PASTOR’S PARISHABLES

For Mothers Day, for many, there will be cards &

flowers, a special meal & maybe a trip home & even a

trip to the cemetery. Every Easter-time we have this day

set aside to honor our mothers. This is fitting. The love

we have for our mothers & the love mothers have for

their children are ways we experience God's love. That’s

why we sometimes call the Church our mother: We’re

born from her womb at baptism, raised in her family, &

nourished at her table in the Eucharist.

The prayer of Jesus we hear this Sunday, coinciding

with Mother’s Day, seems custom made. (Actually, it

took a slight manipulation, moving Christ’s Ascension

from this Sunday to last Sunday, leaving this 7th Sunday

of Easter intact, with its prayer that mothers could make

their own: "O Father most holy, protect them. As long as

I was with them, I guarded them. I kept careful watch. I

do not ask you to take them out of the world, but to guard

them from evil." (That's from John 17:11-15, mothers;

take it with you & memorize it! It's your prayer too.)

“He descended into hell.” We’ve said that in the Apos-

tles’ Creed for centuries. (However, between about 1970,

when the 1st translation of the Mass in English came out,

& 2011, when a new & more literal English translation

replaced it, we said—at least at Mass, “He descended to

the dead.”) Last Sunday, observing the Ascension here in

our parishes, it seemed opportune to look into what we

profess when we say that. Jesus descended into hell.

Actually, the Nicene Creed, used most commonly at

Mass, doesn’t mention his “descension” before his

resurrection & ascension. It simply says, “He suffered

death & was buried, & rose again on the 3rd

day…. He

ascended into heaven….”

Christ “sojourned” among the dead, we believe, when

we say “he died.” That’s the word used by the Catholic

Catechism, “The frequent New Testament affirmations

that Jesus was ‘raised from the dead’ presuppose that the

crucified one sojourned in the realm of the dead prior to

his resurrection.” (That’s a formal way of saying what I

referred to, gingerly, last Sunday when I mentioned

“what Jesus did on Holy Saturday.”) The Catechism goes

on, “This was the first meaning given in the apostolic

preaching to Christ’s descent into hell: that Jesus, like all

[people], experienced death & in his soul joined the

others in the realm of the dead.” (The term “realm of the

dead” still strikes me as clearer than “hell” when

describing Christ’s “descent” in death.)

“Spirits in prison” are next mentioned: “But he

descended there as Savior, proclaiming the Good News

to the spirits imprisoned there.” And this is the true

interpretation of 1 Peter 3:19: “He was put to death

insofar as fleshly existence goes, but was given life in the

realm of the spirit. It was in the spirit also that he went to

preach to the spirits in prison.”

The Church’s use of the word “hell” is addressed by

the Catechism in the next paragraph (633): “Scripture

calls the abode of the dead, to which the dead Christ went

down, ‘hell’—Sheol in Hebrew or Hades in Greek—

because those who are there are deprived of the vision of

God. Such is the case for all the dead, whether evil or

righteous, while they await the redeemer: which does not

mean that their lot is identical, as Jesus shows through

the parable of the poor man Lazarus who was received

into ‘Abraham’s bosom’ [see the parable in Luke 16:22-

26]. It is precisely these holy souls [the great ones of the

Old Testament, for example] who awaited their Savior in

Abraham’s bosom, whom Christ the Lord delivered when

he descended into hell.” Lest there be any confusion, the

Catechism adds, “Jesus did not descend into hell to

deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation,

but to free the just who had gone before him.”

So how has Christ’s “descent into hell” found its way

into the lived faith of the Church? In the final paragraph

of this section (635), the Catechism explains, “Christ

went down into the depths of death so that ‘the dead will

hear the voice of the Son of God, & those who hear will

live’” (quoting John 5:25). Which means, the Catechism

emphasizes, that “‘The gospel was preached even to the

dead’ (1 Peter 4:6). The descent into hell brings the

Gospel message of salvation to complete fulfillment.”

Footnote: Do you notice how the Catechism—of the

supposedly unscriptural Catholic Church!—is constantly

interweaving Scripture in its catechesis?

Footnote 2: Maybe next week I’ll have room for the stan-

zas of the old gospel song “The Little Boy from the Car-

penter Shop.” I heard the Bluegrass Cardinals sing that

once. It mentions this “Holy Saturday Christ” taking from

the devil the key to the locked gate so the procession of

the just, the exodus, could begin. That comes from Rev.

1:18 & is also mentioned in paragraph 635 (“Henceforth

the risen Christ holds ‘the keys of Death & Hades’.…”)

Yes! 4 more at SS P/P joined in the annual Catholic

Ministries Appeal last week, nudging us toward our goal:

SS PP: 52 (17.9%) have given $9,995 (57.8%) of goal.

St M: 19 (19.4%) have given $3,250 (53.4%) of goal.

(The goals this year are SS P/P: $17,300 & St M: $6,090)

Diocesan-wide, we’ve climbed another couple of percent-

age points: we’re at 72.9% of our $2.1 million goal.

Finally, we’re planning for a new pictorial directory for our parishes. We’re way overdue. We hardly recog-

nize one another in the current directory. You’ll be hear-

ing more in the days ahead, but for now, plan for a time

to participate: Aug 8-11 & Sept 4-8 (at SS P/P); Aug 15-

16 (at St. M). Members of either parish can use any times

of either parish. (Signups for times will begin early July.)

SSPP Cemetery Sunday: We are going back to having

a second collection for Calvary Cemetery on Sunday,

May 20th. There are some needed improvements at the

cemetery. Several trees need to be removed near the altar

at a cost of $3,500. The altar needs renovations that are

estimated at $4,880.00. Your generosity on May 20th can

help to cover these costs. (The Cemetery Fund

Envelopes in your envelope packets are being

discontinued.)

Spring has Sprung: It’s been a long time coming. Now

that things are greening up, if you have any perennials

that you will be splitting, please consider donating them

to the SS Peter & Paul/social hall courtyard - plantings.

A group of “gardening angels” have been busy adding

plants and bulbs to the courtyard and there is still room

for more. Take a peak and enjoy the tulips and daffodils.

Please call the rectory – 526-5626 if you have plants to

donate. See what blooms next.
