – along with the cashable diamonds – would have prevented the overtrick. Plus 630 was good for 71% for Hartman and Garner.

likely to be very busy. Information about the tournament and

accommodations is available at www.worldbridgegames2016.comThe last two years have been very good to PBU.

Yes, it is true. In 2015, we won the Bermuda Bowl and the bronze medal in the d’Orsi Senior Trophy. During the European Junior Team championship in Norway, Polish teams won gold medals in Juniors (up to 25 years old) and kids (up to 15) and silver in the girls’ event. Last year, Poland won the Rosenblum Cup in Sanya and the first world kids’ championship in Istanbul. In general, Polish teams have won medals during European/world championships, practically in all categories.

I have to mention the name of Michal Klukowski. He is now 19, so he is the youngest player in the history of bridge to win the Bermuda Bowl and the Rosenblum Cup. He is 19 and he has two gold medals of the world championships. I think his record seems to be unbeatable. What is more important is that he is still learning. He plays with our top player, Piotr Gawrys, and Michal is a diligent pupil. How do you account for the recent results of the Polish teams? Is there a Polish formula for developing players who can compete at the highest levels? In what way, if any, is the Polish government involved in this process?

The PBU starts promoting and teaching bridge usually in secondary school (gimnazjum), that is, at the age of 12. We have a broad group of qualified and dedicated bridge teachers who organize classes and lectures at schools. We try to show teenagers that bridge is a sport for everybody at every age.

We organize the Polish championships in the WBF age categories, starting with under 16. We usually have more than 100 participants in this event. The WBF has three age categories for Juniors:

under16, 21 and 26. In every category, we have two special coaches who choose the most talented players and train them in preparation for the European and world championships.

The training goes on via the Internet and in person during a sport camp where students have more than a week of special training sessions. They play, analyze the hands, make improvements in their systems with the help of our top players, and so on.

During the meetings we pay special attention to proper behavior and bridge ethics. The work of all captains of Junior teams is coordinated by the special committee of non-playing captains of all national teams. For example, Michal Klukowski is only 19 but it had been decided he would have been playing in Tromsoe in U26, and Michal was a key player in winning the gold medal for Poland.

What is more important, we also show that even if one does not become a world champion, bridge can help in everyday life. One can learn how to think, predict, imagine, collect information and analyze it. They also learn how to behave properly to partner and the opponents. A bonus is that our young players can meet good friends for life.

Our youth program is supported financially by the Ministry of Sport, and other sponsors (i.e., companies). The gold medalists from Tromsoe in the kids’ event (i.e., U16) had an hour-long meeting with officials of the Ministry of Education, who congratulated them for their success and also expressed their full support for the educational values of bridge. Before the Bermuda Bowl in Chennai, a few pairs (including one from Poland) were accused of cheating. It all started with statements by Boye Brogeland of Norway. What is the thinking of Polish bridge officials regarding this topic?

PBU is totally against any way of cheating but also we believe that all these matters should be decided according to the appropriate procedures. Therefore, the PBU would prefer to comment after results of the official investigations by the European Bridge League are made public.

club,” he says. “I love ‘em! They don’t care about cheating or what events are screened. They bring their lunch and support us by playing every day.”

A Platinum Life Master, Monzingo took up the game in college. “I watched bridge games in high school, but no one would invite me to play. It took me an extra year to graduate from North Texas State University because I couldn’t get out of the student union.” (Denton TX)

He describes the game back then as “horrible, horrible college bridge. I open 1NT, you bid your strongest suit; I bid 2NT, you bid your longest suit; I bid 3NT, you pass.”

From Denton, Monzingo moved to Dallas. His love of the game led him to Harry’s Bridge Club, where he was inspired by the likes of Oswald Jacoby and Dr. John Fisher. A career move took him to San Diego. “I was a Texan, but that was the best decision of my life. Bridge in Califonia was so magnificent. It was the era of Barry Crane. I played bridge round the clock.”

Monzingo has a daughter who lives in Florida, a son who lives in Texas and two grandsons who occasionally meet up with him at NABCs. None play bridge. Yet.

A natural-born storyteller, Monzingo ticks off a lifetime of colorful careers like he does his bridge jobs: Broadway press agent, producer, part of a touring magic show, a television entertainer/writer – his was one of the first shows on Cox Cable, boxing announcer, Bible salesman, publisher. His first love is writing. It was when he was booking entertainment for the City of San Diego State and publishing San Diego State University’s student newspaper that Monzingo was approached about producing the Contract Bridge Forum. That was nearly 35, never-missed-an-issue years ago.

“To overcome the high cost of publishing, an association of three districts – 17, 21 and 22 – came together,” he says. “We split a common ‘all section,’ then each district has its own section for unit reports. We reach 22,000 households.”

Rather than fading away with the advent of the Internet – a fate that has befallen hundreds of newspapers large and small – Monzingo and staff continued to build the Forum and entered the world of online publishing. They built the Contract Bridge Forum site (contractbridgeforum.com), where issues of the Forum dating back to 2009 are archived. They’ve also created websites for a number of districts.

Monzingo was instrumental in the development of the Western Conference STaCs. “We have three of them a year,” he says, “in May, August and December, and we get 24,000 tables,” he says proudly.

2014 Open BAM champs: Grzegorz Narkiewicz, Krzysztof Buras, captain Andrew Gromov, Michal Nowosadzki, Jacek Kalita and Aleksander Dubinin.

Mitchell Open BAM begins todayPlay begins today in the Mitchell Open Board-

a-Match Teams. Players will be competing for the Victor Mitchell Trophy, which honors one of bridge’s most colorful characters — a champion player, philosopher and mentor to the stars.

Mitchell, a Grand Life Master, won five North American championships including the Spingold in 1956 and 1959, the Life Master Men’s Pairs in 1962 and the Men’s Teams in 1962 and 1963. He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1988 and inducted into the Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

The gameThe Open Board-a-Match Teams is a four-session

event that consists of two qualifying and two final sessions. It was a men’s event until 1990 when it became an open event.

Perhaps the event’s high point occurred in 1977 when there were only three winners: Richard Doughty, Ron Smith and Lou Bluhm (plus these players eligible for session awards only: Bruce Ferguson, Sidney Lazard, Leslie West and Irv Kostal).

Lazard was supposed to play with Doughty but after a good first set, Lazard became ill and Kostal took his place for the evening session.

Lazard was better the next day and in his seat for the first final session. Suddenly he toppled over and a call went out for paramedics. They arrived quickly and rushed Lazard to a hospital.

Meanwhile, Doughty had to find another partner and Ferguson was pressed into service. Ferguson, whose team had not qualified the previous day, was technically ineligible but was allowed to play only in the afternoon.

In the evening, Doughty recruited West — his fourth partner in four sessions — and the team went on to victory by a margin of two full boards.

Routine . . . or not?By Barry Rigal

Dlr: North ♠ A 5 4 Vul: None ♥ K 9 6 5 3 ♦ A K ♣ 9 7 2 ♠ K 7 3 2 ♠ Q J 8 ♥ — ♥ J 10 4 2 ♦ Q 10 8 6 4 3 ♦ J 7 2 ♣ K Q 5 ♣ A J 6 ♠ 10 9 6 ♥ A Q 8 7 ♦ 9 5 ♣ 10 8 4 3

Some elements of routine pairs technique may seem too obvious for the Daily Bulletin, but you never know. The following deals are from the first session of the Nail Life Master Pairs.

At our table, a Bergen auction landed North-South in 3♥. After the lead of the ♠Q, declarer had no realistic chance to make, but when handling trumps, why not take just a little care?

Start with the ♥K. After all, if trumps are 3-1 or 2-2 it doesn’t matter which card you lead. If trumps are 4-0, you can pick up length only in the East hand, and even then only if you are careful.

The difference between down one and down two was a third of a board. These things add up!

Here’s another example of playing the percentages. We are all taught at our mother’s knee regarding finesses for the queen: “Eight ever, nine never.” When all things are equal, playing for the drop (“nine never”) has a very slight edge. The smallest nudge, however, can change the odds.

Dlr: North ♠ 9 4 2 Vul: E-W ♥ Q 9 5 2 ♦ Q 5 2 ♣ J 8 3 ♠ Q 10 ♠ A K J ♥ A 7 ♥ 10 3 ♦ A J 10 9 7 ♦ K 8 4 2 ♣ Q 10 7 6 ♣ A 9 5 4 ♠ 8 7 6 5 3 ♥ K J 8 6 4 ♦ 6 ♣ K 2

The field played in 3NT on this deal. This was the auction at our table. West North East South Pass 1NT 2♣ (1) 3NT All Pass

(1) MajorsAfter the heart lead, the logical assumption is that

South has nine or 10 major-suit cards, North seven or eight. Further, if North was 4-4 in the majors, he might have saved against 3NT. So North has one-third more minor-suit cards than his partner. Your interest, of course, is in the diamond suit – you must pick up the queen to make your contract.

Even if North has only one more vacant space in the minors, the odds shift to 50-50 that North has the ♦Q. With a three-card disparity, playing to West’s ♦K and finessing on the second round seems clear to me.

If the plays I’m writing about look routine to you, I apologize, but considering that my opponents didn’t find them, I’m guessing they may appear easier in print than at the table. Dlr: West ♠ A 3 Vul: Both ♥ J 5 3 ♦ K 5 4 ♣ A 9 8 6 2 ♠ 8 6 ♠ J 10 2 ♥ 10 9 ♥ K Q 7 6 ♦ Q J 8 3 ♦ 10 6 2 ♣ K Q J 5 3 ♣ 10 7 4 ♠ K Q 9 7 5 4 ♥ A 8 4 2 ♦ A 9 7 ♣ —

The field played 4♠ (everyone in our section got there). No surprise. Your whole energy as South should be focused on avoiding three heart losers. West leads the ♣K. Let’s say that, to protect against hostile spade breaks, you ruff trick one, play the ♠K, spade to the ace, ruff a club and cash the ♠Q.

Then you lead a low heart: 9, jack, queen. Back comes a diamond. You win with the ♦A to reach this position: ♠ — ♥ 5 3 ♦ K 5 ♣ A 9 ♠ — ♠ — ♥ 10 ♥ K 7 6 ♦ Q J 8 ♦ 10 6 ♣ Q J ♣ 10 ♠ 9 ♥ A 8 4 ♦ 9 7 ♣ —

Now when you cash the ♥A, the 10 appears. It costs nothing to cross to the ♦K, pitching a diamond on the ♣A, and lead a heart towards the 8. Bingo! You have plus 650 and a 65% result instead of 25%.

The ACBL Educational Foundation supports activities for the purpose of instructing bridge, to increase the enjoyment of playing and the number of players. The Foundation has nine members: three from the Board of Directors and six from the general bridge membership. Members are elected for three-year terms, with a two-term limit. The Foundation meets three times a year at each NABC to consider all grant applications.

The Educational Foundation is funded by voluntary contributions made when members join or renew their ACBL membership, through special games and events, and from individual donations. Donations are tax deductible.

During the past few years, the Educational Foundation has approved applications for a variety of bridge programs across the U.S. and Canada, including:
