Whether you are an antique enthusiast or interested in the

business of industry, the Sunbury and Big Walnut community continues to enjoy successful economic development. From the local businesses gracing the historic Sunbury square and unique eating establishments, to the antique shops on and around the square, there con-tinues to be a vast array of

shopping and business oppor-tunities for visitors and residents alike.

West of the Sunbury square in the Sunbury Mills Plaza lies the new Kroger store, which, along with the necessities of a grocery store and jobs for the community, brought additional development such as Verizon Wireless, Great Clips, China Express, LA Cleaners, and the significant retail presence of Goodwill Retail and Donation

Center. Sunbury Chiropractic Center has recently opened their new state-of-the-art facility, neigh-boring other out lots in the vicinity and promising future development for shopping and restaurants.

Community Parks and ProgramsJ.R. Smith Park in Sunbury acts as

host to many Little League activities and features a baseball diamond, picnic area, playground equipment, a skate park, and football and soccer fields. The Big Walnut Conservation Club also hosts Little League activities. Freedom Park lies behind the Sunbury Church of the Nazarene on State Route 61 in Sunbury and hosts many com-munity events and sports teams, as well as a disc golf course. Athletic associations in Sunbury consist of the Girls Softball Association, Junior Baseball Association, Soccer Association, Youth Athletic Association, Youth Basketball Association, and the Big Walnut Athletic Boosters.

Harlem Bicentennial Park, near Center Village, has a picnic area with a shelter house and baseball diamonds.

Ruffner Park in Galena has baseball diamonds, a picnic area with a shelter house, and a nice playground. McNamara Park, located in Genoa Township, boasts a playground, shelter house, soccer fields, and a direct connection to the Ohio to Erie Trail, a biking and walking path that runs through Genoa Township to the southern part of Galena. The village of Galena is also proud of their boardwalk on Hoover Reservoir, where you can enjoy the wildlife and waterlife.

The Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial was founded and established in 2005 by local Vietnam veteran Jerry Jodrey, who had a vision to build a beautiful tribute to all of the men and women from Ohio who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our country in the Global War on Terrorism since September 11, 2001. With the help of many volunteers his vision became a reality when the Memorial was dedicated on June 30, 2007. The Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial was honored by Ohio House Resolution 30 as the state’s only rec-ognized memorial honoring all Ohio military personnel killed in the war on terrorism.

Each spring, a large group of dedicated cancer survivors, their families and friends, and those who have lost loved ones to this dreaded disease gather at the Big Walnut High School Track to “Relay for Life.” Participants gather sponsorship support to raise money for cancer research, with many local businesses, churches, and organizations forming teams to participate. The commitment of the

community to support this cause, year after year, is evidenced by the hours of planning by many individuals that go into making this event one of the highlights of the area.

The mission of Big Walnut Friends Who Share is to improve the living conditions of families and individuals in need/crisis who reside in the Big Walnut School District by securing donated items (including clothing, food, household furnishings, cash contribu-tions, etc.) and then distributing them free of charge to those in need.

John Scanlan, an avid athlete and commu-nity supporter of youth basketball and football, died of cardiac arrest in September 2008 at age 44. In 2009, the first “Run for John” memorial 5K run and walk fundraiser was held on the square, raising more than $12,000. “Run For John” will continue to be held annually to honor his memory and dedication to the Big Walnut community, with all proceeds donated to Big Walnut Friends Who Share.

Many opportunities are available for local youth to participate in various 4-H clubs. Community service and fundraising are a large part of the clubs’ commitment to the area. The community has also made a com-mitment to these youth to provide a venue to showcase their projects, whether they are crafts or livestock, at the Delaware County Fair and the Hartford Fair.

Rain or shine, each Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon from mid-May to mid-October, you can visit the Sunbury square to purchase a wide variety of homemade and homegrown goods produced locally. Close parking, restroom access, and great vendors have helped this event become a staple of the community. Check the Chamber’s newsletter for themed weekends ranging from “Children’s Safety & Wellness” to “Civil War Re-enactment.”

A Solid Educational Foundation

Big Walnut Local Schools was created in 1950 by the merger of Sunbury and Galena schools. Two years later Harlem Township School joined the district.

The mission statement of the Big Walnut Local Schools reads: “The mission of the Big Walnut Local Schools is to inspire and guide each student to his or her maximum poten-tial.” In order to accomplish the mission, Big Walnut Schools strives to achieve the vision of:

Located approximately 25 minutes north-east of downtown Columbus, Big Walnut Local Schools provides instructional services

for children who live in the greater Galena and Sunbury communities. Big Walnut is located in Delaware County, the fastest- growing county in Ohio. With three elemen-tary schools (four in 2010), a middle school (becoming a grade 5–6 building in 2011 with the addition of a new junior high in 2011), a high school, and a partnership with the Delaware Area Career Center, the district serves over 3,000 students and employs more than 300 staff members.

A diverse and rigorous curriculum has been designed to meet and exceed state and national standards for student learning and achievement. Special education and gifted programs meet the unique needs of students.

Big Walnut schools provide a challeng-ing and dynamic learning environment that fosters excellence, opportunity, and innova-tion in meeting the educational needs of their students and community. Big Walnut middle school and high school students’ scores consistently exceed state averages on the Ohio Graduation and Ohio Achievement Tests. Over 85 percent of Big Walnut students score at the “Proficient” level or higher on

these tests. For the last four years, Big Walnut Schools has achieved the state of Ohio’s “Excellent” designation for outstanding stu-dent learning.

Big Walnut athletic teams participate in the highly competitive Ohio Capital Conference (OCC). The OCC currently sponsors 25 inter-scholastic sports for 32 member schools that compete in four divisions. Big Walnut has a well-deserved reputation as a resilient and winning athletic program. In 2007 the Big Walnut football team won the state champi-onship, and the team advanced to the semi-finals in 2008.

Higher EducationThere are numerous opportunities for stu-

dents and adults to pursue higher education at one of the many nearby colleges or uni-versities. Among the choices are Otterbein College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware Area Career Center, Mt. Vernon Nazarene University, Ohio Dominican University, Capital University, Franklin University, DeVry University, and The Ohio State University, along with its many nearby branches.

Village of SunburySunbury-oh.com

William and Lawrence Myers, brothers from Pennsylvania, platted the village of Sunbury on Nov. 9, 1816. It is believed they named the village for Sunbury Township, Pennsylvania.

Today, Sunbury surrounds the intersec-tions of State Route 36/37 and State Route 3 and is the central hub of “Big Walnut.” With a 2008 census population of approximately 3,300, the village continues to grow rapidly, as does the rest of the county. New home developments, shopping, and health care facilities continue to grow, and the Big Walnut Local School District strives to keep up with the demands of this growing community. The village is proud of its historic square, which is the location of many events throughout the year.

Zoar changed its name to Galena in 1834, some 25 years after Gilbert Carpenter had founded the village. Early settlers included soldiers from the American Revolution, along with others who arrived here, mostly from Pennsylvania.

Located directly south of Sunbury, Galena is also a growing community and has a “square” of its own, around which

are located quaint shops, restaurants, busi-nesses, the Hoover Reservoir boardwalk, and the central offices for the Big Walnut Local School District.

The first group of settlers arrived in this township in 1804 after Col. Moses Byxbe of Berkshire County, Mass., purchased 8,000 acres here. Most came from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The original Berkshire Township was founded in 1806.

The present township is located around and west of the Sunbury village proper. The new Northstar development, located near the I-71 interchange, offers a professional-caliber golf club and luxury condominiums and will welcome new shops and additional housing within the next few years. This is a very rural area, and you will still find open pastures with horses and cattle grazing.

Genoa TownshipGenoatwp.com

Jeremiah Curtis of Hartford, Conn., was the first settler here in 1804. In 1816 Elisha Bennett named the township for Genoa, Italy. Most settlers came here from Pennsylvania and New York and were farm-ers and shepherds.

Located south of Galena and bordering the Polaris area and Westerville, Genoa Township

is the most densely populated township in our area. It continues to grow at a fast pace and is home to a portion of the Ohio to Erie Trail, attracting many outdoor enthusiasts. The large portion of the scenic Hoover Reservoir located here attracts abundant wildlife and fishermen.

Harlem Township Harlemtwp.com

Named by Dutch settlers for Harlem, N.Y., and Harlem in the Netherlands, this township was formed from Sunbury Township in 1810. Centerville (now Center Village) was laid out in 1848, and the smaller town of Harlem was platted in 1849.

Located in the southeastern portion of the Big Walnut area, the township’s residents look forward to celebrating their Bicentennial in 2010! With more than half of its 27 square miles remaining primarily agricultural, the rural character of this township remains in the forefront.

Most likely named after Kingston Township in Pennsylvania, Kingston became a township in 1813. Settlers came from Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Presbyterians raised the money to build a small frame church in 1827, which became known as Old Blue Church and


which was the center of township activities for many years.

Still primarily rural, Kingston Township lies in the northwest section of the Big Walnut area. Here you’ll find the Major General William Starke Rosecrans Memorial, honoring this Kingston Township native’s service to the Union in the Civil War.

Porter TownshipPortertwp.org

This township, formed between 1826 and 1827, received its name from Robert Porter of Philadelphia, who was awarded acreage from President John Adams for military services. The communities of East Liberty and Olive Green are located here.

With an area of about 26 square miles, Porter Township is home to about 1,800 residents and remains primarily agricultural. It’s also home to the historic Chambers Road covered bridge, the only covered bridge remaining in Delaware County. The Porter-

Kingston volunteer fire station is located in Olive Green.

Between 1830 and 1835, what had been Sunbury Township became Trenton Township (named for Trenton, N.J.). The first set-tlers arrived from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and Kentucky. The communities of North Condit, Condit Station, and South Condit are located in Trenton Township.

The township is noteworthy as being the home of Sunbury’s Crystalline Erratic. Deposited by a glacier, it’s the largest crys-talline erratic in the area. The “big rock” is located on private property north of Hartford (Croton) Road and measures 22 feet long, 18 feet wide, and 8 feet high, with a circum-ference of 72 feet. Folklore says the rock takes 32 men standing shoulder to shoulder to make a ring around it.

Vital statistics and environmental health offices are located on the second floor at 1 West Winter Street, Delaware, while the offices of immunization, prenatal/family planning, and Women, Infants and Children Nutrition and Counseling are located at 3 West Winter Street.

Programs include nursing and personal health services, nutrition, environmental health (food protection and public safety, resi-dential services, and plumbing inspection), vital statistics/data management, emergency response and solid waste, health promotion, and epidemiology.

Services include adult and childhood immunizations, flu shots, blood pressure screenings, public pool and spa inspec-tions, school environmental health

inspections, playground safety inspections, on-site septic evaluations, subdivision plat reviews, rabies control, mos-quito control, birth and death records since 1867, AIDS/HIV education, and car seat and helmet distribution.

For more than 100 years, Grady has been known for providing compassionate, qual-ity care. Located in the heart of the city of Delaware, with related health care facilities through Delaware County, the hospital has more than 200 physicians on staff in nearly 30 specialty areas.

In addition to traditional health care ser-vices like maternity, heart services (includ-ing a low-risk cardiac catheterization lab), cancer services, orthopedics, emergency care, surgery, and inpatient medical care, Grady offers a wide range of outpatient services, including surgery, laboratory testing, X-ray and diagnostic testing, occupational health services, hospice and home health care, and occupational and physical therapy, along with a variety of educational and wellness programs offered through the Grady Life Center. The hours at the Urgent Care are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The Urgent Care in Sunbury is open 362 days a year, only closing for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. The Sunbury Urgent Care was recognized as “Business of the Year - 2009” by the Sunbury/Big Walnut Area Chamber of Commerce.
