Pastor’s Corner

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

When the Benicia Fire Department came across our permit to tear down the buildings on the grounds of the new rectory site they requested the opportunity to use the buildings for training purposes. As a result, for the last two weeks our Benicia fire department has been cutting holes in walls and roofs, filling the buildings with fake smoke to simulate real fires, and dragging dummies around the property. Keep your wise guy comments to yourself because I was not on the grounds.

The fire department is very grateful to our community for allowing them this opportunity to practice and hone their life saving skills, and I am happy St. Dominic’s was able to assist our fire department.

This week the demolition company will be clearing the lot of the existing structures or what now remains of them. Last week we filed the building permits with the city and gave building plans to five contractors for bidding. We hope to award the bid by the end of February and break ground in March. I know…if you want to hear God laugh tell him your plans! As you know this weekend is National Catholic Schools week, so please pray for our Principal, teachers and staff that they continue to faithfully educate our students according to Church teachings and with the highest standards in academic excellence. Starting in January, the second weekend of every month there is a special collection envelope dedicated to Tuition Assistance in order to help as many of our faithful families make Catholic education affordable. God Bless, Fr. Jerome

The Feast Day of The Presentation of the Lord is celebrated on Tuesday, February 2nd. The Presentation of the Lord at the Temple is a beautiful feast day in the liturgical calendar of the Church. The words uttered by the elder Simeon never fail to touch me deeply, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” (Lk 2:29–32) Every time I meditate on this passage, I can not help but contemplate on the profound faith Simeon must have possessed, as well as the strong yearning and anticipation in his heart. Moreover, I wonder what joy must have gone through his heart as he saw and held the infant Jesus. The feast of Presentation this year marks the conclusion of the Year of Consecrated Life, which began on November 30, 2014. Therefore, as a young religious, the celebration this year is especially meaningful for me. Of course the meaning of this event in Jesus’ life is very rich, but I would like to take this opportunity to share with you how the mystery of presentation relates to consecrated life in a personal way. The Evangelist Luke tells us that Jesus was brought to the Temple by Mary and Joseph to be consecrated to the Lord. This was to fulfill the law stipulated in Exodus 13, “Consecrate to me every firstborn; whatever opens the womb among the Israelites, whether of human being or beast, belongs to me.” (Ex 13:2) Likewise, by the virtue of their vows, all the religious men and women, whether active or contemplative (or both) are consecrated to God. In other words, they belong to God in a special way. As I meditate on the fourth joyful mystery of the Rosary, I often pray that I may be pure and without defilement, so that Our Lady would lead me to the sanctuary of God. As mentioned above, I also contemplate often on the role of Simeon in this Gospel account. Undoubtedly, Simeon was given a singular grace to witness the presentation of Christ. Although this gift was not given up for me, as a religious, I also pray often that Our Lady may bring to me Jesus Christ, to whom I am ultimately consecrated. As seen above, Mary’s role is irreplaceable in the story of the Presentation, just as she is indispensable in the life of all the men and women religious. In fact, according to the Church’s holy tradition, Mary was herself a consecrated virgin. As I follow Pope Francis’ call for all the religious to look to the past with gratitude, live the present with passion, and embrace the future with hope, I realize that I need Mary’s intercession more than ever. She in her earthly life embodied these three ideals perfectly. As Pope Francis puts it so eloquently in the apostolic letter that promulgates the Year of Consecrated Life, Mary is “the unsurpassed model for all those who follow Christ in love of God and service to their neighbor.” To all the young adults in our parish, I would like to encourage you to be as courageous as Mary. If you feel the attraction or hear the call to live a consecrated life, respond to God generously. As we read in the Gospel of Luke, making yourself a gift consecrated to God is a sure way to enter into God’s awesome presence and see his salvation. ~Br. Gregory Liu, O.P.

Committee Needs You!

Thank you to all St. Dominic's Parishioners that participated in "Knitting Angels for Hospice". All donations were very much appreciated. Hospice preferred receiving our donations in mid-January due to having numerous donations during the Holidays. They said, "It’s so nice to receive a donation after the Holiday rush to brighten up January for their patients". Next year we will do the same timeframe of January.

Thank you, again! Your items are absolutely beautiful, and cheer up loved ones.'

Catholic Schools Week

Open House Today!

Dear Parishioners,

At St. Dominic School we are lucky to learn, play, and grow in a special environment. This would not be possible without the generous support of people like you, the members of St. Dominic’s Parish. When you support our school, you invest in the future of all of our students and the Catholic Church. As we celebrate National Catholic Schools Week, we want to thank you for all you do to help our school. We are grateful for your prayers and contributions, and we appreciate the time and talent you so generously share through your volunteer efforts. The National Catholic Schools Week theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service.” We consider St. Dominic’s Parish an important part of our community, and we hope you will join us as we celebrate our Catholic education this week by visiting our open house this weekend. St. Dominic School has a rich tradition of excellence and I aim to live up to the high level of success that has been set by so many great educators, parents, pastors, and students who have preceded me. I am truly blessed to be part of this wonderful learning community and can only hope that your family will be a part of it, either as student families or generous supporters. Many Blessings, Katie Perata Principal

What our Parent’s have to say...

“St. Dominic School has provided my three children with the academic and spiritual foundation to succeed. They continue to excel in their high school AP classes thanks to the dedication of the outstanding teachers at SDS. “ ~Noreen Cillo, SDS Parent

“We spent so much time deliberating between St. Dominic’s and Matthew Turner, until finally we realized it isn’t apples to apples. One offers a reputation for strong academics but St. Dominic’s offers a reputation for partnering with parents to develop a highly successful, well rounded child; academically, physically, and spiritually. These are skills that will serve our daughter her whole life.” ~ Erin Jacobs, SDS Parent Since 2013

"Our first grader has blossomed largely due to the interaction with upperclassmen. SDS does an amazing job of integrating younger students with older mentors. Her confidence and poise continues to grow. And also, "We love knowing our children are in a safe, learning environment from 6:30 am to 6 pm every day! SDS provides surprisingly affordable (on-site) before and after school care. It's a great feeling when my children don't want to leave because they enjoy Extended Care so much." ~ Janet Roberson, SDS Parent

"9 years ago when we decided to send our first child to St Dominic's, we had no idea how we were going to financially be able to do it. Now we have three kids at St Dominic's and have realized it's more affordable than we thought. It's one of the most important sacrifices in our life" ~ Leslee Curtola, SDS Parent Since 2007

Perpetual Adoration

Fr. Michael Hurley, O.P. St. Thomas Aquinas and the Summa Wednesday, February 3rd, 7PM in the Parish Hall St. Thomas Aquinas is no doubt the most preeminent theologian in the Church's history, and he left us a

treasure trove of theological treatises: the Summa Theologiae. More than seven centuries after the completion of the Summa, people are still unpacking the wisdom contained in this massive tome. But how do Catholic faithful make sense and start benefitting from this Summa? Let Fr. Michael Hurley break it open for us and tell us about St. Thomas, the ultimate Summa wrestler.

Periodically, the Office of Faith Formation will feature one of its volunteer catechists to share their joy of teaching religious education so that you may consider sharing in their joy.

The catechist is a Christian who is mindful of God, who is guided by the memory of God in his or her entire life and who is able to awaken that memory in the hearts of others. ~ Pope Francis: homily at Mass for Catechists, September 9, 2013

Spotlight on Mary Timmerman Parker – 7th Grade Religious Education Catechist My name is Mary Timmerman-Parker and I facilitate 7th grade religious education and Year II Confirmation. I say I facilitate because I truly believe 7th grade and Confirmation are specific times when students are led on a personal journey to Christ. My family and I joined St. Dominic’s in 2012, when we relocated from Arizona. I began my St. Dominic’s religious education ministry that year, when my youngest was in 6th grade. I was scheduled to assist in the 6th grade class, but due to unusual circumstances was asked after the first class if I was willing to teach 7th grade! As my passion has always been social justice, I immediately agreed. During 7th grade, we explore the seven Catholic Social Justice teachings of life and dignity of the human person; call to family, community, and participation; solidarity; dignity of work; rights and responsibilities; option for the poor and vulnerable; and care for God’s creation. The curriculum I prepare is not pre-planned, but dependent upon current events and the activities of Pope Francis. During Confirmation II, I help the students understand the role of the Holy Spirit in their decisions and work with them to find their saint-match. I seek activities for them to learn about a variety of saints to find the saint that best matches how he or she wants to give back to our community. I can think of nothing more fulfilling than to encourage youth to learn more about Catholicism and be part of their spiritual journey in a life of Christ. I thank you for the gift of your children, and look forward to their participation in religious education at St. Dominic’s.

Blessings, Mary Timmerman-Parker
