Financia l Report – Year to Date July 1 , 2017 thru October, 2017

July thru October

Weekend Collections YTD $128,564

Expenses YTD $153,439

(Loss) ($24,895)

This year to date “snapshot” of our financial condition is intended to portray what we should be taking in for the weekly collection to pay our expenses. We’re not “in the red” with the bank because we have other income to pay our bills. But ideally we shouldn’t draw on them or we don’t get ahead. Our budget projected that at this time of year we’d be -$10,652 by this time, so once again things are better than they look! From a budget-viewpoint, we’re actually ahead $14,243 ahead where we expected to be at the end of October.

THE YEAR OF MARK PART II

In the year ahead most of our weekend Gospel readings will be from The Gos-pel According to St. Mark. The original Gospel didn’t include St. Mark’s name

as part of the text, so the actual author probably wasn’t the real St. Mark. Like so many of our scrip-tures, someone later added his name to it so that you would be inclined to read it. The real-life Mark was sort of a secretary to both St. Peter and St. Paul, so giving the gospel his name would give it a lot of credibility.

All that matters is that the author of this gospel was the first person to take the oral and written traditions about Jesus that were circulating, and he arranged them into a narrative under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Mark’s Gospel has several characteristics:

It contains vivid descriptions, lots of details, lots of adjectives and adverbs that give a “you are there” feeling.

It’s very fast-paced: there are rapid movement and changes of scene. We see that in the very first chap-ter: 10 events happen in it! Phew!

Jesus appears as a person in a hurry – his ministry is only 2 to 3 years long, and there’s a sense of urgency to his ministry. Time is running out!

Mark uses the word “immediately” a lot. People instantly respond to him.

Locales are important: Galilee is where he debuts and has a lot of acceptance, where Jesus is a figure of power; Jerusalem is the place of opposition and rejection. Other scenes have Old Testament connec-tions and show Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament. His forages outside of Israel reflect the future mission of the disciples to the Gentiles.

Mark puts off revealing Jesus’ true identity until his death and resurrection. We know from the beginning of the Gospel that Jesus is the Messiah, the Anointed One – we just don’t know what kind of Messiah Jesus is. That’s unveiled at the end: Jesus is a suffer-ing Messiah who is also God’s Son.

(Part III next week)

Narthex this weekend.

Please take one per family.

Thank you to Montgomery & Steward for their donation towards the calendars.

Report from Fr. John: the fruits of my labor.

After making 140 phone calls, 136 people stepped for-ward to help us in our ministries. Here’s the break-down (thanks to Kathy Redmond for “crunching the numbers:

28 new Ushers 28 new Greeters 24 new Proclaimers 29 new Communion Ministers 13 new Servers 14 new Sacristans (3 are couples)

This is a good start. Please consider “helping with the chores” when I call you next year. It’s rewarding, a good way to meet good people, increases your appreci-ation for the Mass, and God really will bless you for it!

Religious Retirement Fund Collection Elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests need your help. Through prayer, love, and sacrifice,

they established Catholic schools, hospitals, and more. Yet years of serving for little or no pay have left a shortage in retirement funding. Your gift helps their religious communities furnish necessities such as medications and nursing care. It also helps ensure younger members can continue the good works of their elders. Envelopes are available in the pews this weekend. Please make your checks payable to Christ the King and place in the collection basket. Thank you for your generosity.

Christmas Flower envelopes are avail-able in the pews. Please place them in with the regular collection. Thank you!
