'MIDDLE EASTERN GYPSY JAZZ'Interview with Mohammed Rashid

The Bahraini musician Mohammed Rashid has brought a new life to the jazz music in Bahrain through the 'Middle Eastern Gypsy Jazz'. This talented guitarist has so far captured the souls of many in Bahrain with his music.

Mohammed Rashid shares his journey with music with Bahrain This Week readers.

How did you start your journey with music?I started my journey with music from a very young age. As a kid, I was familiar with my uncle playing on different kinds of instruments and that made me closer to music, especially guitar, which I choose to be my major since it really got all my attention in a younger age.

How do you define 'Jazz'?Jazz, which developed over the years, contains many styles such as the bebop and swings. It’s a very alive music, and says a lot. We brought the jazz from its origins and opened the door for this colourful music to spread its magic in the Middle East. Many Arabs, both musicians and audience, are into jazz now and it’s somehow establishing its empire in the region.

Tell us about 'Middle Eastern Gypsy Jazz'Gypsy jazz was founded by the great Django Reinhardt. He invented the music on the 30's. I was touched by his work and that made me very determine to bring the gypsy jazz to Bahrain by mixing this art with the Middle Eastern. At the same time it gives the chance to the western audience to know our intelligent music.

How was the origin of Mohammed Rashid Trio? The Trio started to play since 2015, and our main goal was to bring the gypsy jazz to the audience in Bahrain, and I can say that it didn’t click immediately. But, afterwards you can really see the difference, especially after producing my first EP album.

How does the Kingdom support your music? Some organizations here give the chance for you as a musician to be a part of their events. I think that makes a support for both Bahraini and youth musicians. Also the music festivals by the government or non-government firms, not to forget the Role of Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities give great platforms for the musicians.

What are the challenges that you have faced? As I told you, I started in a very young age, and the main challenge back then was the lack of information. It’s all in the internet now, you can even learn how to play and join classes anywhere. However, that didn’t stop me from learning and I coped up with this challenge by being overcoming each challenge with determination and ambition.

Where all you have performed? Which one is your most favourite performance?I appreciate each and every performance that I have got a chance to do. I get the chance to play inside and outside the kingdom for a solo performance on the stage or being a part of a band. The performance that is close to my heart is the performance at the Bahrain jazz festival.

Who are your greatest supporters?Starting from the supporters in the family to my friends out there. Not to forget Clockwork, who had supported me as a young musician! The great Bahraini musician and teacher, Dr. Mubarak Najem put a lot of time and effort in the music industry by involving the youth and encouraging them to be a part of the cultural and musical scene in Bahrain.

Whom do you admire the most among your contemporaries? There are many who play different kinds of styles like...like Carlos Santana, Al di Meola, Bireli Lagrene etc.

What is your message to the aspiring musicians?I advise the aspiring musicians to practice more, and be more patient. Also, look for the information in its right place since music is a wide world. Find your real passion and work hard to improve yourself since the life out there is really moving fast.

Speeding has many consequences. One of which is that when something happens suddenly on the road, the drivers often lose control of the vehicle due to shock and confusion. The suddenness of an occurrence leaves hardly any time to take a corrective measure in those few precious seconds apart from putting the brakes with force which can result in the vehicle turning over, especially if it is a small car.

So one has to keep ones focus constantly on the road to watch out for the sudden appearance of a living being or an object.

One has to be most careful about children making a sudden, often nonchalant, appearance

on the road. They have a knack to appear on the road out of nowhere unannounced, with a devil-may-care bearing and attitude.

Very small children can make a solo appearance in a lane or, even if accompanied by an adult, may suddenly decide to wrench themselves free and stroll into the middle of the road. The trick for the driver is to stop the vehicle until the child can sort itself out and, if an adult is around, press the horn once to draw his attention.

Even schoolchildren, especially those getting down from their school bus and in a tearing hurry to reach home, may not bother to look left or right and might suddenly emerge from behind the bushed along the road divider and plonk themselves on the road, bending double under the weight of their bags. So watch out for that school bus parked along the road in the distance, slow down and see how the children move.

Cats and dogs, stray or pet, are no different and may suddenly make a dash across the road. Slow down if one is lolling and strolling in the distance, put your brakes if you can spot one in time if you have reached close to one. Every life is

precious, even an inarticulate animal’s especially since in this case they cannot be expected to observe the rules of traffic and the entire responsibility of ensuring they are not harmed lies on the driver.

The worst culprits are the adults in this game of ‘sudden appearance’ – those pedestrians who tend to make a sudden dash across the road, away from street signals, sometimes jumping over the road dividers and scaring the driver with their manoeuvres.

One has to also beware of things falling on the road from the vehicles ahead. These may range from a carton of goods or a piece of furniture falling out of a badly loaded and clumsily packed pick-up to a massive stone meant for a reclamation site sliding down a heavy truck.

And finally, when the winds are heavy a driver may encounter an entirely different class of road-intruder – when a gust suddenly dumps a flying little empty cardboard box on the road ahead of you.

So one has to drive with care. There is no end to ‘suddennesses’ on the highway. Even a vehicle swerving into your lane unannounced might give you a scare!

Make Allowance For ‘Sudden’ Appearances

Bahrain Authority For Culture & Antiquities Holds The Inaugural Meeting Of "Manama Calls"

The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) held the inaugural meeting of the Manama Calls initiative on Thursday, January 24, 2019. The meeting, which took place at the Bahrain National Museum Lecture Hall, was attended by Her Excellency Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of BACA, and Sheikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, Governor of the Capital Governorate, as well a number of officials, media, and residents of Manama.

Her Excellency Shaikha Mai delivered a welcoming address in which she stressed importance of looking after the architectural, social and cultural heritage

of Manama, noting that getting the city inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site can raise its profile and increase the number of visitors and tourists interested in culture looking for something exceptional and unique during their visit to the region, coupled with BACA’s initiative to transform the area into one of the leading creative cities worldwide.

Her Excellency went on to add that the city’s historical buildings and their identity should be preserved due to their irreplaceable architectural heritage value. She praised the support received from the private sector and the cooperation of several families from Manama BACA to

preserve the unique architectural heritage of their homes.

Her Excellency’s address was followed by a joint presentation by the Architect and Cultural Heritage Specialist Mrs. Miray Wosinski and Eng. Fatema Abdali in which they talked about BACA’s efforts in the study and restoration of some of Manama's landmarks and economic and cultural activities that take place there in parallel.

They also highlighted some of the key services BACA provides to the residents of Manama, including reviewing requests concerning historical and ancient homes and helping people preserve their architectural heritage, as well as receiving

emergency requests and daily personal communication with the residents.

This meeting and call to save the history and traditional features and landmarks of Manama, which are vanishing day after day. These include abandoned historical schools, shuttered shops and empty beautiful houses deserted by their original residents.

The layout of its neighborhoods and architectural composition of Manama stand out for their intricate details which bear the indelible prints of the cultures that lived there and made it a mosaic of cultural and religious coexistence. This, in turn, enhances the chances of BACA successfully getting Manama inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site following its inclusion in the preliminary list last year.

“Manama Calls” brings to light BACA’s celebrations of several noteworthy jubilees over the course of this year under the theme “From One Jubilee to the Next", including the first centennial of the establishment of Manama Municipality, one of the first municipalities in the Arab world and the first in the GCC region, as well as the start of formal education through the American Mission School 120 years ago and numerous other sites and landmarks of historical significance and value.

AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation signed an agreement with Tamkeen to support a number of programs designated for enhancing the skills of the Bahraini youth and preparing them to embark on their careers. The agreement is entered into by the two entities for the 3rd consecutive year, stressing the Foundation’s vital role in supporting its students through “Rayaat” Scholarships Program, as well as training youth within the “Ithra’a Youth Enrichment Program, which is being supported by Tamkeen for the first time.

Commenting on the signing of the agreement, HRH Sheikha Zain bint Khalid AlKhalifa, Chairperson of AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation, said: “We express utmost appreciation

towards Tamkeen’s continuous support of the Foundation’s programs that aim to support the Bahraini Youth, and for generously offering every possible opportunity of growth and development for them, enabling them to effectively compete on an international scale, and embodying the very same objectives we have set to achieve for our students.”

‘AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation has offered until now more than 270 scholarships for students, enrolling them in different programs, according to each individual’s natural orientations, capabilities and skills, while taking into consideration labor market needs and Economic Vision 2030. We look forward to further cooperation with Tamkeen in the future, aiming towards the creation

of a generation of powerful, skillful and efficient youth to lead the development of the Kingdom of Bahrain.”, added HRH Sheikha Zain.

For his part, Dr Ebrahim Mohammed Janahi Chief Executive of Labour Fund Tamkeen stressed the importance of partnerships between different local parties to create more opportunities for Bahraini youth. "Our partnership with Al Mabarah Al Khalifa Foundation continues for the third year aiming at supporting Bahraini youth and developing their professional and leadership competencies alongside with their academic progression, to increase their ability to compete in the labour market whether they choose to become employees or to take the path of entrepreneurship. "

Having a closer look at the programs, “Rayaat” program offers training sessions and workshops that aim to reinforce self-esteem, develop self-assertion, and enhance speaking, management and communication skills, with a focus on English fluency, giving students a good platform to engage in the market and fulfill their roles.

Among the certificates sponsored by Tamkeen is the English Proficiency Certification offered by Berlitz Language Center Bahrain, and a Photoshop course offered by Training Plus Institute, besides efficiency and basic skills assessment. Other supported courses include time management and presentation skills

offered by BIBF, and also advance First Aid course offered by the General Directorate of Civil Defense and Bahrain Red Crescent Society. Tamkeen’s support will include more courses on effective teambuilding, vocational protocol, and leading high performance teams, offered by Golden Trust Institute.

It is worth mentioning that “Rayaat” Program, launched in 2011, offers scholarships for students to enroll in any of the accredited universities in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and is packed with other benefits, among which are incentives, workshops, and training opportunities in both the public and private sectors. “Rayaat” will also contribute to boosting a culture of social responsibility by fostering volunteering and social participation among students, within an encouraging and supportive environment.

As for the “Ithra’a” Youth Enrichment Program, AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation is undertaking the release of the second edition of the Program in February under the slogan: “To Live is to Give”, which aims to embed the culture of giving within the youth through self-discovery and fulfillment of personal aims, with the inclusion of promoting volunteering within the community.

The program will include the participation of more than 90 members aged between 14-15 years who will be mentored by university students that have received prior training supported by “Tamkeen”.

The much loved Abu Dhabi Science Festival will welcome visitors to its ninth edition this month-end. And this year, children in the emirate’s Al Dhafra region will also have a chance to attend workshops closer to home, senior education officials announced in the capital recently.

“Why not go bigger and give children in Al Dhafra a chance to participate, we thought. And this is why there will be workshops in Madinat Zayed’s City Mall for the duration of the festival,” said Sanad Humaid, official spokesperson for the festival at the Abu Dhabi Department

of Education and Knowledge (Adek).“We expect about 120,000 visitors,

In Al Ain’s Al Jahili Park, about 6,500 children are expected to participate in 20 workshops, while over

1,600 children are expected attend five workshops in Al Dhafra.

Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih on Thursday inaugurated a new scientific research vessel called “Najil,” during a ceremony at Jubail Commercial Port in the Eastern Province. The ship is equipped with the latest marine technology to carry out research work in the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea, and its crew’s responsibilities will include assessing fish stocks and

studying the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems.

Al-Falih, who is also chairman of the board of directors of King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), thanked King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their generous backing of the Saudi research and development sector.

The vessel will support scientific research being conducted by KACST on the Kingdom’s seas, Al-Falih said. “It also enables the Saudi universities, as well as national and international firms, to carry out maritime research throughout the year.

“KACST seeks to build national capabilities and skills in the field of maritime research, while maintaining

maritime biodiversity in the Kingdom,” he added.

Contained within the ship’s five internal levels are two dry and wet laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, scientific equipment for monitoring weather and wave movements and for deep-sea sampling, plus technology to scan and map the seabed.

6 Winter Hair Care Tips For Healthy Hair

And Scalp

The winter months can put your hair and scalp under a lot of stress. Here are some key tips and tricks to keep your hair and scalp healthy during winter.

1. Protect your hair from the elementsCold, wet winter weather can take its toll on your hair. The best way to protect your hair from the elements is to cover your head with a hat or scarf, but make sure that it’s not so tight that it will restrict the circulation in your scalp. While it protects your hair, wearing a winter hat can also lead to a build up of sweat that could irritate the scalp. So make sure you use an anti-dandruff shampoo to stop dandruff in its tracks before flakes start to appear.

2. Keep your hair and scalp hydratedIf you’re dehydrated on the inside, it will show on the outside too so make sure you drink plenty of water to help keep your hair and scalp hydrated.

3. Avoid over-styling your hairLimit your use of tools like hair dryers and curling irons, as the heat can dry out your hair and scalp, increasing the risk of damage.

4. Have your hair trimmed regularlyWhether you have long or short hair, winter weather can make the ends of your hair dry and brittle. Regular trims will keep your hair in good condition and reduce the chance of split ends.

5. Wash your hair in warm or cool waterIt might be tempting in the colder months to turn the water temperature up, but try to avoid washing your hair in very hot water - use warm or cool water to avoid damage. Hot water can dry out your hair and damage the delicate skin on your scalp, which may be extra sensitive during the winter.

6. Don’t leave home with wet hairTake the extra time to blow-dry your hair or let it dry naturally before going outside. In cold weather your hair will take a long time to dry - and if your hair freezes, you risk breakage.

RETHINKTECH UPDATE

Apple’s first beta for iOS 12.2 contains strong evidence that we’re nearing an AirPods hardware refresh. The beta includes a setup interface for “Hey Siri” that mentions hands-free voice commands on AirPods — a feature

that isn’t available with the current, first-generation pair of truly wireless earbuds. No other leaks about new AirPods have (yet) been uncovered in the iOS beta released earlier . The original AirPods hit shelves over two

Intel is showing off a new RealSense camera with a specific focus on enabling hardware-makers to help their products understand where they are in the world. The RealSense Tracking Camera T265 is designed to easily present robotics

and AR/VR hardware with inside-out tracking tech.

The Tracking camera utilizes SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) tech to orient the device while producing a detailed spatial

years ago.But there have been rumors of an

updated set for months that Apple was preparing a slight AirPods revamp with a new chip and “Hey Siri” support for release by the end of 2018 — probably to hit the holiday shopping rush. That obviously didn’t pan out, but this new iOS tidbit suggests Apple is still preparing for their launch, and it might be coming rather soon.

A “high-end” version of AirPods with noise cancelation, water resistance, and extended wireless range are under development and planned for a 2019 debut. Apple will launch second-generation AirPods with health-monitoring features in the first half of this year. (Health-tracking functionality was also mentioned in Bloomberg’s report as something Apple is considering for the earbuds.) Many folks also noted that Apple’s

September event kicked off with a video where someone said “Hey Siri” while donning AirPods, but who knows. Maybe she just yelled loud enough for the phone to pick it up...

There’s no telling when iOS 12.2 will be rolled out to consumers, unfortunately, so it’s hard to predict when the new AirPods might show up. Each iOS update usually goes through several beta revisions before a wide public release, so it could be a month or two if not longer. Also, it’s possible that this mention of AirPods and “Hey Siri” could disappear in a future release — similar to the way Apple removed AirPlay 2 and Group FaceTime from prior iOS betas until they were fully ready in later updates. But again, the new setup interface isn't visible to users, so it could be something Apple was purposefully trying to hide for now.

layout of whatever environment in which it is traversing. The camera is unsurprisingly powered by the Movidius Myriad 2 computer vision chipset, which handles the data processing for the camera.

Inside-out tracking has been getting less and less compute-intensive; this seems to be the area where Intel is making the most strides with the T265.

The T265 will start shipping at the end of February.

Analysts believe, 2019 is going to be the year for business enterprises who have been waiting to finally get on board to witness a plethora of advancements for their industry. What are the technology disruptions we expect next year? New and innovative uses for machine learning across industries? Impact of artificial intelligence in education? Human and machine interaction evolving further? The rise of AI-powered assistants? This is just the starting of the digital revolution, so let's educate ourselves on what the mavens of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are predicting for the months ahead.

New and Innovative Uses for Machine Learning Across IndustriesThe Food and Beverages industry is experimenting with machine learning by using the technology to predict which items will run out of stock within a specified timeframe. This timely prediction has huge cost benefit, which helps to keep a balance between the high demand for commodities like milk, mineral water, salt and supply of the same.

The US Army is currently using

machine learning to predict when fighter vehicles need maintenance or repair. A serious thought on this will make you realize that there are millions of pieces of equipment that the Army uses on regular basis. So in order to keep track of the data involved, the Army is taking help of an AI assistant. For the first cut deployment, a few scores of armored infantry vehicles will receive sensors inside of their engines. These sensors will record temperature and RPM (revolutions-per-minute), then transmit it to the software. Machine learning capabilities will look for patterns in the data that match engine failures in similar vehicles.

Now just imagine if your car could do this. AAA benefits might become obsolete if your car could tell you that the transmission is about to crap out on you. If the army is benefitting from the technology, I'm sure the day is not far till we experience it in the civilian world. Self-driving autonomous cars are live examples of smart usage of artificial intelligence.

Life Sciences and Healthcare industry is also unraveling potential new uses for this technology. Recently Google did a pilot project on artificial intelligence, and they have begun

to predict the chances of a patient’s death using machine learning with a staggering 95% accuracy. AI created by the company looks at the variables of a patient’s health records, takes into account demographics, health history, and other factors. It then predicts the probability of the patient’s death within the stipulated hours of hospitalization. That sounds a bit despondent when you first hear about it but think of the impact it could have on the healthcare industry. The timely predictions can enable medical practitioners to take appropriate action. Machine learning could help save millions of lives, isn’t that amazing? And the days are numbered by when we will start reaping the actual benefits.

BOC To launch Al Firjan Playgrounds Initiative

in many decisions that focused on the initiative, such as field trips to several Al Firjan stadiums in the four governorates.

There were also talks on using several former football stars to support this initiative and allocate promotional gifts for young players to encourage them to practice the game in their spare time instead of using entertaining electronic devices that are scientifically proven to be harmful to public health.

This committee has made progress in preparing to activate this initiative. The meeting which was held yesterday, resulted in many positive results and constructive proposals put forward by the members.

It is hoped that this initiative will be implemented in reality in the coming weeks after the stadiums have been allocated in all four governorates.

The Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) has unveiled a plan to set up playgrounds equipped with integrated sport and entertainment facilities.

The initiative, known as ‘Al Firjan Playgrounds’, is part of the BOC’s efforts to provide people in different age groups with multiple sport

facilities and entertainment services across the country.

Football, the most practiced sport in the world, will be the first to be included in this project, while other sports will be added such as volleyball and basketball.

A committee has been formed and

includes representatives from inside and outside the committee, headed by Supreme Council for Youth and Sports assistant secretary general and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) secretary general Abdulrahman Askar.

This committee held a series of preparatory meetings, which resulted
