Pastor’s Corner Dear Friends and Families of St. James, Week of Priestly Renewal

Archbishop Jose Gomez has called a gathering of all of the priests who belong to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. His purpose is to challenge us to a renewal of our priestly commitments and service.

Approximately 350 priests will assemble and spend several days of prayer and fellowship, hear input from a number of speakers, and engage in discussions. We ask that you keep us in your prayer during these days. We will be remembering you in our prayers during this time.

Father Kavanagh and I will both participate. We will be away from the parish from Monday noon, August 26, through the mid-afternoon of Thursday, August 29.

During these days Father Emmanuel, who is not an incardinated priest of Los Angeles will celebrate our daily Masses at our usual times of 8 am and Noon and take care of any pastoral needs of the parish. Thank you, Fr. John Callanan

Fr. John will be returning to Ireland on the 25th of August. This Sunday will be his last weekend with us.

We have been blessed by him sharing his gifts with us for over 20 years. We wish him well, a safe journey, and thank him for being here with us this month.

May God bless you always,

Msgr. Mike

Psalm 101

I sing of mercy and justice; to you, Lord, I sing praise.

I study the way of integrity; when will you come to me?

I act with integrity of heart within my household.

I do not allow into my presence anything base. I hate wrongdoing; I will have no part of it.

May the devious heart keep far from me; the wicked I will not acknowledge.

Whoever slanders a neighbor in secret I will reduce to silence.

Haughty eyes and arrogant hearts I cannot endure.

I look to the faithful of the land to sit at my side.

Whoever follows the way of integrity is the one to enter my service.

No one who practices deceit can remain within my house.

No one who speaks falsely can last in my presence.

Morning after morning I clear all the wicked from the land, to rid the city of the Lord of all doers of evil.

One of our parishioners, Linda Zelik, has just published a book about healing from profound grief.

From Despair to Hope, A Survival Guide for Bereaved Parents

This is a must have book for every newly bereaved parent. The book offers help, hope and guidance to those facing the crippling emotions that come with the loss of a child of any age. Twenty-six short, concise chapters offer help to parents as they traverse the early period of crippling grief. She wrote the book she wished she had after losing her son nine years ago. It is an easy-to-read self-help book.

Also included is how to be open to signs from our departed loved ones. It is currently available in St. James bookstore. GriefHelp4parents.weebly.com

Everyday Stewardship

Set the Earth on Fire

My wife can get so invested in a sporting event where one of her favorite teams is playing that she sometimes must leave the room due to the stress.

That is heavy-duty investment! I remember her on the sidelines for our son's soccer games or our daughter's lacrosse games. Her emotions were intense, and she cheered loudly for her children. She never yelled at a referee because it wasn't about them. It was about wanting to see her children, or her favorite team, achieve something great. Her pas-sion was fueled by love and her connectedness to something or someone.

When we look at our Church, we need to see greater passion. Sometimes that passion is there, but many times, we approach our discipleship as just another aspect of who we have become. It needs to be more than that. As we call ourselves Christian, we need to "put on Christ" so that a world in need sees not us, but Jesus. By being serious about our discipleship and living as transformed Everyday Stewards, we bear witness to the power of Jesus Christ.

Jesus said in Luke 12, "I have come to set the earth on fire." Those words sound pretty emotional to me! If we are to be like him, then we need to set the earth on fire. We need to be bold and proclaim the Good News without apology. By our actions of love and justice, we need to show the world that with the Body of Christ on earth, it is not business as usual. Surely our emotions about these things should trump the emotions we have about a sporting event. We need to ask ourselves what truly sets us on fire. —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Gospel Meditation

The Prince of Peace wants to set the world on fire?

This Sunday's Gospel can sound more intense than what we may be accustomed to. It's a passage of contradictions. Jesus so clearly prays for unity, yet here he speaks of division. Why would our God who comes as an offering of love speak so frankly about causing relationships to be torn apart?

The sobering truth is that Jesus is divisive. We see this throughout the Gospels, as the Pharisees critique him, the Romans condemn him, and not everyone in the crowd is enthusiastic about his words. Jesus has not come for the purpose of dividing, but what he does is so radical that it upends the status quo. And it doesn't end with his preaching and miracles!

"There is a baptism with which I must be baptized." Jesus isn't talking about his baptism at the Jordan River, which has already occurred, but the passing through the waters of death on the Cross and rising again to new life in the resurrection. This is divisive stuff! Christ's spiritual fire turned the "fathers" - the Jewish people and Pharisees - against the "sons" - the common people.

Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching. Not everyone wants to be set on fire with the desire to love others. Some prefer to put on a warm sweater and curl up in front of the TV.

In living and loving as Jesus did, we, too, might ruffle some feathers. In disciplining our teenage child for sneaking out, we may cause some division (temporarily, we hope!).

In standing up to gossip and the spread of cruel rumors in our workplace, we might cause division. In emphasizing the dignity of both the desperate mother and the unborn child, we might cause division.

Not everyone wants the Gospel Jesus is preaching.

Not everyone wants the Gospel we are invited to live.

But that's no excuse not to live it.

Catholic Q & A - J. P. Alegria

Q: We recognize and can appreciate that The Catechism of the Catholic Church is an essential, instructive sourcebook of faith, touching on the entirety of the holy spectrum of the depth and breadth of Catholicism.

It is self-described as a book that offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery, [and beauty], of the Catholic faith.

In achieving the catechism's mission, part of its focus is to "...guard the deposit of faith." We've seen that within its composite literary structure that the essence of the deposit of faith presented in the catechism includes the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of the saints.

As the catechism presents this map for a transformational spiritual path, each of us as, "pilgrims on a journey", are believers who certainly face our share of challenges, contemplating questions, great and small.

How do the extraordinary lives of the saints help us put into practice the possibilities of the deposit of faith out-lined in the catechism?

A: In consulting the index of the catechism we find, Saints: see Holiness.

Holiness? If this opening bit of direction seems slightly daunting in its expectations as a bar too high by way of a potential challenge that one can't envision for one's self, it should be remembered that our deposit of faith includes Matthew Chapter 5:

"All are called to holiness. Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

The catechism points out that there is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle.

"All Christians are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity." St. Gregory is quoted, "Christian perfection has but one limit, that of having none." No limits.

The catechism talks about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit amid the communion of saints; embodied in all mankind: "The communion of saints joins us to Christ." The catechism also gives us St. Paul, in 1Thessalonians in a reference about, "holiness before God." The catechism offers nearly thirty direct examples of the value and role of the saints.

In popular spiritual reading, Matthew Kelly writes about the multitude of 'holy moments", all around us. He points out that many saints did not always live perfect lives of holiness, but that they encountered and embraced and perfected holy moments; the message is that saint-like holiness is accessible; possible.

Reverend Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints, is the classic source about these exemplars of faith, with the

Prayer After Communion

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, embolden me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds hide me. Never permit me to be parted from you. From the evil enemy defend me. At the hour of my death call me and bid me come to you, that with your Saints I may praise you for age upon age. Amen.

revised edition of this work that was published in 1894. Here we find that living and visible deposit of faith, illuminating the lives of those men and women who were often far from perfect, yet became hallmarks of piety, virtue and goodness, taking up their crosses to become sublime disciples of Christ.

Here is our own patron saint, St. James.

James, one of the "sons of thunder, who was in the house of Jairus when the dead girl was raised; who stood on the mountain and saw the face of Jesus shine as the sun, and testified to the garments dazzlingly white as snow; he who witnessed the agony in Gethsemane, and who ultimately died the martyr's death.

So it is that we look to, recognize and appreciate the communion of saints, true guardians of the deposit of faith across the ages.

Their own challenges and questioning, trials and triumphs make them the sort of "eyes and hands of Christ", that we aspire to become.

As our Choir leads us in song:

"All you holy men and women, Pray for us..."

The Angelus Prayer

The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it done unto me according to Thy word. Hail Mary…

And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary…

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Our church bells ring out the Angeles at noon and 6 pm.

What is the Big Bang? When asked to explain "The Big Bang" most people think it is something like an explosion that started our Universe. This is a very common understanding but something of a misconception.

The Big Bang is a "model" of the early beginning of the universe after it started. It is not a theory of its origin or creation. No one knows or has a credible idea of "how" it started. So far, God only knows and hasn't told anyone yet that I know of. The Big Bang theory of the early universe was first explained in 1927 by a Belgian Priest named George Lemaitre -- not Galileo, not Newton, and not Einstein! Mickey Haney, Ph.D

Lighting a Candle We do not honor statues but the one whom that statue or

image represents. The light signifies our prayer offered in faith coming into the light of God. With the light of faith, we petition our Lord in prayer, or petition the saint to pray with us and

for us to the Lord. The light also shows a special reverence and our desire to remain present to the Lord in prayer even though we may depart and go about our daily business.
