The fruits of Holy Communion:

intimate union with Christ

The Catechism, section 1391, cites John 6:56 and 57 in

saying that not only does receiving Holy Communion

―augment‖ our union with the Lord, it emphasizes the

intimacy of the bond between the believer and Christ:

―Indeed, the Lord said: ‗He who eats my flesh and drinks my

blood abides in me, and I in him." (John 6:56) Life in Christ

has its foundation in the Eucharistic banquet: "As the living

Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who

eats me will live because of me.‘‖ (John 6:57)

SPOTLIGHT

Mary deBaca Bereavement Committee Chair

Whether you lose a loved one

unexpectedly or after a long illness, the

Bereavement Committee at St. Thomas Aquinas is on hand to

help you plan a vigil service and funeral mass. A member of the

committee meets with the family to help them select appropriate

readings and music, involve family members in the vigil and

Mass, and coordinate other aspects of the service. Another

committee serves lunch after funerals at STA

You may want to do some advance planning for your own final

arrangements or help an elderly parent with advance planning -

the Bereavement Committee can be of help to you.

On All Souls Day, the Bereavement Committee conducts a "Day

of Remembrance" service for those in our parish who have lost a

loved one during the past year. In addition, on the first Sunday

of each month after the 8:30 Mass, the committee offers "You

are Not Alone" for anyone who has suffered a loss - the loss of a

loved one, a loss through a miscarriage, or other losses for

which you feel grief. There are also material available in the

library dealing with loss.

Those on the Bereavement Committee include: Marcia

Clendenen, Robert Conzemius, Pam Rennie Curtis, Anne

Felker, Delma Kernan, Melissa Lord, Mary E. Schmeizer,

Robert Sill, Virginia Slater, Ann Stokka, Delphine Weiss,

Heather Will and Sister Lorraine Schmaltz.

IN THE DIOCESE

Keeping Silence

In the liturgy, we are silent, silent together. This is not an individ-

ual silence, even though each of us—as best as each of is able—is

quiet. This is not a passive silence, even though we try to be as

still as we can be. We are silent together, actively quiet, purposely

still. We‘re silent before the liturgy begins, in order to be present

to each other and thus find God. God is always present to us; we

forget that sometimes, fail to hear God amid our noisy living. So

before we wrestle with God in our rites, we are silent: Be still,

and know that I am God.

We are silent at the words ―Let us pray.‖ These words

begin the opening prayer and prayer after communion at Mass, as

well as the prayers after the psalms at morning and evening

prayer. At this invitation, we pray and we pray hard and we pray

hard together, so that when the priest speaks, all of our prayers are

drawn to those words like metal shavings to a magnet. One voice

breaks the silence with words of prayer, and one mighty voice,

spoken from all of our throats, seals that prayer: ―Amen!‖

We are silent after readings of scripture and after the

homily. How else can God speak to us? How else are we to hear

the divine voice, not only echoing from long ago in ancient words

brought back to life, but speaking now, in this time, in the quiet

that we provide here? After the readings and the homily, we are

silent together because we are listening together for the voice on

which our very lives depend, the voice that calls us into being, the

voice that bids us to come out of our dumb tombs to live and to

love again.

On occasion, instead of singing, we may be silent when

the gifts of money are gathered for the poor and for the church,

and when the gifts of bread and wine are brought to the altar. And

when all have been fed, when all have drank from the cup, again

we are silent, caught up in the revery of great mystery, standing

together wide-eyed and satisfied, breathing quiet gratitude for life

breaking out everywhere, enjoying the quiet of this moment be-

fore an eternal dawn, when God will be all in all and the final

silence will be ruptured with raucous, joyous cries of ―Worthy!

Worthy! Worthy!‖

The liturgy‘s silences both tax and nourish us. They tire

us because they are active moments, concentrated periods of de-

liberate, attentive, awe-filled stillness. But they nourish us as

well. They are vitamins for a life made anemic with noise, tonic

for the blathering (the world‘s and our own) that sometimes sick-

ens us. The moments of communal silence in the liturgy plant

seeds of peace in our souls, so that in the turmoil of every day life

we can find a still center inside and hear the voice of God.

We give thanks—

For those who served, and now are gone,

In the ―war to end all wars‖ a century ago.

Their service, and the eleventh hour truce

That passed for peace, forever hallowed this day

In the eleventh month of the year.

As generations after generation was called again

To give of themselves as those veterans did,

Whose comrades lay in fields where poppies bloom,

So now must we whom they protect, honor the

Fallen and remember the living who served so well

At their nation‘s call. We salute them, the living

And the dead, for their selfless service,

Protecting loved ones back home, even as they fight

In distant lands to protect freedom‘s light.

May our veterans know the peace that they desire.
