  • Gethsemane: Preparing for Your CrossMark 14:32-42

Message 1 in our 3-part Easter series entitled RSVP Required: How will you respond to Christ this Easter?Sunday, April 10, 2011Speaker: Phil Hainaut

  • Pressure: The nature of the cross experience For Jesus: Emotional and physical distress (vs. 33,34)

He took Peter, James and John along with him and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, he said to them.

  • Pressure: The nature of the cross experience

For Jesus: Emotional and physical distress (vs. 33,34)

For the disciples: Temptation (v. 38)

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

  • (v. 37): he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. Simon, he said to Peter, Are you asleep? Couldnt you keep watch for one hour?

(v.40): When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

    (v. 41): Returning the third time, he said to them, Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough!

  • Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devils schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

  • Pressure: The nature of the cross experience

Watchful prayer: The answer to the pressure of the cross

The need for watchful prayer (vs. 32, 34, 35, 37-39)

  • (v. 32) Jesus said to his disciples, Sit here while I pray. (v. 34) he said to them. Stay here and keep watch. (v. 35) Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed (v. 37) Simon, he said to Peter, are you asleep? Couldnt you keep watch for one hour? (v. 38) Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. (v. 39) Once more he went away and prayed.

  • Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come backwhether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: Watch!

  • Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.

  • This is why it is said: Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. Be very careful, then, how you livenot as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

  • But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.

  • Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.
