PASTOR’S PARISHABLES
The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity is easy to
read—maybe too easy. I’ve been tempted to read it too
fast, to not put it down enough or pause enough to ponder
over the insights that come one after another. The author,
Matthew Kelly, even tells the reader to pause over points,
but I’m sometimes too efficient a reader to heed. I tend to
read like somebody gulping down a meal. I’m trying to
slow down. I’m trying to save the book for all of Lent.
In “The Emperor’s New Clothes”—Hans Christian
Anderson’s little tale (which we mentioned at Mass a few
weeks back)—a little boy declares a succinct truth that
many others, right up to the emperor himself, were deny-
ing. The Biggest Lie… does that over & over: pointing out
lies that so many us believe (or treat as true even tho we
know in our hearts they’re not). In fact, the 4th of its 15
chapters is entitled, “I’ve Been Lying to Myself.”
The Biggest Lie… begins with a story of a little boy who
ingeniously puts together in minutes a puzzle that his dad
thought would occupy him for hours. The moral? “If you
get the man right, you get the world right.” And then,
flowing from that: “It is our own thoughts, words, &
actions that are at the epicenter of our circle of influ-
ence.” It’s not worrying about what other people think.
That reminded me of “Bridge of Spies,” the movie I
watched, again, last Sunday night. Near the end, Francis
Gary Powers is coming back home from Russia where
he’d been held after being captured during a U.S. recon-
naissance mission over Russia. Military personnel on the
plane refuse to talk to him. He’s in fact reviled by many
who assumed that, to protect himself, he failed to destroy
evidence that then fell into Soviet hands & that he reveal-
ed top-secret information under pressure/torture in Soviet
prison. He tries to tell personnel on the plane that he
didn’t. He finally turns to the negotiator who gained his
freedom & pleaded, “I didn’t!” & Jim Donovan, hardly
listening to specifics, says simply, “It doesn’t matter what
they think. You know. That’s all that matters.” Or, as
Kelly concludes his 1st chapter, “It all starts with you.”
For St. Patrick’s Day we should pray—or
sing—some-thing like “Christ Be Beside
Me” (to the tune of “Morn-ing Has
Broken.” It’s from “St. Patrick’s
breastplate.” As I read in “Daily Bread” way back, it’s “a
profession of faith, a rune against evil powers, a love
poem to the divine. I remember the words of my former
pastor who said that Patrick reminds us that the ancestors
of us all, regardless of national or ethnic origin, were
probably evangelized by someone who, like Patrick, left
home, family, & friends to bring the gospel to a strange
land. So when we think of Patrick, let us also thank God
for that long-ago person, probably unknown to us, who
sacrificed much & took a giant leap of faith to bring the
faith to our forebears, who passed it on to their children,
to their children’s children, & to us today.”
Come summer, the 4 parishes of SS Peter & Paul & St.
Marys + the parishes in Fairmont & East Chain will be
pastored by 2 priests—as they are now. One of the
differences of course is that it’ll be Fr. Beerman of
Fairmont & a young priest (to be announced later) as an
associate of his. This is a personnel change, which
parishes & priests go through from time to time.
The more significant change is that the 2 priests will live
in the same rectory (Fairmont’s) instead of one living in
Blue Earth. As you must know, our neighbor Trinity
Lutheran has a pastor who does not have a residence in
Blue Earth. (As a matter of fact, she drives farther from
her residence to Blue Earth than the priests in Fairmont
will drive here.) From what I observe of the Trinity con-
gregation, they are not suffering because her residence is
farther from them than mine is from you. (I haven’t polled her
parishioners about that however.) Actually, it seems to me that
it’ll affect the priests’ lives more than the parishes’ lives.
Mainly, it will depend on how Fr. Beerman arrang-es &
manages the schedules & responsibilities of the 2 priests. Again: As now there will still be 2 priests serving 4 parishes.
The part of this equation that I want to keep before us is
our desire (& not just the bishop’s wishes) to give a young
priest a good experience of day-to-day life & mentoring &
collaboration with an older, experienced priest. (As I been
saying to many of you, for the 1st 10 years I was ordained,
I had the benefit of living in 4 different rectories with 11
different priests.) So with this plan to cluster our 4
parishes & add an associate we can both “save a pastor” in
our deanery & provide a mentoring experience for a priest
at the same time.
I noticed recently some at St. Mary’s noticing a new
detail in church. (Details add up to importance.) It’s just a
little stool. It’s for use alongside my presider’s chair. Or
for displaying, as we are currently, our Lenten bowl in
front of the altar. (Representing our Rice Bowl project,
that bowl will be filled on Holy Thursday with the fruit of
our Lenten sacrifices.) One of our principles in church is
to use materials—from decoration to
communionware—that are worthy. Not just
utilitarian; never careless or tacky. Worthy.
This little stool is a sign of the care both of
our parishes have used in keeping our sacred space clean
& uplifting & worthy. That little piece of furniture
matches a companion piece that displays an image of John
the Baptist in front of the pulpit. Each has a simple
“quatrefoil” (I had to look that up) design in it. People
who do things like this for us don’t like me mentioning
their names publicly, so I won’t here either. (He sits on the
right side of church, about 1/2-way back, near the side aisle.)

Many people think going to confession is hard.
What is harder is living without the Lord’s grace and
mercy. You don’t know what peace you’re missing
until you know it through the sacrament of
reconciliation. This Lent, we dare you to try it and we
dare you to share the good news that God is merciful
and creating a path of return for you. Learn more

Circle of Grace curriculum will be taught on March 20th! Circle of Grace is a safe environment program that the Diocese of Winona-Rochester requires all Faith Formation programs and Catholic schools to teach to
children and youth once a year to be compliant with The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. Through Circle of Grace, adults assist children and youth to recognize that each of us lives within a Circle of Grace that holds our very essence in body, mind, heart, soul, and sexuality. Children and youth are taught to identify and maintain appropriate physical, emotional, spiritual and sexual boundaries; recognize when boundary violations are about to occur; and demonstrate how to take action when boundaries are threatened or violated. Circle of Grace is clinically sound and grounded in the Catholic tradition.
