Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that

his government would soon set up a department that would focus solely on the affairs of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“In a few months, you will have a Department of Overseas Filipino Workers,” he said as he faced an ecstatic crowd of about 4,000 OFWs in Bahrain at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium here. He said that with a separate OFW department, the time to process workers’ papers would be reduced from six weeks to three weeks. An OFW department would also help stamp out fly-by-night recruitment agencies, he added. The President promised

the OFWs that his six-year term would be free from corruption, oppression and abusive officials, saying that he wants to solve the problem of corruption in the country to encourage OFWs to return home. “I know that OFWs want an end to corruption so our country would progress. And

maybe the next generation can really come home,” he said. He said OFWs can also help reform the country by being assertive and by shunning all acts of corruption, particularly at the immigration and customs.

Duterte expressed his gratitude to the progressive

Kingdom for welcoming Filipino workers into their country.

“Bahrain has been good to you. I have talked to all officials, including His Majesty the King, and they only have nice words for you. They said they have no complaint about you, that you are kind and patient,” he said.

The Philippines and the Kingdom of Bahrain

signed several agreements that will further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries during President Rodrigo Duterte’s state visit here.

Following the bilateral meeting, President Duterte and His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa witnessed the signing of four agreements including memoranda of understanding aimed at bolstering friendly ties between the Philippines and Bahrain.

Acting Foreign Affairs Secretary Manalo, representing the Philippines, and Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the establishment of a High Joint Commission for bilateral cooperation between the Republic of the Philippines and the Kingdom of Bahrain and the MoU between Bahrain’s Diplomatic Institute and Foreign Service Institute of the Philippines.

Also signed was the protocol amending the convention between the two

countries for the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income and on capital. The protocol was signed by Manalo and Bahrain’s Minister of Finance Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa.

Lastly, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and Bahrain’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Kamal Ahmed signed the protocol to amend and supplement the air services agreement between Bahrain and the Philippines.

Three agreements are set to be signed by the

Philippines and Qatar during President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit aimed at improving collaboration in areas of health, culture, and technical vocational education and training.

According to Philippine ambassador Alan Timbayan, President Duterte and Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Al Thani will witness the signing of the agreements when they meet today (April 16) during President Duterte’s two-day

state visit to the Middle East country. Aside from agreements on healthcare, arts and technical vocational trainings, possible addition would be a waiver on visa for diplomatic passport holders, Timbayan said in an interview.

Also, the ambassador said they are looking forward to the signing of bilateral agreement on the promotion and protection of investments during the President’s visit.

Once such agreement is signed, more investments will come to the Philippines as Qatari companies eye to

diversify their investment to different fields. They see Philippines as one of the best locations for their investment, Timbayan said.

“We are sure on health and then culture and vocational technical education and training,” he said on the agreements to be signed by the two countries. The agreement on healthcare will focus on exchanges of expertise of specialists, research trainers and doctors from both countries. MPs will vote on a proposal to grant citizenship to the

children of Bahraini women at their regular meeting this Tuesday.

The proposal, submitted by a group of MPs, proposes to amend an article in the existing Bahraini Citizenship Act.

Section A of Article 4 of the Bahraini Citizenship Act of 1963 stipulates, “A person shall be deemed a Bahraini national if he is born in Bahrain or abroad and his father, at the time of birth, was a Bahraini national.”

The proposal suggests amending the article by

replacing it with, “A person shall be deemed a Bahraini national if he is born in Bahrain or abroad, and of his parents, at the time of birth, was a Bahraini national.”

This grants the children of a Bahraini woman married to a foreigner the right of obtaining the Bahraini citizenship.

After reviewing it with the concerned authorities, including Interior Ministry, the council’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee issued a report rejecting the proposal. The committee’s report will be discussed and voted on this Tuesday.

The proposal seeks to amend an Article in the Bahraini Citizenship

Act which reads: “A person shall be deemed a Bahraini national if he is born in Bahrain or abroad and his father, at the time of birth, was a

Bahraini national”

A doctor was assaulted by two Sickle Cell

Disease (SCD) patients at the Hereditary Blood Disorder Centre at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) on Friday.

Confirming the incident, Hospitals Affairs Assistant Undersecretary in Health Ministry Dr. Waleed Al Manea said that the Bahraini doctor sustained injuries in the attack.

“The incident created confusion at the SMC forcing security guards and senior officials to intervene. The doctor who was injured received the necessary treatment and a complaint was lodged against the attackers at the police station,” Dr. Al Manea said.

“The medical workers are sparing no effort to provide the best health services to patients.

However, some patients exploit those services, create problems, verbally assault them and sometimes even turn physical,” the official said.

No further information was available on the people involved in the incident.

Referring to Article 222 of the Bahraini Penal Code, Dr. Al Manea affirmed that the attackers would face penal action.

“A punishment of imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months and a fine not exceeding BD50 shall be inflicted upon any person who offends with the use of signs, saying, writing or by any other method a civil servant or officer entrusted with a public service during or by reason of carrying out the duties of his office or service. The punishment shall be imprisonment for no less than three months or a fine of at least BD50 if the offence takes place during the convening of a court sitting and is intended against the panel of judges or against the members of the said panel,” the article states.

Dr. Al Manea called upon patients, especially SCD patients, to adhere to the rules and regulations, and to cooperate with the medical crews, in order to receive the best service.

Long queues for up close and personal experienceManama

From the elderly to the youngest race-car fanatics,

many lined up in large numbers for the ‘meet and greet’ with their favourite Formula 1 drivers in an autograph session that took place from 12.30pm to 1.30pm yesterday. The second day of the 2017 Bahrain Grand Prix saw a larger crowd gathering from the earlier hours of the day itself, mainly due to the autograph session that had many eager fans waiting in long queues for hours to catch a close glimpse of their favourite race car drivers.

Undoubtedly the longest waiting lines were for the race teams ‘Mercedes’, ‘Ferrari’ and ‘Red Bull

Racing’. Speaking to DT News, John Burton and Gayle who were waiting in line for more than an hour, stated how they wanted to get an autograph of Lewis Hamilton and in order to not miss the chance, they positioned themselves in the queue even before the scheduled time.

“It’s Lewis, the greatest sports star, which is why the heat doesn’t matter at all when it comes to waiting for hours,” John said.

The lucky ones who were able to get a closer look of their favourite drivers also managed to click a picture, get their autographs and even share a laugh or two. Considering it to be the major highlight of their attendance of

the F1 in Bahrain this year, DT News spoke to a couple who had come all the way from Western Australia to support and meet fellow Western Australian ‘Daniel Ricciardo.’

81-year-old Ed Williamson stated: “Despite the very long flight of 12 hours, we wanted to come to Bahrain to support Daniel and we love the energy and ambience of this country.”

His wife, Floril stated how they were extremely excited to get his autograph on a picture of their granddaughter and great-grand daughter. “We love the sports and we are glad we were able to come to Bahrain, second year in a row,” she said.

Chanting fans, riveting energy and a roaring welcome is

what made the King of Latin Pop shout back to the crowd: “Shukran Bahrain.”

Last night’s F1 mania concluded with probably one of the biggest concerts to ever take place in Bahrain. Enrique Iglesias had already created a buzz when it was confirmed early March that he will be the headlining performer at the biggest motorsport this year, and the excitement had begun escalating ever since. It was worth the wait as the megastar certainly knew how to keep the crowd on its toes.

The curtain dropped on the second day of the 2017 Gulf Air Formula1 Bahrain Grand Prix extravagantly when thousands gathered around the village vending area were fixated into a state

musical frenzy.Gigantic balloons, fire effects,

laser lights and shooting confetti is what made it an impeccable performance and the perfect way to transit into the last day of this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix. The crowd remained excited, pumped and the energy was tremendous as people swayed to his award winning singles including many of his Spanish hits. Enrique’s global popularity is undeniable, and he is one of the biggest artists ever to grace the stage at the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.

Holding the record for most number-one hits, the 41 year old’s energy was electrifying as he kept the large crowd entertained with his happening live performance. Getting up close and personal with fans as he moved from one side of the

stage to the other, he praised the crowd saying: “You guys are great, “as he concluded on a high note.

His act was followed by that of Steve Aoki - an electronic dance music icon who has collaborated with other major artists such as Linkin Park, Afrojack, LMFAO, among others. Aoki was ranked Best DJ in America by DJ Times in 2015, and managed to rock the airwaves with his hugely popular tracks. Certainly one of the best musical nights to come out of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Evolution of Online Marketing and FinanceWith the introduction of the Internet and the connected

digital world, many businesses have realized that they could target a wide-range of potential customers through the online marketing by placing ads over many of the commonly used websites. Some businesses have leveraged this need by introducing the pay-per-click Internet advertising model, where advertisers pay the website hosting an ad-based on the number of times an ad is clicked. However, the simplicity of this model made it an easy target for fraud. Almost as soon as the first ads appeared, some corrupt hosting sites realized they could generate ad revenue by fraudulently clicking on ads, and they could use scripts to automate the process. Click fraud doesn’t steal data, but it threatens the Internet commerce models and drives up the cost of online advertising through fraud. And like denial of service attacks, click fraud can be perpetrated simply to damage advertisers. Accordingly, the need for analysis software to identify potential click fraud and prevent and report any suspicious activity has grown. In some cases, perpetrators have been arrested and indicted, and advertisers have sued ad publishers to force better surveillance and enforcement.

Businesses, however, did not stop at online marketing – neither did the attackers. These innovations have created an entire business function generally referred to as electronic commerce (or e-commerce), which facilitates the trading of products and services through the Internet. This allowed businesses to list their products and services online, showing their specifications and catalogue prices. CompuServe UK Shopping Centre was the first to open its doors with nine merchants back in 1994. Online banking via the Internet was slower to gain traction, but by 1995, major banks in the US and UK offered banking services via websites.

To increase security of online banking and reduce credit card fraud, the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council defined and mandated a series of basic security practices for organizations that handle branded credit cards. Compliance is verified each year by a self-assessment or an external audit. Among the requirements is that card data must be encrypted when transmitted over public networks. The standard introduced is a global industry initiative that, while not exhaustive, enhances security and security awareness and has denied attackers a one-stop-shopping opportunity for consumer credit card data. It’s made it harder for attackers to steal consumer financial and identity data, and it’s been a major enabler of Internet commerce.

Still, consumers of the banking industry were at risk of credit card fraud or damage from lost cards and copied card stripe information. Accordingly, to reduce the impact of these risks, Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV) credit card standards now require card data to be stored in a chip embedded in the card rather than a magnetic stripe. And they must be validated by a user personal identification number (PIN) rather than a signature, providing two-factor authentication. While there were many early deployments, liability shift (from banks to merchants) didn’t occur in the United States and European Union until 2015.

Chip and PIN technology makes it more difficult for attackers to clone cards. And while it improves security at the point of sale, card-not-present (CNP) transactions—including online payments—receive less protection. As a result, development continues on software solutions that replace the standard, static PIN with a dynamically generated code for online transactions. Such innovations keep hackers searching for ways to break the new systems, and it increases their cost of doing business. But it also offers them more opportunity, because stolen chip-and-PIN-card data is more valuable in cybercrime markets.

While these innovations attempt to enhance the world we live in today, every advancement is dynamic and involves multiple benefits as well as risks. Businesses must be intelligent in choosing the right, affordable and effective security defense mechanisms to facilitate their continuity and growth.

For the government side: The plan specifies efficiency of lamps for government buildings, green government procurement, street lighting and energy management.

For the economic sectors: The plan stipulates tariff restructuring, legislative structure, dissemination of information and data, while for the transport sector, it envisages efficient transport and restructuring

of government support in the sector.

In the industrial sector: The plan includes programmes for industrial companies to raise energy efficiency.

The National Renewable Energy PlanThe National Renewable Energy Plan includes six initiatives.

This includes: solar projects on rooftops, wind power projects on land and sea, large central solar power plant projects, solar home installation requirements and new projects (housing and investment projects), renewable energy requirements in new infrastructure projects such as bridges and railways Ferrous, electric power generation of organic materials extracted from wastewater.

Workshops The opening ceremony of the conference also included a speech by the university President Professor Yusuf Abdul Ghaffar and a speech by a representative of the International Renewable Energy Network.

A series of workshops and lectures by experts and university professors from Britain, Italy, Romania, Iraq and Malaysia are also part of the deliberations.

Women and the World

This is Why Women Shouldn’t Just Quit their Jobs

“She can find another job. Why doesn’t she just quit?” Sexual harassment in the workplace is something that far

too many women have to deal with on a daily basis. Yet when a woman decides to stay despite the harassment, or reports the harassment to a superior, she is called out as to why she didn’t “just quit.” This sort of response is not okay: in the face of harassment, women should not have to leave their jobs. The harassment should instead be addressed.

Asking women why they don’t “just quit” if they are being harassed is similar to asking women in abusive relationships why they don’t “just leave.” Both are a form of victim blaming, placing the need to do “what’s right” on the woman’s shoulders rather than her abuser or harasser. Both questions imply that the situation is the woman’s fault, that if she just left, everything would be okay, that the abuse/harassment would stop.

If the woman decides to quit her job (or leave her abusive partner), the harassment will likely stop (unless the abuser/harasser continues to pursue her). But what about the next woman who comes along? Men who commit violence against women demonstrate patterns of abuse and harassment: it doesn’t just stop at one woman. Perhaps the male employee doesn’t harass any of the other current female employees. But this does not mean that he might not start, nor does it mean he might not harass a new hire.

Furthermore, why is it OK to “reward” a man who has done something wrong? Why should the woman have to give up her job—one that she probably worked very hard to get to—while the man, who has done something wrong, gets to keep his? Bluntly put: why should a man be allowed to get away with a crime?

Women don’t like to report sexual harassment in the workplace, for fear they might be seen as a “problem employee” or worse, especially if their harasser also happens to be their boss. In the latter case they may fear being fired. But the woman who leaves the workplace without getting justice may end up feeling like she was imagining things, or she may believe she should accept such behavior at a future job.

It is the duty of the employer to provide a safe workplace for all. If one employee is making another feel uncomfortable or unsafe, the issue should not just be swept under the rug. Instead of telling women to quit, the harassment needs to be stopped.

China’s Q1 growth stabilises at 6.8pcBeijing

China’s growth stabilised in the first quarter thanks

to rising investments and a recovery in exports, experts said, though they warned the reprieve may be temporary.

According to an AFP survey of 16 economic analysts, the gross domestic product expanded 6.8 per cent in the first three months of this year -- the same level of growth as in the last quarter of 2016.

The official GDP growth figure will be released Monday.

Cheap credit has bolstered the construction sector since last year, attracting savers and speculators who have fuelled

housing prices in large cities and accelerated manufacturing activity.

While the country attempts to rebalance its economy around services and domestic consumption, “the question we need to ask is whether China has returned to the same old property-driven model,” ANZ Bank’s chief economist for greater China, Raymond Yeung, said.

Beijing announced in March that it will maintain a 3pc budget deficit, with 2.6 trillion yuan ($376 billion) invested this year in railway, road and waterway projects.

Foreign trade also showed

improvement as US President Donald Trump backed down on calls for a trade war.

Exports rebounded sharply in March while imports surged by 24pc in the first quarter, reflecting strong domestic demand.

But the momentum is not expected to last: according to the poll’s median full-year forecast, China’s GDP growth will fall to 6.6pc overall in 2017.

The government has aimed for 6.5pc growth, which would mark a new slowdown and the economy’s worst performance in 26 years after a 6.7pc GDP increase in 2016. (AFP)

Files released by the mysterious hacker Shadow

Brokers suggested yesterday the US National Security Agency had penetrated the SWIFT banking network and monitored a number of Middle East banks.

The files, according to computer security analysts, also showed the NSA had found and exploited numerous vulnerabilities in a range of Microsoft Windows products widely used on computers around the world.

Analysts generally accepted the files, which show someone exploiting so-called “zero-day” or hitherto unknown vulnerabilities in common software and hardware, came from the NSA.

They are believed stolen from a hyper-secret

hacking unit dubbed the “Equation Group” at the key US signals intelligence agency.

“The tools and exploits released today have been specifically designed to target earlier versions of Windows operating system,” said security specialist Pierluigi  Paganini on the Security Affairs website.

They “suggest the NSA was targeting the SWIFT banking system of several banks around the world.”

The files appear to indicate that the NSA had infiltrated two of SWIFT’s service bureaus, including EastNets, which provides technology services in the Middle East for the Belgium-based SWIFT and for individual financial institutions.

Via that entry point the

agency appears to have monitored transactions involving several banks and financial institutions in Kuwait, Dubai, Bahrain, Jordan, Yemen and Qatar.

In a statement on its website EastNets rejected the allegations.

“The reports of an alleged h a c k e r - c o m p r o m i s e d EastNets Service Bureau network is totally false and unfounded,” it said.

“We can confirm that no EastNets customer data has been compromised in any way.”

SWIFT said in a statement that the allegations involve only its service bureaus and not its own network.

“There is no impact on SWIFT’s infrastructure or data, however we understand that communications

between these service bureaus and their customers may previously have been accessed by unauthorized third parties.”

“We have no evidence to suggest that there has ever been any unauthorized access to our network or messaging services.”

Shadow Brokers first surfaced last year offering for sale a suite of hacking tools from the NSA. There were no takers at the price stated of tens of millions of dollars, and since then the hacker or hackers have leaked bits of the trove for free.

Analysts say many of the exploits revealed appear to be three years old or more, but have some unknown vulnerabilities that could still be used by other hackers. (AFP)

Apple has joined the list of companies with permits

to test self-driving cars in California, according to an updated roster released on Friday by state officials.

The iPhone maker has disclosed little about its ambitions when it comes to self-driving vehicles, with chief Tim Cook hinting at plans but the company declining to comment for news reports on long-idling rumors.

Late last year, Apple revealed it is investing heavily in autonomous vehicles in a letter asking the government to make it easier to develop self-driving cars.Apple issued the letter because it is “investing

heavily in machine learning and autonomous systems,” an Apple spokesman said in an email at the time.

The California-based tech giant is expected to focus on software systems, letting

partners manufacture vehicles, but would understandably want to be able to test its navigation technology in cars.

Most major auto manufacturers and many technology groups are currently

developing autonomous vehicles, considered to be the future of the automobile, along with electric power, with first production models promised for around 2020.

General Motors this week announced that its autonomous driving efforts, investing $14 million and adding 1,100 jobs in a new research center in San Francisco. While GM is already testing autonomous vehicles through its Cruise Automation unit in California, Arizona and Michigan, the new initiative will ramp up those efforts.

Similar research is being carried out by other automakers including Ford, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota, and by other groups.

Ahmed Malalla, Bahrain Polytechnic’s Director of

Registry, announced that the admission period for the next academic year 2017-18 will commence on Sunday, 9:00am at the Polytechnic campus in Isa Town.

The admission counter will be open from 9:00am to 1:30pm on all working days till Thursday, 1st June 2017.

“The process of applying to the Polytechnic this year will be done through the internet, which has been the case for the past 4 years and received positive feedback.” added Malalla.

The applicant has to fill the online application form through the website (http://www.polytechnic.bh), print the signature page, pay the application fee (BD20 non-refundable) by debit or credit card at the Student Information Centre (Building 8), and submit

the required documents: an original and copy of passport and smart card, one passport size photo, high school transcript, evidence of good conduct (not more than one year old), medical examination certificate from governmental health centre.

The Registry Directorate will then verify the documents, go through the selection process, and set a date for the entry tests.

Due to limited vacancies, the selection of applicants to Bahrain Polytechnic will be ‘very competitive’. Malalla advised

that applicants who meet the minimum high school GPA requirements of at least 70% (to be provided with the graduation certificate), and pass the entry test scheduled to begin on 30th April 2017 are not guaranteed to be selected, as it depends on the programme requirements and the number of vacant seats in that year. Malalla recommends that applicants apply to more than one educational institution to ensure the potential applicant does not miss the opportunity for higher education.

Bahrain Polytechnic offers the following academic programmes: Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of International Logistics Management, Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology, Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Bachelors of Web Media, Bachelors of Visual Design.

Teachers of New Millennium School-DPS hosted welcome assemblies in the new academic year with a stage performances. Principal, Arun Kuumar Sharma addressed the assembly. You’re likely changing your mind about something that has been important to you. Perhaps you’re questioning your job, career path, or choice of a mate. Confusion may dominate your thoughts today. Don’t expect to arrive at any concrete answers by day’s end. This is a situation that will only be resolved with time. Try to be patient.Romance is in the air today. Alas, it seems to rain down on everyone but you. You must have put on your romance-repellent raincoat before leaving the house this morning. Don’t fret. Your time will come. Try to focus your passion on a creative endeavour. If you’ve been thinking about trying your hand at writing or painting, do it now.Your creativity is at an all-time high, so take advantage of it. This would be an ideal day to paint or write. Even though you consider your talents well below amateur status, you may be surprised by what you’re able to produce. Ignore your strict internal editor and work for the pure pleasure of creating. You will be delighted with the results.

Your inspiration and creativity are high today. If you’ve been thinking about taking up painting or poetry, this would be an ideal day to get started. Make sure your perfectionism doesn’t get in the way of your creative urges. You can be a critical editor. For now, don’t worry about the end product. If you enjoy the creative process, the end result will reflect your joy.

It’s bad enough having too many cooks in the kitchen, but when those cooks argue not only about how to cook the meal but also about how to design the kitchen, you know you have trouble on your hands. Tempers are likely to flare today. Everyone has an opinion about how you should decorate your home.

Your self-confidence is at a low point these days, and this is making you especially vulnerable. It’s likely that a recent confrontation with a close friend has you worrying about the overall health of the relationship. With all kindness, you’re overreacting. It’s likely that your mate feels just as troubled as you right now. Why not meet halfway?

You may feel some frustration over your perceived inability to reach an important milestone in your career. It’s possible that you only need to reevaluate the benchmarks you’ve set in order to see that you’ve made more progress than you thought. Remember, ultimately, the time it takes you to reach a goal matters less than the fact that you reach it.

Sometimes you can be too passive and let others trample all over you. Your lack of ego is admirable, but only up to a point. Why let others take credit for your ideas? There could be a situation where you feel compelled to speak up. Protect your rights and defend yourself against an unethical person intent on downplaying your contribution.

You could feel a bit low today due to disappointment in someone important to you. It could be that a mentor no longer supports you or perhaps an authority figure has shown his or her true colours. Rather than casting about for a new role model, why not follow the path that you know is right for you? You’re experienced enough now not to need anyone else to lead the way.

An unethical acquaintance could be spreading unfounded rumours. Don’t take anything you hear today at face value. Get all the facts before drawing conclusions. Equipment being installed or acting up adds to the confusion. If the situation weren’t so frustrating, it would be comical. Take deep breaths throughout the day. Tomorrow things will be on a more even keel.

A longtime friend may become something more today. It could be that there has always been a certain spark between you, but you haven’t been able to acknowledge it until now. Make extra sure that the time is right, however. You don’t want to hurt anyone else’s feelings as you begin to explore the new aspects of this old relationship.

You may be frustrated today. An anticipated romantic encounter may be postponed or cancelled. There’s no reason to consider it a major setback in the relationship. If you feel doubt and uncertainty, it’s likely for other reasons. You’re agitated and not in a good place to make any sweeping judgments.

Beijing

China is seeking Russia’s help to cool surging

tensions over Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions, the country’s foreign minister has told his Moscow counterpart, after Beijing warned of possible conflict over North Korea.

Fears over the North’s rogue weapons programme have soared in recent days,  with a US naval strike force deployed near the Korean peninsula, while President Donald Trump has

warned the threat “will be taken care of” and Pyongyang has vowed a “merciless” response to any provocation.

China  -- the North’s sole major ally and economic lifeline -- on Friday warned that war over North Korea could break out “at any moment”. In a call with Sergei Lavrov later Friday, Wang Yi said the common goal of the two nations was to “bring all the parties back to the negotiating table”, according to a statement on China’s Foreign Ministry website.

Colombo

Sri Lankan soldiers dug through rubbish with

their bare hands yesterday to pull out victims after a huge garbage mountain collapsed on their homes, killing at least 15 people.

Four children were among the dead following Friday’s incident at Kolonnawa on the northeastern edge of the capital, Colombo national hospital spokeswoman

Pushpa Soysa said. The 300-foot (91-metre) high dump came crashing down on neighbouring homes Friday as the country marked the traditional new year.

“We remain on standby, some people who were pulled out of wrecked homes were brought in overnight,” she told AFP. “The search operations are on, so we are expecting more victims to be brought in.”

Pyongyang

North Korea unveiled what could be a new

intercontinental ballistic missile at a giant military parade in Pyongyang yesterday, analysts said.

Nearly 60 missiles rolled through Kim Il-Sung Square at an event to mark the 105th anniversary of the North’s founder, in a show of strength as tensions mount over the isolated nation’s military ambitions. Its ultimate goal is an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the US mainland – something President Donald Trump has vowed “won’t happen”.

Saturday’s parade displayed

devices in increasing order of range and it was four huge green missiles, rolled out on articulated trailers towards the end, that caught the attention of military specialists.

“This appears to be a new ICBM,” Yonhap news agency quoted an unidentified South Korean military official as saying, adding that they are longer than the xisting KN-08 or KN-14 missiles.

Pyongyang has yet to formally announce it has an operational ICBM, but Chad O’Carroll, managing director of specialist service NK News, said the new rockets could be liquid-fuelled intercontinental ballistic missiles, or an early prototype.

The Philippine military announced plans to

create all-Muslim fighting units yesterday, with quotas from the Catholic country’s largest religious minority, as it looks to bolster efforts to tackle Islamic insurgents.

Five percent of all new applications will be allocated for Muslims under the new order, military spokesman Colonel Edgard Arevalo said in a statement, adding the eventual aim was to have a dedicated brigade or division to be deployed in the country’s troubled south.

Arevalo said the Muslim quota, which roughly reflects

the proportion of the religious minority in the population, would help the army operate in areas where it has been previously viewed with suspicion by local people.

“Most of our Muslim brothers and sisters perceive the deployment of almost 100 percent Christian soldiers in their communities as invading or occupational forces,” he said, adding that fellow Muslims would be more aware of religious or cultural “sensitivities”.

The southern region of Mindanao, the ancestral homeland of the Philippines’ Muslim minority, has been locked in a separatist

insurgency since the 1970s, with the conflict claiming more than 120,000 lives.

While the major rebel organisations have for years observed a ceasefire with the government as part of peace efforts, there are breakaway factions opposed to compromise and other gangs that have declared allegiance to the IS.

Earlier this week, security forces clashed with suspected Islamic militants from the Abu Sayyaf kidnap group on a popular resort island, the first attack on a key Philippine tourist destination in recent years. (AFP)

Tunis

A Tunisian zoo that closed after a crocodile was

stoned to death has reopened, with extra guards and new signs instructing visitors not to throw things at the animals.

The Belvedere Zoo in central Tunis shut its gates in March after a public outcry over the animal’s death.

Images shared on social media showed the dead crocodile’s head beside what appeared to be a bloodied paving slab and another large rock.

The reptile’s death was the latest in a string of scandals at the 50-year-old zoo, which has long been in need of

renovation. Pictures of the site filled with

litter caused an outcry on social media last year. “Some people, when they see a lion sleeping,

want to throw a pebble at it to get it up. We ask them to stop,” said Taoufik Yaacoubi, a guard at the zoo for 20 years. “It’s not normal.”

Title-chasing Tottenham thrashed Bournemouth

4-0 to move within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea, while Everton climbed to fifth place with a 3-1 win over Burnley yesterday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are hot on Chelsea’s heels as the title race enters the final furlong and their dominant display at White Hart Lane keeps them in with a chance of being crowned champions for the first time since 1961.

Mousa Dembele opened the scoring with a close-range strike in the 16th minute and Son Heung-Min’s cool finish doubled Tottenham’s lead three minutes later.

Harry Kane, making his first start since suffering an ankle injury five weeks ago, scored his 20th league goal this season with a predatory 48th-minute effort.

Vincent Janssen bagged a rare goal in second-half stoppage time as Tottenham chalked up seven successive league wins for the first time since 1967.

Kane is the first Tottenham player to score at least 20 league goals in three successive seasons since Jimmy Greaves in the 1960s.

Chelsea responded last weekend after Tottenham

had trimmed their lead, beating Bournemouth 3-1, but Antonio Conte’s men face a far more testing trip to Manchester United on Sunday.

At Goodison Park, Everton improved their prospects of qualifying for Europe as they moved above Arsenal and United.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka broke the deadlock in the 49th minute before Sam Vokes equalised from the penalty spot for Burnley three minutes later after being brought down by Joel Robles.

Ross Barkley started for Everton amid the controversy over a British tabloid columnist’s unsavoury criticism of the England midfielder and it was his shot that deflected off Ben Mee for a 71st minute own goal.

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku struck three minutes later for his 24th league goal this season.

FightbackLeicester suffered a dispiriting warm-up for their decisive Champions League quarter-final clash as they squandered a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace.

Craig Shakespeare made only two changes ahead of Tuesday’s home second leg with Atletico Madrid, when

Leicester will try to overturn a 1-0 deficit.

Beaten by a controversial penalty from Antoine Griezmann in Madrid, the Foxes took the lead in the less glamourous surroundings of Selhurst Park thanks to a Robert Huth header in the sixth minute.

Jamie Vardy doubled Leicester’s advantage in the 52nd minute.

But Palace had enjoyed shock wins over Arsenal and Chelsea recently and they got one back through Yohan Cabaye two minutes later before Christian Benteke capped the fightback with a 70th minute header.

Hull’s hopes of avoiding relegation suffered a blow as they lost 3-1 at Stoke.

Marko Arnautovic put Stoke in front in the sixth minute before Hull drew level through Harry Maguire in the 51st minute.

Peter Crouch nodded Stoke back ahead in the 66th minute and Xherdan Shaqiri sealed the points in the 80th minute to leave fourth bottom Hull only two points above the relegation zone.

Third bottom Swansea were unable to take advantage of Hull’s slip as they lost 1-0 at Watford after Etienne Capoue netted in the 42nd minute.

S u n d e r l a n d remain on the brink of relegation despite salvaging a 2-2 draw against West Ham at the Stadium of Light.

Andre Ayew put West Ham ahead in the fifth minute before Wahbi Khazri marked his first Sunderland start since October with a fortuitous 26th minute equaliser, the swirling wind carrying his c o r n e r

past Hammers

g o a l k e e p e r Darren Randolph.

It was bottom of the table Sunderland’s first league goal in 701 minutes and their first at home since January 14.

James Collins restored West Ham’s lead two minutes after half time, but Fabio Borini rescued a 90th-minute equaliser before Hammers defender Sam Byram was sent off in stoppage time. (AFP)

Madrid

Isco struck in stoppage time to send Real Madrid six points

clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga after twice coming from behind to beat Sporting Gijon 3-2 yesterday.

Madrid can all but secure a first league title in five years with victory when they host Barca next weekend.

But not for the first time this season they needed a late show after Duje Cop and Mikel Vesga put Sporting in front early in both halves.

Isco’s fine individual effort and a towering header from Alvaro Morata ensured neither lead lasted more than a few minutes.

And Isco sealed the comeback when he drilled home from the edge of the box.

Barca can close the gap back to three points when they host Real Sociedad later on Saturday.

Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane made nine changes from the side that beat Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in midweek.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema were left out of the squad entirely alongside the injured Gareth Bale, whilst Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Marcelo had to settle for a place on the bench.

Cop missed a late penalty with the chance to snatch a draw when the sides last met in November.

However, the Croatian made amends when he finished off a lovely Sporting move by volleying home Vesga’s scooped pass to put Sporting in front after 14 minutes.

The lead lasted just three minutes as Real responded with

a wonder goal of their own.Isco received Lucas Vazquez’s

pass inside a crowded penalty area but somehow dribbled past two Sporting defenders before curling the ball into the top corner.

Despite dominating possession for the remainder of the first half Real had to wait until early in the second period for another clear chance to take the lead.

Home goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar somehow turned Nacho’s header just out of the reach of Morata, w h o was awaiting to

apply the final touch

for a tap-in.

Sporting went straight up the other end to retake the lead as Vesga looped a measured header into the far corner.

Once again, though, Sporting’s defensive deficiencies were quickly exploited by the European champions as Morata towered above his marker to head home Danilo’s cross.

Madrid then peppered the Sporting goal, but didn’t make the breakthrough until injury time as Isco’s effort from the edge of the area had too much power for Cuellar.

Defeat means Sporting remain five points from

safety in 18th with just six games remaining.

Borussia Dortmund players and fans paid

tribute to defender Marc Bartra as they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 yesterday in their first Bundesliga match since the midweek bomb attack on their team bus.

Germany winger Marco Reus scored on his return after six weeks out and Sokratis Papastathopoulos and leading scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were

also on target in a home victory which allowed Thomas Tuchel’s side to all but wrap up a top-four finish and boost morale at the end of a traumatic week.

Three bombs containing pieces of metal rocked the Dortmund bus on the way to Tuesday’s Champions League home quarter-final match against Monaco and left Spanish international Bartra hospitalised.

The first leg was eventually

played on Wednesday but Dortmund lost 3-2, their players later admitting they were still shell-shocked by the attack.

The team was buoyed before kick-off on Saturday as Bartra was released from hospital following surgery on a broken wrist.

The Dortmund squad held his number five shirt aloft as they celebrated in front of their home fans after the final whistle.

Valtteri Bottas upstaged his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton by

grabbing pole position yesterday, but then said he is not dreaming of a maiden victory in Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix.

The 26-year-old Finn, who has replaced retired 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg as team-mate to the three-time world

champion Briton, remained phlegmatic and practical after a close floodlit qualifying session.

“We need to enjoy it for a short period of time, to enjoy what you’ve done, but the main thing is tomorrow,” said Bottas.

“But there’s no point to start dreaming. We need to look at everything we can, work as a team and plan a good strategy for

the race. We need to focus for the race and get the maximum out of it.

“But definitely it’s a good place to start and I think, as a team, we can be really strong tomorrow and hopefully get a one-two -- the first one for the year.”

Bottas was congratulated warmly by Hamilton after wrecking the Englishman’s hopes of a hat-trick of season-opening poles and a seventh in succession.

Max Verstappen topped the times for Red Bull in yesterday’s hot, windswept and closely-contested final

free practice ahead of today’s Bahrain Grand Prix.In a session that was halted briefly after Frenchman Romain

Grosjean crashed in his Haas-Ferrari car, the 19-year-old Dutchman clocked a best lap in one minute and 32.194 to finish one-tenth of a second clear of nearest rival Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.

Sebastian Vettel, who shares the lead in this year’s embryonic drivers’ championship with Hamilton, was third fastest for Ferrari ahead of Valtteri Bottas in the second Mercedes. Kimi Raikkonen was fifth in the second Ferrari ahead of Felipe Massa of Williams, Australian Daniel Riccirdo in the second Red Bull and German Nico Hulkenberg of Renault. Carlos Sainz was ninth ahead of his Toro Rosso team-mate Russian Daniil Kvyat. After early installation laps, Frenchman Esteban Ocon of Force India was briefly quickest before Spaniard Carlos Sainz planted his Red Bull on top of the times.

There was little for the fans, enduring the scorching sunshine, to enjoy before the session was halted by a red flag after 38 minutes when Frenchman Romain Grosjean spun and crashed at Turn Four, damaging the front of his Haas car.

In the severe heat, the tyres were over-heating and this caused a wild moment from Verstappen on his way to the quickest lap, at the time, of 1:33.249. Verstappen remained quickest ahead of Massa with 18 minutes remaining. Both Ferrari and Mercedes decided it was time to join the action. Vettel ran wide on his first lap as Raikkonen, and then Bottas, clocked fastest laps before Hamilton, who had suggested on Friday that the ‘daytime’ sessions were pointless ahead of a floodlit race, came out.

Before the Englishman had a chance to go for a genuine quick lap, Vettel took over on top with a lap in 1:32.750 – just 0.004 seconds quicker than Bottas – to confirm that a tight qualifying scrap was in prospect. The two-team battle was extended to three when Verstappen clocked his fastest lap with three minutes remaining before Hamilton secured second for the session, one-tenth adrift of the Dutchman, but nearly half a second clear of Vettel. Teenager Al Faisal Al Zubair (21 minutes, 22.541) of Oman

in the silver category celebrated his maiden victory with a near flawless performance from pole in the penultimate race of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East 2016/17 season yesterday, which is a support race to the 2017 Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir.

The race was over 10 laps and a total of 53.874kms with 15 drivers in the fray.

Charlie Frijns (+0.678 seconds) of the Netherlands driving for Frijns Structural Steel ME in the gold category came in second, while the series leader and this season’s champion Ryan Cullen (+3.861) also in the gold category came in third to complete the podium.

Fourth to sixth places went to Dylan Pereira (LUX, +4.407, gold), Bandar Alesayi (KSA, +9.965, silver) and Magnus Ohman (SWE, +14.999, bronze, Team Sweden).

Rounding out the top eight was Christophe Bergstrom (SWE, +17.826, bronze, Team Sweden) in

seventh and Bandar Mardini (UAE, 19.614, silver) in eighth.

Team Bahrain interests lay with young debutants Isa Abdulla Al Khalifa and teammate Isa Salman Al Khalifa, alongside countryman Hamad Al Khalifa who all raced well on their home circuit. At one stage all three Bahraini drivers were directly behind each other attacking and defending in an effort to grasp valuable points.

Isa Salman Al Khalifa (+20.812, bronze) and a GCC Rookie finished highest among the local drivers and followed in tenth by Isa Abdulla Al Khalifa (+21.080, silver), while Hamad Al Khalifa (+35.170, bronze) pushed hard for a top ten finish but unfortunately left the track briefly when trying to overtake and settled for twelfth position.

After the race Isa Salman Al Khalifa said: “I didn’t have a great start today and racing in the hot conditions was tough. Throughout the race I managed to climb a n d

few position but couldn’t extend the lead enough to keep them. I finished third in the bronze category and second in the Porsche GCC Rookie championship. I am hoping for a stronger performance tomorrow to be able to keep my dreams alive of winning my category at the last possible opportunity.”

Isa Abdulla Al Khalifa added: “The race was really good today, great competition and remained fair and clean. I managed to retain my starting position throughout which was an achievement for me. We are going to look at a few things on the car and hopefully in the last race of the season we can push a bit more and finish higher in the field.”

Meanwhile, Cullen’s third place confirmed he secured the overall Drivers Championship for the first time in his career as he has seven wins from 11 races and has never finished a race this season lower than four, according to the regulations all drivers are allowed to drop their worst result.

Behind Cullen the fight continues for the final overall podium in the driver standings and cross the GCC Rookie Category as well as the Silver and Bronze categories with many battles still to be won.

The championship concludes today with the twelfth and final race of the season starting at 3.30pm, following Bahrain hosting the opening round, Dubai the

second and third rounds, Abu Dhabi the fourth

and again Bahrain with the fifth

and the sixth and final round this weekend.
