Sunday, January 18 Sermon Text: Acts 7:1-53

Stephen’s Speech

Bloomfield Baptist Family: Citing Deuteronomy, Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) We desperately need to read God’s word and to meditate on its truths, but the sad real-ity for many is that we are not reading it at all. According to a study by LifeWay Research, less than 20 percent of churchgoers read the Bible on a daily basis and 18 percent of churchgoers admit to rarely or never reading their Bibles outside of a church worship service. If you are not reading your Bible on a daily basis, I want to encourage you to do so. As Jesus said, we were not made to live without it. I also realize that for many of us, we are not sure where to start or exactly how to read our Bibles. So, I recommend the following resources to help you to start the practice of consistently reading God’s word.

Living By the Book: The Art and Science of Reading the Bible by Howard Hendricks

Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald Whitney

The great thing about the Bible is that you do not need a book about how to read the Bible in order to read the Bi-ble! You can simply start by opening it up and reading. I recommend these books because they are helpful in de-veloping a discipline of reading the Bible, as well as a method for Bible reading and study. So, open God’s word today and see what the Lord teaches you as you read! Reaching Bloomfield with You,
