SPOTLIGHT

FASHION INCUBATOR FOR THE KINGDOMInterview with Jalila Aarab

Jalila Aarab, the Bahraini fashion designer who has over 25 years of experience in fashion design, merchandising, and development is the proprietor of Lilly and Jo and the Co-founder of Bahrain Fashion Incubator (BFI). BFI is the first business incubator and accelerator in the MENA region that provides creative professional solutions and services to fashion start-ups. Jalila Aarab, shares the visions of BFI, the relevance of fashion in the economy of the Kingdom as well as for the whole region and her experiences in the ever evolving fashion industry.

Tell us about Lamasat.Lamasat was about bringing back the tradition, the exclusivity, and the luxury without appearing conservative in the fashion scene.

What does Lilly and Jo mean to you?Lily stands for "Jalila", which represents the formal collection and Jo stands for "Jood", the name of my 11 year old daughter, representing the teen’s collection.

When and how did you decide to start Bahrain Fashion Incubator (BFI)?Realising the significant impact fashion has on the local economy as a driver for job creation, cultural growth, trade development, and tourism, the idea came about to have a place that used the resources and opportunities available in Bahrain to help aspiring local fashion designers build sustainable businesses that can compete in the global fashion industry.

Established in 2016, BFI is the first Business Incubator and accelerator in the MENA region that provides creative professional solutions and services to fashion start-ups. It’s the bridge between creative design and business enterprise.

What’s the relevance of Bahrain Fashion Incubator (BFI) to the Bahraini society? The Bahrain Fashion Incubator aims to help fashion entrepreneurs obtain a solid foundation to start brand names that will go global. We look to harness creativity of ideas, preserve cultural heritage, expose entrepreneurs to advancements in technology and business so that they can build businesses that will last and compete globally.

Which is your favourite role? Proprietor of Lily and Jo OR the CEO and Co- founder of Bahrain Fashion Incubator (BFI)?Both of them are my pride and each one of them has different meaning to me, but the BFI touched my heart more because it combines the fashion creation with the social impact.

How do you define fashion?Fashion is a form of expression without the use of words. To me, it's about authenticity, and originality with strong artistic content that is innovative and includes creative design.

How do you stay up to date regarding fashion? With the ever-changing developments in social media, the industry is more fast-paced than ever. The Trends are changing so rapidly. Back then, fashion would influence the streetwear. Nowadays, street trends are influencing fashion. Networking with industry professionals and keeping up to date with the latest trends is crucial.

What are your views on the MENA fashion? What is the position of Bahrain among them?We have a youthful population that craves individuality and being noticed. In recent years, our fashion sense has impacted western designer houses. We have great Arab designers that are global brands and are growing, so we have the creative pool to produce talent. Bahrain is the entrepreneurial hub in all respects. There are local talents that have gained international recognition, and we are looking to ensure that there are many more and that our experience can be emulated across the region.

Where do you derive your inspiration for the designs from?Inspiration doesn’t always just happen at the snap of a finger. I get inspired by common sources like travel, history, weather, media, streets, art, and nature.

What do you believe the ethic that a fashion designer should keep?Fashion itself is being redefined constantly. The advancement of technology, the impact of globalized economy, and young demographics are driving the change. Fashion today has to be sustainable and support authentic designs and craft skills. We can no longer afford to have waste.

There are numerous fixtures and features provided by manufacturers in vehicles to make it easy for the driver to navigate the roads without fear of getting involved in an accident. Many drivers do not make the optimum use of these fixtures out of laziness or ignorance which is a pity. A little attention to them and a driver’s life can be so much more easy.

For example it is essential for a driver to keep an eye on the movement of the traffic behind him to see who is approaching him at what speed, who wants to change the lane or overtake him, who is ‘blinking’ his headlights to ask him to get out of the way and so on. This is where the role of the mirrors in the car comes into the picture.

Thus, while it is necessary to focus on the road ahead, one should at regular intervals throw a glance at the rear-view mirror too, installed above the windscreen. A driver should therefore

make sure, when he starts his car, to adjust it to suit his convenience in terms of keeping an eye at the rear of the vehicle.

No less important is the role of side-view mirrors. These enable a driver to take a closer look at who is trying to overtake him and also enable him to avoid colliding with a vehicle when he himself is trying to make a left or right turn. But remember, even while using the side-view mirrors, a driver must turn his head to personally ensure there is no danger in the ‘blind area’ – the space between the rear-view mirror and the carboot – because a vehicle running parallel to a driver’s car can sometimes escape the view from the side-view mirrors.

One often notices on the road drivers turning to the left or the right without indicating their intent by way of signalling. This is bad manners. For example if you are about to leave the highway

to enter a right lane and do not give indicator, it forces the drivers emerging from that lane to join the highway to stop unnecessarily because in the absence of your indicator they will take it that you mean to go straight.

Therefore do give an indicator. Do not be lazy. It is only a matter of a flick of the finger on the indicator stick on your steering wheel and the life for other drives will be so much more easy.

Similarly, if you have to momentarily slow down due to some accident or sudden traffic jam ahead or even to drop a passenger without getting out yourself, then you must signify your intent by using the hazard lights. Otherwise if you slow down suddenly the vehicle behind you might plough into you. And if you stop in an area where no stopping of vehicles is allowed without the hazard lights, the vehicle behind you might hit you.

TEAM BAHRAIN WINS KEY AWARD FOR FINTECH INITIATIVES

Team Bahrain, represented by the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB), the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) and Bahrain Fintech Bay, has won a key award for its initiatives in the area of Financial Technology (Fintech).

The MENA Fintech Hub of the Year Award for Bahrain was conferred by Fintech Galaxy, a digital crowdfunding platform, in association with Entrepreneur Middle East, a flagship regional business magazine, during FinX 2018, a Fintech event held on 31 October 2018 in Dubai, UAE.

The MENA Fintech Hub of the Year Award recognizes excellence in creating an active and innovative fintech ecosystem.

The Award was conferred on Team Bahrain for its pioneering initiative in providing the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region with:• A Fintech hub which recognizes the joint effort between the regulators, banks, accelerators, and investors to create a cohesive ecosystem. • A regulatory environment that

promotes and encourages innovation in the region's financial system

The award was received on behalf of Team Bahrain by Mr. Rasheed Al Maraj, Governor of the Central Bank of Bahrain, during an awards ceremony held on the same day.

“We are delighted to receive this award, which is a demonstration of international recognition for the initiatives being undertaken by the Kingdom of Bahrain in Fintech. We believe that such initiatives celebrate the remarkable achievements by some of today’s catalysts for change in this progressive financial services sector, and we take pride in our Fintech ecosystem which is complemented by persistent efforts from the Bahrain Economic Development Board and Bahrain Fintech Bay.” said Mr. Rasheed Al Maraj, Governor of the Central Bank of Bahrain.

Recent initiatives by the CBB to foster innovation in the financial sector include the successful launch of the CBB’s Regulatory Sandbox in mid-2017, setting up a dedicated Fintech and Innovation Unit within the CBB, issuing regulations for Financing and Equity based Crowdfunding activities accommodating both conventional and Sharia-Compliant crowdfunding transactions, and facilitating Cloud Computing services for licensed

financial institutions. HE Khalid Al Rumaihi, Chief Executive

of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), said, “We are pleased that Bahrain has been recognised as the top FinTech Hub in the MENA region. The development of the FinTech ecosystem has been a top priority, and this builds upon Bahrain’s position as a leading and established financial services hub. This recognition is a strong endorsement of Bahrain’s commitment and efforts to introduce and improve both the regulatory framework and ecosystem needed to support the ambition of both our startups and existing companies.

With a dedicated FinTech unit, the Central Bank of Bahrain, shaped a pro-innovation regulatory framework, including the region’s only onshore Regulatory Sandbox, established last year, which became a test bed for FinTech startups. The collaborative approach between the government and private sector has been instrumental to the advancement of the FinTech growth and activities in Bahrain. Financial Services now accounts for around 17% of total GDP, and we are confident that the Kingdom will continue to strengthen its position as a FinTech leader, regionally and globally while preparing for a future in which technology is going be a game changer.”

INSIDE ARABIA

Anthems were sung, flags waved and crowds cheered as Dubai welcomed a new champion of the Arab Reading Challenge on Tuesday.

Moroccan Maryam Amjoun, 9, was announced the winner of the competition, which is largest Arab knowledge initiative in the world and is in its third year.

Over 10.5 million pupils from more than 52,000 schools in 44 countries took part. Maryam was presented her award – which includes a cash prize of Dh500,000 – by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice

President and Ruler of Dubai, at Dubai Opera.

Overwhelmed by the celebrations, Maryam burst into tears and Sheikh Mohammed used his ghutra to wipe them away.

"I say to the winners that they are the leaders of the future. With education and knowledge, a person can reach any goal. And we will see you next year [for next year's challenge]," Sheikh Mohammed told attendees at the ceremony.

The competition challenges participants,

between the ages of 8 and 18, to read a minimum of 50 Arabic books over the course of one academic year. They are then tested on their understanding of the texts during the contest.

Maryam’s father, Amjoun Lahsan, said that, for the past year, the family has sat together to read every day. Together, they would summarise, analyse and critique the literature they read.

“Maryam has big dreams and is very ambitious. Every time I told her you have a 99.9 per cent chance of winning, she

would get angry and say no it is a 100 per cent chance,” said Mr Lahsan.

“It is a great feeling when a figure like Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid bends down to wipe her tears and kiss her forehead. That’s a message to Maryam — it is a motive to continue reading and do what she is doing,” he said.

“She already knows her career path: she wants to be an architect. In the past year, she read many books and was introduced to Zaha Hadid, the famous architect."

RETHINKHEALTH

DO NOT SLEEP ON YOUR BEAUTY

There is truth behind the term "beauty rest"! While we sleep, our skin and bodies are actually in repair mode. Sleep deprivation can lead to a number of skin issues. Some show up immediately and others are the result of weeks, or even years, of inadequate sleep.

THE DOWNSIDE OF POOR SLEEPMost women know what to expect when they look in the mirror after a late night or early morning: dark circles, puffy eyes and a dull, washed out complexion. Luckily, these are usually temporary conditions and with a smart skincare regimen and some good rest your skin looks good as new again.

However, after weeks of sleep deprivation, you may start to see more fine lines, hyperpigmentation and saggy skin. Your skin is also more susceptible to moisture loss and may be slower to heal from sunburn.

STEPS TO BETTER SLEEPThese strategies can make it easier to fall asleep and improve the quality of your rest:• Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day. • Sleep in a dark, quiet room. • Keep your bedroom cool.• Skip the caffeine late in the day.• Avoid drinking too much alcohol.• Loosen up. If you have long hair, don’t go to bed with it in clips, elastics, or braids, which stress follicles and can make your hair thin.• Moisturize your feet or hands. • Wash your face before you hit the sheets. “Makeup and a day’s worth of debris from pollution, smoke, and the environment can cause acne breakouts.

• Don’t forget to remove eye makeup, since mascara, eye pencil, and eye shadow can flake into your eyes while you sleep, causing irritation or infection.

4 BEAUTY BENEFITS FROM SOLID NIGHTS OF SHUT-EYE. 1. YOU CAN LOOK YOUNGER Sleep can’t magically erase deep wrinkles, but it can slow down your skin’s aging process. The deepest stages of sleep are when your body produces the most growth hormone, which aids in cell and tissue repair.. 2. FEWER FINE LINES AND DARK CIRCLES Your body rehydrates while you sleep. That makes fine lines and wrinkles less visible and gives your skin a healthy glow. 3. PROBLEMS IMPROVE If you have a condition like eczema, acne, or rosacea, plenty of shut-eye may help. 4. BETTER HEALTH Throughout the day, your skin takes a hit from stressors like pollution and ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. When you sleep, your skin has time to mend itself.

So, do not sleep on your beauty! The next time you want to skimp on getting your zzz’s, remember that sleep is actually one of the most important steps in your skincare regimen and key to a healthier, younger looking complexion.

POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a genetic disorder condition that affects the kidneys. When people have PKD, abnormal fluid-filled sacs called "cysts" grow in the kidneys. The cysts cause the kidneys to get bigger than normal. The cysts can also keep the kidneys from working normally. This can lead to problems, such as high blood pressure, kidney infections, and kidney failure. Kidney failure is when the kidneys stop working completely. Besides kidney problems, PKD can cause problems in other parts of the body like liver cysts, hernia etc. PKD usually runs

in families. Some people with PKD have no symptoms. When people do have symptoms, they can have, pain in the lower half of the back or on the side or in the belly, blood in the urine, Kidney stones, which can cause belly or side pain, or blood in the urine.

An ultrasound, CT, or MRI scan can find out if you have PKD. Blood tests can be done to check for the abnormal genes that cause the disease. Main goal of treatment is to control pain, to treat kidney infection and control high blood pressure with lifestyle changes, diet changes, and

medicines. Treating high blood pressure can help the kidneys stay healthy for a longer time.

If your kidneys stop working completely, you will need treatment that takes over the job of your kidneys, either Dialysis or Kidney transplant. If you have PKD, your adult family members should talk with their doctor about getting tested for it.

Doctors do not usually recommend that children get tested unless they have symptoms. But children should see their doctor or nurse every year to have their blood pressure checked.

Neti is one of the shatkriyas or cleansing technique in Yogic practice, to make the human body strong and healthy. Jala Neti and Sutra Neti are the two common forms of Neti practices.

Jala NetiJala Neti is the procedure of cleaning the nasal by taking a small pot called Neti pot which hasa long spout on one end and is filled with warm saline water.

-Then the spout is filled in the left nostril.-The person practicing it tilts his head to the right side and allows the water from the left nostril into the nasal cavity, which then releases out from the right nostril. -Again the pot is filled with the saline water and the procedure is repeated by putting the spout in the right nostril and then tilting the head towards the left side.

This procedure cleans the sinus cavities and the nose.

Hence it helps in relieving sinusitis, allergies, migraine and mild headaches.

Sutra NetiSutra Neti is also a technique for cleaning the nasal passages by using a rubber catheter [sutra].

-In this the catheter is put into one nostril and then pulled out from the throat and also the mouth.

- The nostril passage is cleaned by usinga gentle motion of to and fro of the catheter tube. Same is repeated with the other nostril.

Benefits1. Both Neti Kriyas desensitize the membranes in the nose, hence relieve allergic rhinitis, allergies etc. 2. Also Neti stimulates few nerve centers in the upper nasal passage.

Neti Kriya should be performed after pranayama practice and should be followed by kapalabhati so that there is no remnants of saline water in the cavities.

Why do we cry when we chop onions?Ever cut an onion and started tearing up? Most people do. It turns out when you cut an onion, it releases a gas called, ready for this, Propanethiol S-oxide. When mixed with certain enzymes in the onion, it creates a sulfur gas. These gases then get to your eyes and create a mild acid which irritates the eyes.

Normally, your body would signal you to close your eyes. This, of course, is not a good idea if you are cutting an onion. The next best thing your eyes can do is to make tears to protect the eyes. Rubbing your eyes is a bad idea, since your hands are likely full of the tear making onion juice.

"BTW FOOD MATTERS"

Walnuts are the oldest known tree food — they date all the way back to 10,000 BC.

The shell of the cashew is toxic and can’t be eaten. Cashews are in the same plant family as poison ivy and

poison sumac and their itchy oil is primarily contained in their shell.

Pistachio is known as the “smiling nut” in Iran and the “happy nut” in China.

Macadamia nuts are never picked. They are harvested from the ground after they fall off the tree. They also have the hardest shell of any nut, taking 300 PSI of

pressure to crack it open.

The only thing is, peanuts aren’t actually nuts – they’re legumes.

Ancient Greeks believed hazelnuts could treat coughing and baldness.

Almonds have a long storage life and can be refrigerated for up to 2 years. The longer shelf life is due to the fact

that they are rich in Vitamin E.

Pistachios are actually seeds of a grape-like fruit.

Cashews are actually fruit, too.

Chestnuts contain vitamin C (around 20%).

VIVA, THE FIRST TELECOM OPERATOR IN BAHRAIN TOINTRODUCE THE REVOLUTIONARY ESIM TECHNOLOGY

TENCENT MADE SMART GLASSES THAT LOOK LIKE SNAP SPECTACLES

VIVA Bahrain, the Kingdom’s leading telecom operator, announced the launch of the revolutionary eSIM technology, available for the first time in Bahrain. VIVA’s innovative eSIM service offers flexibility and convenience by enabling customers to use both SIM card slots available in their Apple devices, such as iPhone Xs, Xs Max or Xr.

VIVA subscribers can seamlessly switch between multiple lines without the need for a physical SIM. Additionally, for those who wish to continue the use of their physical SIM, they can still use it in conjunction with the eSIM technology and thus have two lines active on their phone.

All VIVA post-paid and pre-paid subscribers using the iPhone Xs, Xs Max or Xr devices can take advantage of the new service instantly. Customers who are interested in activating an eSIM can visit any of the 19 VIVA retail stores for assistance with the installation of the eSIM add-on.

VIVA chief commercial officer, Karim Tabbouche said, “We are pleased to be the first to introduce the eSIM technology in Bahrain, which will simplify the mobile experience for our VIVA customers. This is a great example of our dedication to always be pioneers in telecom and digital innovation within the Kingdom”

Tencent, China’s biggest tech company, has made its own pair of video-recording sunglasses this week that bear a slight resemblance to Snap’s Spectacles. The Weishi smart glasses have a camera on the front, like Spectacles, so you can record video.

Unlike the first generation Spectacles, the Weishi glasses don’t highlight the camera with an ugly yellow ring. Instead, they’re all black, with a subtle cat eye, more like the second generation of Spectacles.

Tencent’s Weishi glasses, which mean “micro shows” in Mandarin, have the same name as the company’s Vine-like video app that it has been pushing. Tencent’s Weishi currently lags behind TikTok (formerly Musical.ly), which dominates the Chinese short video

market right now and is seeing massive global success as well. The idea behind the glasses’ release is likely for users to record more short videos to upload to Weishi, to hopefully boost the platform’s popularity.

Currently, Tencent remains Snap’s largest investor, with a 17 percent share in the company. The Chinese conglomerate is most famous for its WeChat app that doubles up as a messaging and payments app, but it also has multiple investments. In the video games industry, Tencent fully owns Riot Games, which makes the game League of Legends.

The Weishi glasses will be available on November 11th, which is Alibaba’s Singles Day, a large shopping event that sold more units than Black Friday or Cyber Monday last year.

Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) secretary general Abdulrahman Askar, who met members of the team at the committee premises in Seef said he was pleased with the overall result of the

He conveyed the congratulations of Shaikh Nasser to the team, praising their respective results, which reflects the improved level of triathlon in Bahrain and the attention paid to the activities organized by the national triathlon federation.

Askar also noted the efforts of federation president Shaikh Saqer bin Salman Al Khalifa and his support to the team to prepare them for the championship.
