Prayer
Dear Brothers and Sisters of St. Vincent de
Paul,
The recommendation of qualitative,
continual, and meaningful prayer
recommended by our Church is a gem for
every believer. Just as we need food and
drink to survive, so too our spiritual life-
relationship with God-can only be nourished
through prayer. The forms of prayer we
exercise on a continual basis are vocal
prayer, meditation, contemplation, and
adoration. Some like to pray while walking
out with nature, others in the adoration
chapel, some by spontaneous expressions of
the heart in small groups, and some with
rote prayers such as the rosary, the Divine
Mercy chaplet, etc... Our journey with the
Lord is satisfied when we know that we have
gone to the interior of our soul to find the
true meaning of who we are and how we
fulfill God’s will in our life. If you are
interested in praying with scripture,
particularly the psalms, I recommend
Gabriel Bunge’s book Earthen Vessels: The
Practice of Personal Prayer According to the
Patristic Tradition. In the first chapter,
Bunge differentiates between psalmody,
prayer and meditation and how at the same
time they are interconnected. It is always a
good way of also recommending a book on
prayer to someone you care for or someone
wanting to know how to pray.
I would like to
share with you
text from
Conchita’s
writings on
prayer from a
book she wrote:
“Vocal prayer
is the Church’s favorite, it is like the body,
and mental prayer is the soul, letting go,
lost, and inflamed with love in the
greatness and splendor of God. That is
what people do in heaven: pray. To do
prayer well involves recollection. And
what is prayer? Prayer is communication
with God, it is a balm that heals wounds,
the consolation that relieves pain, the
sigh that undoes anguish; the weeping in
which all sorrows are exhaled, the
sentiment which synthesizes all
tenderness, and the precious jewel,
which transforms all evil into good. The
state of grace preserves it and sacrifice
fosters it. Prayer is based on that
mysterious swaying of affections and
memories, in that incessant intimacy with
God in which the soul grows unto
holiness.” (Sed Perfectos, 315)
May these summer days continue to be for
you a source of transformation in our Lord.
Blessings,
Fr. Hugo, M.Sp.S. - Pastor

ustedes.
Bendiciones,
P. Hugo, M.Sp.S.

August is National Wellness Month
All during August,
National Wellness
Month focuses on
self-care, manag-
ing stress and
promoting healthy routines. Create
wholesome habits in your lifestyle all
month long and see how much better you
feel!
Research has shown self-care helps manage stress and promotes happiness. Whether you challenge yourself to a new yoga pose or try a different spa treat-ment, make a small change and impact your health in positive ways.
There are numerous ways to make those small changes, too.
• Increase your water intake.
• Add more fruits and veggies to your
meals.
• Monitor your sleep and make
adjustments for better sleep habits
• Join a yoga, walking, or aerobics
class.
• Learn to meditate.
These small steps can lead to many more
healthy habits in your lifestyle.
