BAROQUE VIRGINIA PERFORMANCE ACADEMY ARTHUR HAAS (HARPSICHORD) is one of the most sought after performers and teachers of Baroque music in the United States today. He has performed as soloist all over the US and Europe, and China, and teaches in several of the most prestigious music schools in the country including the Yale School of Music, Stony Brook University, and the Mannes College of Music. He is featured on numerous CDs including solo French music, Bach keyboard concertos, and chamber music of Couperin, Bach, and Telemann. Praised for his “ravishing vehemence” and “soulful performance” (New York Times), VIOLINIST DANIEL S. LEE has appeared as a soloist and leader with Early Music New York, Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Quodlibet Ensemble, and Yale Schola Cantorum, among others. He is the founding director of the critically-acclaimed period ensemble, the Sebastians. He has given lectures and masterclasses at Connecticut College, Manhattan School of Music, Purchase College (SUNY), University of Kansas, and UNC Chapel Hill. JUDITH MALAFRONTE (MEZZO SOPRANO) has sung with opera companies, orchestras, oratorio societies, and early music groups throughout the world. Holding degrees from Vassar College and Stanford University, she has recorded for major labels in a broad range of repertoire and writes regularly for Opera News, Early Music America magazine, and other print and online outlets. At Yale University, Malafronte teaches freshman seminars on Shakespeare and Music, Literature and Opera, instructs choral conductors in vocal technique, and gives courses in historical performance. She holds degrees in recorder performance from Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University and was the recipient of a Fulbright Grant. Anne is a founding member of the ensemble Wayward Sisters, which won Early Music America’s Naxos Recording Competition and released its debut CD in 2014. Anne has also received awards from the American Recorder Society and the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts. LYNNE MACKEY has performed as harpsichord concerto soloist, and also in chamber music and duo harpsichord concerts. She holds piano performance degrees from the Eastman School, The Juilliard School, and the University of Michigan, and has performed in the United States, Europe, Brazil, and Africa. She founded the Virginia Baroque Performance Academy in 2009. MARTHA MCGAUGHEY (VIOLA DA GAMBA) studied with Jodi Saval and Wieland Kuijken. For many years she was a member of the Five Centuries Ensemble, based in Paris. THIS WORKSHOP IS DESIGNED to give participants hands-on experience in Baroque technique and interpretation through master classes and coached ensemble sessions with internationally acclaimed faculty. We welcome players of all levels in this five-day Baroque immersion course. Pitch will be at both 415 and 440. Solo practice time will be available for all participants.

HIGHLIGHTS• Harpsichord: solo repertoire, continuo skills, coached ensembles. No early keyboard experience required.• Violin/Viola: solo repertoire, period performance practice (Baroque and modern violin), and coached ensembles.• Viola da gamba/Cello: solo, consort and duo repertoire, individual coaching on bass lines, coached ensembles, (bass

lines and obbligato parts), and introduction to viol for string players.• Singers: solo, duet, and trio repertoire, ornamen tation, rhetoric, and coached ensembles. Music for all voice types.• Recorder: technique, period performance practice, solo repertoire, coached ensembles.• Chamber music: all participants will be involved in the coached ensemble sessions.

The Shenandoah Valley, home of the Virginia Baroque Performance Academy, is rich in history and natural beauty. There are museums, battlefields, caverns, rivers, forests, and mountains to explore. Nearby Staunton is the home of The American Shakespeare Center and The Blackfriars Playhouse, the world’s only replica of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre.
