The inspiration for Thank You, Bees came from spending time with my son when he was a preschooler. We lived in an apartment in the city with no backyard, so every chance we got we went for long walks, often ending up at a nearby park. We spent a lot of time together exploring our neighborhood, and like most small children, my son was curious and openhearted. Making connections between everyday things that he saw, ate, and used helped build an awareness and sense of gratitude naturally. Seeing the connections between things and giving thanks was like completing a circle that we drew over and over again, and while doing so, the idea for Thank You, Bees was born.

That we get so much from the natural world is indeed a huge gift. But if we are only getting without gratitude, then we are really just taking. And unless we feel gratitude, then taking eventually becomes unsustainable and destructive. Gratitude doesn’t have to be a heavy-handed lesson for young people, but instead, like all things well learned, shown through example. Parents and caregivers can gently weave gratitude into everyday experiences.

I hope Thank You, Bees opens the gratitude heart inside all readers a bit wider . . . and helps as a reminder of the amazing gifts and connections that we as human beings have to the natural world and our home, planet Earth.

Toni Yuly is the author-illustrator of the picture books Early Bird, Night Owl, and Cat Nap. After many years as a librarian, she now dedicates herself to designing, painting, and writing all day. Toni Yuly lives in Bremerton, Washington.
