Goals

• To create powerful structures and practices to strengthen the highereducation students engagment in the job market and to enhance theiremployability

• To strengthen the co-creation between higher education and workplaceswhere students learn and workplaces and teaching in higher education arerenewed

• To make use of alumni networks in e.g. assessment of learning at work

• To develop learning at work as a part of higher education studies: solutions for validation of work, such as studification agreement models

• To ensure that workplace, guidance and assessment competence at highereducation matches the challenges of the world of work (incl. digital solutions)

• To disseminate research-based knowledge on work during studies, employment, factors connected with employability and best practices on co-operation between workplaces and higher education

• To network internationally: by presenting project results on European fora and by getting acquainted with best practices abroad

Toteemi

• ”Person, who has a totem, possesses the power and existence of that totem. A Totem can also unite a group of people or the whole tribe”– Through times, a totem has been a venue for creating culture, gathering

together and highlighting community

– In Toteemi project, we are creating modern culture for higher educationtogether with students, companies and the public sector

– In Toteemi, we expand the tribe of comptence in three party spirit

• Students struggling to grasp (contextualize) content• Anxiety to perform: frustrated/anxious/afraid

• Crossing cultural boundaries• Power distances/loosing face vs asking questions• Withdrawn or aggressive; embarassed

• Limited exposure to materials/skills lab/simulation• Competition ”me first” mentality

• Social intellegence & Emotional integrity• Attitudes/Beliefs/Values

Purpose: This branch of the TOTEEMI R&D project, will use virtual simulation in conjunction with traditional simulation to i) identify factors related to the competence development of first year nursing students who study alongside others from varying nationalities, in a foreign language, ii) evaluate congruence between first year nursing students’ self-assessments during virtual simulation and their ability to prioritize care and utilize clinical reasoning during traditional simulation exercises. It is hoped that by adopting the perspective of the learner, this research will identify and communicate any gaps in the level of perceived learning on behalf of students, while developing effective educational practices, combining both virtual and traditional simulation.

TOTEEMI: Supporting Competency Development through Virtual Simulation

Page 22: SUN CONFERENCE - cdn0.laerdal.com

On an organizational level, virtual simulation supports the main aims of this educational institution as seen in Arcada’s Erasmus policy statement report, dated 15.1.2013. They state, that the variety of study methods, which include eLearning, blended learning and virtual learning platforms are used in everyday teaching and learning on campus. (Arcada 2013) Thus, incorporating virtual simulation is one concrete example of this aim in practice.

Research type: Action research

Stakeholders: First-year multicultural nursing students, ArcadaPatient Safety and Learning Center and the company LaerdalMedical.

Methodology: This is a qualitative study using an inductive approach. Students will be invited to give feedback via questionnaires twice, after the first and second semester of study. (i.e. December 2017 and May 2018).

Page 24: SUN CONFERENCE - cdn0.laerdal.com

Timeline: This project begins August 2017 and ends June 2018. There are two phases. The first phase takes place during the first semester of study when virtual simulation (vSim) is introduced. Students will be invited to participate via questionnaires upon the completion of their first semester. The second phase begins during the second semester of study after students use the vSim software in conjunction with traditional simulation exercises.

Page 25: SUN CONFERENCE - cdn0.laerdal.com

The findings will hopefully aid in identifying any perceived gaps in current practices and act as a catalyst in allowing new strategies/models, both virtual and traditional to be developed that will benefit the clinical competency development of students who study in a foreign language with others from varying backgrounds during their time at university. In the future, it is hoped these new models/strategies will become an effective way for students to learn together in multi-cultural, multi-professional clusters nationally and internationally.

Student EngagementStudents are motivated to use the software and

feelings of empowerment/confidence during skilldevelopment & simulation increased

Learning OutcomesIncrease in efficiency & productivity (students active) Increased content

coverage and changes in work-flow during competence development(students take the lead)

Students engage with others with different backgrounds providing a working-life environment instead of a sterile (segregated) one.

Things to consider when purchasingnet-based products and services

Page 30: SUN CONFERENCE - cdn0.laerdal.com

Root of the challengePotential conflict between agenda’s in the business and higher education sectors in how education materials are used and the length of time learners have access to the materials. It seemed,

that the design of various net-based learning products can imposed restrictions on users that focused on protecting the

product/service rather than supporting learning

Changing Student DemographicNot only is class size increasing but diversity. In the

pilots, learners expressed a wish to experience content in different languages instead of being limited to one

(different content in different languages)
