Chicago Selected for Federal Securing the Cities Program

DHS announced Monday the program is expanding to include Chicago and Houston. The Securing the Cities program seeks to reduce the risk of a successful deployment of

a radiological or nuclear weapon against major metropolitan areas by assisting state and local partner agencies as they build regional capabilities to detect, analyze and report nuclear and other radioactive materials. The program provides up to $30 million over five years to a region selected through a competitive application process. “We are excited Chicago was selected for inclusion

in the Securing the Cities Program, and we look forward to supporting them as this project takes shape,” said IEMA Director James K. Joseph. “IEMA has some of the top nuclear and radiation safety experts in the country on our staff who will bring extensive knowledge and expertise to this effort.” The start date for funding to the Chicago project will be announced at a later date.

McDonald’s to Fully Transition to Cage-Free Eggs

To meet consumers’ changing expectations and preferences, McDonald’s announced that it will fully transition to cage-free eggs for its nearly 16,000 restaurants in the U.S. and Canada over the next 10 years. “Our customers are increasingly interested in knowing more about their food and where it comes from,” said McDonald’s USA President Mike Andres. “Our decision to source only cage-free eggs reinforces the focus we’re placing on food quality and our menu to meet what consumers truly want.”

“We’re proud of the work we’re doing with farmers and suppliers to advance environmentally and socially conscious practices for the animals in our supply chain,” said Marion Gross, senior vice president and Chief Supply Chain Officer of McDonald’s North America. “This is a bold move and we’re confident in our ability to provide a quality, safe, and consistent supply.“Animal welfare has always been important to us and our customers,” added Gross. “Today’s

announcement is another big milestone building on our work with industry experts and suppliers to improve the treatment of animals.”This week’s news follows other actions announced this year by McDonald’s USA to source only chicken raised without antibiotics important to human medicine by 2017 and to offer milk jugs of low-fat white milk and fat-free chocolate milk from cows that have not been treated with rbST, an artificial growth hormone.

Leaders Launch National Voter Registration Drivethe course of American history,” said SEIU Local 1 Secretary-Treasurer Laura Garza. “However, in order to make their voices heard, Latinos must vote. During Latino Heritage Month of Action, we will run an innovative grassroots campaign to mobilize potential Latino voters. SEIU Local 1 is proud to work with Alderman Ramirez-Rosa, SEIU HCII, the ICIRR, and other partner organizations to help empower Latino families. “The 2016 elections are critical for Latino workers like me,” said SEIU HCII Homecare Worker Irma Alcazar. “From immigration reform to

income inequality, our next president will have a huge impact on issues that affect Latino families. Latino Heritage Month of Action shows how our communities are ready to organize and fight for our rights at the ballot box.” First launched in 2014, Latino Heritage Month of Action will hold an event on September 22 (National Voter Registration Day) and October 15th (the last day of Latino Heritage Month of Action.) The Women’s Business Development Center held its 29th Annual Entrepreneurial Woman’s Conference on Sept. 2nd at McCormick Place-West in Chicago with Reshma Saujani, founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, a national non-profit organization working to close the gender gap in technology, who served as keynote speaker at the

conference. In Saujani’s speech, she said that young women need to consider careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. “There’s no question than technology spurs innovation and has the ability to transform our workforce,” Saujani said. “To leave women out of this growth is really, really shameful.” Saujani continued that schools need to “invite

female entrepreneurs and female coders into our classrooms” to share their stories and get girls excited about technology fields. Girls Who Code anticipates introducing some 10,000 girls nationwide to computer programming by the end of 2015. Designed to augment the growth of women-owned businesses, the conference offered attendees a business trade fair and connect women with corporate and government buyers.

Hit Reality Show #Larrymania Season Finale By: Ashmar Mandou

On Sunday, Sept. 20th singer and songwriter Larry Hernandez will cap off a tremendous season of his hit reality show on NBC UNIVERSO #Larrymania, with a big “thank-you” to fans across the country. “It’s been a wonderful experience for me and for my family,” says Hernandez, during a phone

interview with Lawndale Bilingual Newspaper. “It is a wonderful experience to be able to do a show that documents our lives together as a family and to be able to show our fans the family dynamic.” Moving from Mexico to the States wasn’t an easy transition for Hernandez, who early on had dreams of breaking into the music industry. “When I first

came here, I worked in factories, I worked low paying jobs,” says Hernandez. “But I always took time to make music with the hope to break in the business. When I did, I took the opportunity and worked hard.” So when the opportunity presented itself again for Hernandez to reach a larger audience, he took hold of it. “A friend of mine suggested

I do a reality show after he visited me at home. So I thought, ‘okay, let’s do it.’” Since debuting, Hernandez has generated

a legion of fans across the country, who have tuned in religiously, making his show the number one show on NBC UNIVERSO.

Catch the season finale this Sunday at 9pmET/PT on NBC UNIVERSO.

of Money: The Art of Creating Wealth from Your Heart” (www.thesisterhoodofmoney.com).
