Sun Life Financial is committed to the prevention of diabetes and its related complications and has committed over
Why focus on diabetes?
Sun Life wants to empower people in the surrounding communities to protect what they love most in their lives by mitigating the risk factors and effects of diabetes.
Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Millions of people in the United States are undiagnosed, which means they are likely not managing their health the way they should. Diabetes is also a leading driver of health care costs in the U.S. with approximately $176 billion in direct medical costs for diagnosed diabetes and another $69 billion for the cost of reduced productivity due to diabetes.
The burden of diabetes• 1.4 million Americans 20 years or older are newly
diagnosed with diabetes each year— that’s one every 23 seconds
• 21 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with diabetes and require support to manage the disease and prevent related complications
Diabetes is a leading cause of major critical illnesses, including:
• Kidney failure• Heart disease • Stroke• Blindness• Amputations• Hypertension
The statistics are alarming, but it’s not too late to make a positive change. Type 2 diabetes can often be prevented by doing simple things like making healthy dietary changes, increasing physical activity, losing weight, and visiting a doctor to get screened. Visit diabetes.org/stats.
