This imagery is used to portray the love relationship Our Lord wants to have with us, His people, His flock. It was written at the time of the Babylonian exile when the people felt abandoned or condemned for their sinfulness. The loving shepherd image shows Gods love and concern for His people. It is an image of consolation and protection, the good are separated from the bad, like sheep from goats, yielding security. The shepherd theme continues in the Responsorial Psalm, the ever- popular twenty-third psalm, a hymn of trust in the Lords goodness and providence, especially in the face of danger (as was prayed by the young heroes of Flight 93 on 9/11/2001). In this Psalm we see God as the good shepherd who guides his flock through danger, leading us to restful waters, using His rod and staff to give us comfort and courage as we wander through darkness. By prodding us with His rod and staff, we feel His pres- ence with us, as He gently touches us. His gracious presence is so powerful that we feel safe even when eating in the presence of our enemies. By His death and resurrection, Jesus defeated death and gave us life. His resurrection is the first-fruitsof those who believe. In harvest, the first crops are usually the best tasting and a sign of better harvest to come. Jesus is that for us, the best and the promise that we too will rise from death. This is what we find in the Second Reading, this remembrance of Jesus, the new Adam, destroying the death brought into the world by Adams first sin. Thanks to Jesus, death no longer controls us, for we will rise again with Him. His beloved children will share in His reign and glory forever, where all sin, alienation and fear are defeated. In todays Gospel, the solemnity of Christ the King, we find Him seated on His throne, separating the good from the bad, as the good shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. If we treat others with charity, we will be welcomed into God s kingdom, if not, we will be kept out. It is here that we find a listing of many of the corporal works of mercy, a remind- er to help those in need. Real faith exhibits charity. If we love God, we also love His children, so we will love not just in word, but also in deed. In fact we should always be grateful to those to whom we show charity, for they give us the opportunity to express our love. Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Our King, Our Shepherd

In the First Reading, we find the image of the shepherd and his sheep. This imagery is used to portray the love relationship Our Lord wants to have with us, His people, His flock. It was written at the time of the Babylonian exile when the people felt abandoned or condemned for their sinfulness. The loving shepherd image shows God’s love and concern for His people. It is an image of consolation and protection, the good are separated from the bad, like sheep from goats, yielding security. The shepherd theme continues in the Responsorial Psalm, the ever-popular twenty-third psalm, a hymn of trust in the Lord’s goodness and providence, especially in the face of danger (as was prayed by the young heroes of Flight 93 on 9/11/2001). In this Psalm we see God as the good shepherd who guides his flock through danger, leading us to restful waters, using His rod and staff to give us comfort and courage as we wander through darkness. By prodding us with His rod and staff, we feel His pres-ence with us, as He gently touches us. His gracious presence is so powerful that we feel safe even when eating in the presence of our enemies. By His death and resurrection, Jesus defeated death and gave us life. His resurrection is the “first-fruits” of those who believe. In harvest, the first crops are usually the best tasting and a sign of better harvest to come. Jesus is that for us, the best and the promise that we too will rise from death. This is what we find in the Second Reading, this remembrance of Jesus, the new Adam, destroying the death brought into the world by Adam’s first sin. Thanks to Jesus, death no longer controls us, for we will rise again with Him. His beloved children will share in His reign and glory forever, where all sin, alienation and fear are defeated. In today’s Gospel, the solemnity of Chr ist the King, we find Him seated on His throne, separating the good from the bad, as the good shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. If we treat others with charity, we will be welcomed into God’s kingdom, if not, we will be kept out. It is here that we find a listing of many of the corporal works of mercy, a remind-er to help those in need. Real faith exhibits charity. If we love God, we also love His children, so we will love not just in word, but also in deed. In fact we should always be grateful to those to whom we show charity, for they give us the opportunity to express our love.

The Recognition Prayer

Our Lord, Jesus Christ, son of the God, our King. I pray that you may help sanctify us and heal us with your love and compassion. We curse, sin, act faulty, and disobey your nat-ural law, but no matter what we do, you always show us more love and hope, so that we may be with you when our time comes. You never lose hope with us, you are like a parent to a lost child. I pray that you may help us stay on course with our hopes and our dreams, and that you may help us be more loving and compassionate to others like Jesus is. I pray that we can help others in times of sickness and suffering so that we may help their healing. I recognize that you only love us, I recognize that you are only testing us, and I recognize that you will always be there for us. Amen.

The Solemnity of Christ The King is a newer feast day that focuses on

the authority of Christ. Pope Pius XI was witness to a turbu-lent time in the world's history. The feast was a response to the rise of secularization, atheism, and communism. Secularism was on the rise and dangerous dictatorships were emerging in Europe and beyond. Christ had long been referred to as King, but Pope Pius and the Christian faithful saw the respect and reverence for Christ's authority waning in the midst of the unrest during the first part of the 20th century. In response, the feast was set with the intent to reaffirm and refocus faith and respect in the kingship of Jesus, it was to remind Catholics (and the world generally) that Jesus Christ is Lord of the Universe, both as God and as Man. Pope Pius XI announced the feast in his encyclical Quas Primas, which was delivered on December 11, 1925. Pope Pius XI was hoping for these effects to occur:

That nations would see that the Church has the right to freedom, and immunity from the state.

That leaders and nations would see that they are bound to give respect to Christ.

That the faithful would gain strength and courage from the celebration of the feast, as we are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies.

The feast was initially fixed to the final day of October, the day before All Saints Day. Later, in 1969, Pope Paul VI moved the feast to the last Sunday before Advent, to em-phasize the importance of the feast. This is fitting within the Church year. The liturgical year begins with Advent, the season of awaiting the coming of Christ, and now the year ends with celebrating the Kingship of Christ.

As our liturgical year comes to an end and we prepare for the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ in one month, during this sea-son of Advent let us call to mind the love our heavenly Father has for all of us and how He shows this love by the sharing of the greatest gift with us, his Son.

Prayer: Finding Intimacy with God

Though prayer is one of the essential of a thriving faith, we often feel as if we're talking to ourselves -- or, worse, as if we're talking to no one at all. Capture the secret to opening our hearts and minds to Scripture as the means to hear from God and then respond in sacred conversation. Series open to all parishioners. Contact Cynthia Mulcaire (985-7338) for more information.

St. John Notre Dame School Annual Fund 2017

Each year, our Annual Fund raises monies for the ever changing needs of providing a 21st Century Catholic edu-cation to our children. Tuition alone does not come close to covering this cost. Facilities need to be upgraded, new tech-nology is constantly needed to improve and drive instruction and our accomplished teaching faculty needs to be retained. None of this can be achieved without the financial support of our parents, grandparents, alumni and donors. Let's remember that "it is essential that every possible effort be made to ensure that Catholic schools, despite financial difficulties, continue to provide a quality authentic Catholic education for local com-munities." - Eccleisa in America §71 With your help, we can ensure that St. John Notre Dame School can meet the needs of St. John the Baptist Parish and the greater Folsom community today and tomorrow. We can only achieve this goal by work-ing and serving together. Please consider making a donation.

Spiritual Adoption Program - MONTH 8 Now your spiritually adopted baby is finished de-veloping and is concentrating on gaining weight; she might be making her mother uncomfortable with her size. She will need a layer of fat to help

her stay warm after she leaves the perfect temperature inside her mother’s womb. In a short time, this baby will be born. Your baby’s mother appreciated the prayers you have said for her and her baby throughout the pregnancy. It has not been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace she needed to bring her baby to term and the life God has planned for her.

BEFORE POSTING ANY FLIERS ON THE BULLETIN BOARD OR ANYWHERE IN THE CHURCH, PLEASE

HAVE IT APPROVED BY THE PARISH OFFICE. THANK YOU.
