West Africa Regional WorkshopFrom February 28th to March 3rd, Action Against Hunger together with partners UNICEF, Save theChildren and Terre des Hommes, hosted a Regional Civil Society Workshop. The workshop broughttogether civil society representatives from 12 countries in West Africa, Chad and Madagascar. The aimof the workshop was to strengthen civil society capacity in West Africa, with a specific focus onanalysing and monitoring nutrition policies as well as developing plans for regional advocacy. Asia Regional WorkshopIn January, alliances from 6 countries across Asia (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepaland Pakistan) came together for a regional workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia. The aim was to support the

work of the SUN Civil Society Alliance (CSA) in Indonesia, drawing on the experiences of otheralliances in the region. The event was attended by the Director General of the Ministry of Health, theDeputy Minister of BAPPENAS and the Director of Health and Community Nutrition at BAPPENAS.Representatives from the UN, donor and business networks also joined. Members of the CSAs led

skills sessions on budget advocacy, BMS code interpretation and engaging parliamentarians and themedia. Following the workshop, alliances in the region have formed a regional group to continue toshare experiences and identify opportunities for joint advocacy. The Indonesia CSA will continue to

develop their strategic plan to support the government’s new roadmap for nutrition.

International Women’s Day – 8th March

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day was #BeBoldForChange and members of theSUN Civil Society Network (CSN) used the opportunity to highlight the crucial role of nutrition in

enabling women to fulfil their rights. In partnership with CSONA in Malawi and PANITA in Tanzania, theGraca Machel Trust called on global citizens to #BeBoldforNutrition by making bold statements

highlighting harmful nutrition practices that need to change. Mwandwe Chileshe from the SUN alliancein Zambia spoke on UNZA Radio about why nutrition is vital for women to fulfil their potential at work.

And in Pakistan, the alliance, together with the Micronutrient Inititative, organised a seminar onmaternal nutrition with over 120 women leaders, CSOs and female parliamentarians.

Learning Route

In January, following the first ‘Learning Route’ in Rwanda, we hosted a webinar to share lessons fromthe programme with the wider SUN movement. During the webinar, SUN Movement Coordinator Gerda

SUN Movement Global Gathering 2017 AnnouncedThe 2017 SUN Movement Global Gathering will take place from November 7-9 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.Since 2012, the SUN Global Gathering has brought together SUN Government Focal Points, as well ascivil society, donor, UN and private sector partners. 2017 Joint- Assessment Exercise LaunchedThe Joint-Assessment exercise measures progress towards the four strategic objectives of the SUN

Movement. The exercise is best undertaken as a participatory process that brings together relevant in-country stakeholders, including representatives from government, civil society, science and academia,donors, the UN, businesses, and other relevant actors. On the 23rd February, Alive and Thrive, with the support of Dhansiri, arranged a seminar inDhaka bringing together a group of female parliamentarians (see picture left). The aim was toincrease understanding of mainstreaming nutrition into policies, with a special emphasis on theimportance of

breastfeeding, and maternal, infant and young child nutrition. The SUN CSA was invited as a specialguest to provide information on scaling up nutrition initiatives, and recommendations on how national

Burkina Faso The Civil Society Alliance in Burkina Faso (RESONUT) have released a song to raise awareness of

CambodiaThe SUN Movement Coordinator, Gerda Verburg, visited Cambodia in February. During her visit the

CSA presented an overview of their achievements so far, including the fantastic work they have beenleading on enforcement of the BMS code. The alliance have been piloting a code monitoring tool in 5provinces, which will then be rolled out in more provinces. You can find some useful guides on BMS

Chad

The CSA facilitated input into the high level sanitation and water for all partnership meeting with ActionAgainst Hunger Chad and partners. The aim of this was to influence the Ministers of Finance and

Water in advance of a high level meeting on 19-20 April. The meeting, in Washington D.C., will focuson the topic of financing WASH Sustainable Development Goals and their impact on other SDGS

Latin America: El Salvador, Guatemala, PeruIn February, during their first regional coordination call of 2017, CSAs from Peru, Guatemala and El

CS-SUNN together with PRB delivered a training event on communicating nutrition information anddata to policy makers. Participants were selected CSOs from the SUN CSA and government partners.During the training they learned how to develop effective messages and policy briefs. There were also

sessions looking at negotiations, accountability and working with the media.

Nepal CSANN, NNF and NTAG jointly organised a Nutrition Information Sharing (NIS) meeting on 9th March.The NIS meeting is an informal gathering where individuals and organisations working in nutrition come

together to share and discuss different issues, developments and concerns related to nutrition.Presentations made during the NIS meeting included: “Nutrition status in Nepal: Pros and Cons” by Dr.

Khem B. Karki, Member Secretary- NHRC and "Iron Folic Acid Supplementation in Nepal: anOverview” by Mr. M.R. Maharjan.

Kyrgystan

Kyrgyz Civil Society Alliance, the Ministry of Health and the National Centre of Mother and ChildWelfare (NCMCW), with support from UNICEF, marked World Birth Defect Day with an event in

Bishkek. Members of Parliament, the Coordinator of the SUN Movement in Kyrgyzstan and the Directorof NCMCW opened the event. The event included a flash mob and attendees took selfies with

campaign messages to highlight the role of nutrition in preventing birth defects. The alliance alsoparticipated in TV and radio programmes speaking about the link between nutrition and birth defects.As a result of the event, a group of young volunteers are now establishing a youth branch within the

PakistanThroughout March, the CSA in Pakistan led a series of enagements with parliamentarians. They held a

meeting with 10 parliamentarians in the Punjab province, hosted a dinner with 27 parliamentarians,including the Health Minister, in Karachi and a 'high tea' for parliamentarians in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

province. A positive outcome has been the agreement to create a parliamentary group that willspecifically work on nutrition. The alliance has also been delivering a series of budget advocacy

PhilippinesOn 22-23 February, the SUN Civil Society Alliance Philippines (PhilCAN) was officially launched in

Manila. The two day event gathered civil society alliances from various islands across the Philippinesas well as representatives from UNICEF, FAO, the Philippines Department of Health and the National

Nutrition Council of the Philippines. Following this, PhilCAN organised an ‘inter-island nutritionawareness caravan’ in order to increase awareness of SUN and key nutrition policies amongst

TanzaniaPANITA held a 2 day meeting for the region of Eastern Tanzania and Zanzibar. Members met to

discuss the progress of their activities and share experiences in capacity building. The main topic of theregional meetings this year was the role of civil society in the implementation of the new national

nutrition plan (National Multi-sectoral Nutrition Action Plan - NMNAP).PANITA also hosted a regional technical and advocacy meeting on adolescent health and nutrition in

Dar es Salaam with participants from Kenya, Ethiopia and Senegal. The focus of the meeting wasweekly iron folic acid supplementation as an effective preventative approach for public health

ZimbabweFebruary saw the successful launch of the Zimbabwe Nutrition Association. The event was supported

by Save the Children and ZCSOSUNA and was officially launched by the Director of Family Health.

ZCSOSUNA members had an opportunity to showcase examples of nutritious foods. ZCSOSUNA also

shared their 2017 budget analysis with nutritionists and who, as a result, will continue to work with the

alliance to lobby for increases in financial resource allocation to the Ministry of Health.

Zambia

The alliance has been focussed on engaging Members of Parliament in the nutrition caucus, with aspecific focus on women parliamentarians. The alliance is currently working on Nutrition Profiles

for Zambia with the National Food and Nutrition Commission and FANTA. They are also focussingon advocacy around complimentary feeding, in light of a lot of marketing of foods targeted at

children. Mwandwe, the Coordinator of the CSA, was also selected to attend GlobalCitizen's nutrition workshop for young leaders in nutrition.

Atelier régional en AsieEn janvier, les alliances de 6 pays d’Asie (Bangladesh, Cambodge, Indonésie, Myanmar, Népal

et Pakistan) se sont réunies lors d’un atelier régional à Jakarta, Indonésie. Le but de l’atelier était desoutenir l’alliance de la société civile en Indonésie, en s’appuyant sur les expériences d’autres

alliances en Asie. Le directeur général du ministère de la Santé, le ministre adjoint de BAPPENAS et ledirecteur de la Santé et de la nutrition communautaire de BAPPENAS, ainsi que des représentants de

l’ONU, de réseaux de donateurs, du secteur privé et d’organisations de la société civile dans toutel’Indonésie ont participé à cet événement. Des représentants des alliances de la région ont dirigé des

sessions sur les compétences nécessaires pour aborder le plaidoyer budgétaire, l’interprétation ducode international de commercialisation des substituts du lait maternel et la mobilisation des

parlementaires et des médias. Suite à cet l’atelier, les alliances de la région ont formé un grouperégional pour continuer à partager les connaissances et à rechercher des opportunités de plaidoyer

commun. L’alliance d’Indonésie continuera à développer son plan stratégique pour soutenir la nouvellefeuille de route du gouvernement pour la nutrition.

Journée internationale de la femme

Cette année le thème de la Journée internationale de la femme était #BeBoldForChange (êtreaudacieux pour le changement) et à cette occasion les membres du Réseau de la société civile SUNdu monde entier ont mis en avant le rôle crucial de la nutrition pour permettre aux femmes de réaliserleurs droits. En collaboration avec CSONA au Malawi et PANITA en Tanzanie, le Graca Machel Trust a

appelé les citoyens du monde à le rejoindre sur #BeBoldforNutrition en faisant des affirmationsaudacieuses soulignant les pratiques de nutrition néfastes qui doivent changer. Mwandwe Chileshe, de

l’alliance SUN en Zambie, a expliqué sur UNZA Radio, pourquoi la nutrition était essentielle pourpermettre aux femmes de réaliser leur plein potentiel au travail. Et au Pakistan, l’alliance de la sociétécivile SUN, en collaboration avec l’initiative pour les micronutriments, a organisé un séminaire sur la

nutrition maternelle avec plus de 120 femmes dirigeantes, des organisations de la société civile et desfemmes parlementaires.

Burkina Faso Le Réseau de la société civile pour la nutrition (RESONUT) a lancé une chanson pour sensibiliser

CambodgeLa coordinatrice du Mouvement SUN, Gerda Verburg, s’est rendue au Cambodge en février. Au cours

mondiale des anomalies congénitales par un événement à Bishkek. Les membres du parlement,le coordinateur du Mouvement SUN au Kirghizistan et le directeur du NCMCW ont ouvert

l’événement. Cet événement a eu la visite d’une foule éclair et les participants ont pris des selfiesavec des messages de la campagne afin de souligner le rôle de la nutrition pour éviter les

Amérique latine : Le Salvador, Guatemala, Pérou

En février, au cours de leur premier appel de coordination régionale de 2017, les alliances de lasociété civile du Mouvement SUN du Pérou, du Guatemala et du Salvador se sont penchées surleurs réalisations clés en 2016 et ont arrêté leurs priorités pour 2017. Ces trois pays ont mis en

œuvre leurs engagements politiques et ont réalisé des activités de mobilisation et desensibilisation des communautés sur les pratiques d’allaitement maternel et les 1 000 jours de la

NigeriaLa société civile pour le renforcement de la nutrition au Nigeria (CS-SUNN), en collaboration avec lePRB, a organisé une formation sur la communication des informations et données nutritionnelles aux

décideurs. Les participants étaient des organisations de la société civile sélectionnées au sein del’alliance et quelques partenaires du gouvernement. Durant cette formation, ils ont appris comment

élaborer des messages et des notes d’informations politiques et comment communiquer des donnéesde recherche aux décideurs afin d’obtenir leur engagement. La formation comprenait également des

PakistanL’alliance du Pakistan a dirigé d’importantes activités de mobilisation auprès des parlementaires. Le 27

mars, les membres de l’alliance ont organisé une réunion avec 10 députés dans la province duPendjab, suite à laquelle les députés ont formé un groupe chargé de travailler spécifiquement sur la

nutrition.L’alliance a invité des parlementaires, y compris le ministre de la Santé, à un dîner à Karachi, pour

demander l’augmentation du budget dans le district et l’extension d’un nouveau projet. Un thé dinatoirepour les parlementaires a également eu lieu dans la province de Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), au coursduquel le gouvernement local de la province a déclaré que la malnutrition était une urgence. L’alliancerecommande la création d’une feuille de route pour répondre à la crise et l’affectation de ressources à

sa mise en œuvre.Elle a également organisé une série d’ateliers de formation sur le plaidoyer budgétaire dans plusieurs

TanzaniePANITA, a organisé une réunion de deux jours pour la région de l’Est et Zanzibar. Les membresont partagé leurs expériences diverses, en particulier sur le renforcement de leurs capacités, etont discuté du progrès de leurs activités visant à rehausser le niveau de la nutrition. Le thème

central des réunions régionales cette année est le rôle de la société civile dans la mise en œuvredu nouveau plan d’action national multisectoriel sur la nutrition (NMNAP), la nutrition et le

développement dans l’objectif d’ajouter des nutriments aux cultures.PANITA a également organisé une réunion régionale technique sur le plaidoyer en faveur de la

santé et de la nutrition des adolescents à Dar es Salaam pour des participants venant du Kenya,d’Éthiopie et du Sénégal. Durant cette réunion, l’accent a été mis sur la supplémentation

hebdomadaire en fer et en acide folique, comme approche préventive plus efficace dans lesprogrammes de santé publique.

Zimbabwe

Février a vu le lancement de l’association du Zimbabwe pour la nutrition. L’événement a été financépar Save the Children et ZCSOSUNA et a été inauguré par le directeur de la Santé familiale. Les

membres de l’alliance de la société civile ont eu l’occasion de présenter quelques aliments nutritifs.ZCSOSUNA a également communiqué son analyse budgétaire de 2017 à des nutritionnistes, quitravailleront désormais avec l’alliance pour intervenir auprès du ministère de la Santé en faveur de

l’augmentation des ressources financières affectées à la nutrition.

Zambie

L’alliance a centré ses activités sur la mobilisation des membres du groupe parlementaire pour lanutrition, et en particulier celle des femmes parlementaires. Taller Regional de AsiaEn enero, las alianzas de seis países de Asia (Bangladés, Camboya, Indonesia, Birmania, Nepal y

Pakistán) se reunieron para asistir a un taller regional en Yakarta, Indonesia. El propósito del taller fuecontribuir al desarrollo de la Alianza de la Sociedad Civil de SUN en Indonesia, aprovechando lasexperiencias de otras alianzas de Asia, e impulsar una coordinación continua en toda la región. Alevento asistió el director general del Ministerio de Salud, el viceministro de BAPPENAS (MinisterioIndonesio de Planificación Nacional del Desarrollo) y el director de Salud y Nutrición Comunitaria,

además de representantes de la ONU, la Red de Donantes, la Red de la ONU y diversas OSC quetrabajan en toda Indonesia. Los representantes de cada una de las alianzas de la región realizaron

sesiones de capacitación en promoción presupuestaria, interpretación del código de sucedáneos de laleche materna y sobre cómo involucrar a los parlamentarios y los medios de comunicación. Como

resultado del taller, las alianzas de la región formaron un grupo regional con el fin de continuarcompartiendo experiencias e identificar oportunidades de promoción conjunta. La alianza de Indonesia

continuará desarrollando su plan estratégico para apoyar la nueva hoja de ruta del Gobierno enmateria de nutrición.

Día Internacional de la Mujer: 8 de marzo

El tema del Día Internacional de la Mujer de este año fue #BeBoldForChange (Sé valiente para lograrcambios) y los miembros de la Red de la Sociedad Civil de SUN en todo el mundo aprovecharon la

oportunidad para destacar el papel clave de la nutrición para que la mujer pueda ejercer sus derechos.En colaboración con CSONA, de Malaui, y PANITA, de Tanzania, la Graca Machel Trust hizo un

llamado a los ciudadanos del mundo a ser valientes para lograr cambios por medio de declaracionesaudaces que pongan de relieve las prácticas de nutrición dañinas que deben cambiar. Mwandwe

Chileshe, de la alianza de SUN de Zambia, explicó en UNZA Radio por qué la nutrición es crucial paraque las mujeres puedan desarrollar su potencial en el ámbito laboral. En Pakistán, la alianza de SUN yMicronutrient Initiative (MI) organizaron un seminario sobre nutrición materna con más de 120 mujeres

líderes, OSC y mujeres parlamentarias.

Ruta de aprendizajeEn enero, tras la primera Ruta de Aprendizaje en Ruanda, organizamos un seminario en línea para

compartir lecciones aprendidas gracias al programa con todo el Movimiento SUN. Durante elseminario, la coordinadora del Movimiento SUN, Gerda Verburg, anunció los ganadores del Premio al

La Reunión Global 2017 del Movimiento SUN se llevará a cabo del 7 al 9 de noviembre en Abidjan,Costa de Marfil. Desde el 2012, la Reunión Global del Movimiento SUN ha reunido a todos los puntosfocales SUN en los gobiernos del Movimiento SUN, así como a sus socios de la sociedad civil, losdonantes, las Naciones Unidas y del sector privado. BirmaniaEl Gobierno de Birmania celebrará una reunión de alto nivel sobre nutrición los días 15 y 16 de junio, a

la que se ha invitado a participar a representantes de la sociedad civil internacional y nacional.

NepalCSANN, junto con la Fundación de Nutrición de Nepal (NNF) y el Grupo de Asistencia Técnica de

Nepal (NTAG), organizó de forma conjunta una reunión de intercambio de información sobre nutriciónel 9 de marzo de 2017. Las reuniones de intercambio de información sobre nutrición son reunionesinformales donde las personas y organizaciones que trabajan en este campo se congregan en una

plataforma en común para intercambiar y analizar diversos temas, novedades y preocupaciones conrelación a la nutrición. Entre las presentaciones realizadas en la reunión de intercambio de

información, destacamos: «Nutrition status in Nepal: Pros and Cons» [Estado de la nutrición en Nepal:pros y contras], por el doctor Khem B. Karki, secretario miembro del Consejo de Investigación de

Nigeria

La alianza Fomento de la Nutrición de la Sociedad Civil de Nigeria (CS-SUNN), junto con la Oficina deReferencia de Población (PRB), realizó una sesión de capacitación sobre cómo comunicar información

y datos de nutrición a los responsables de la formulación de políticas. Los participantes eran OSCseleccionadas de la alianza y algunos organismos gubernamentales colaboradores. Durante la

capacitación, aprendieron a preparar mensajes, a elaborar informes de políticas y a comunicar datosde investigación a los responsables de la formulación de políticas para obtener sus compromisos.

También hubo sesiones que cubrieron temas como negociaciones, rendición de cuentas y el trabajocon los medios de comunicación.

Pakistán

La alianza en Pakistán ha impulsado algunas colaboraciones muy positivas con parlamentarios. El 27de marzo celebraron una reunión con diez parlamentarios en la provincia de Punjab. Como resultado

de la reunión, los parlamentarios formaron un equipo que se dedicará a trabajar de forma exclusiva enel ámbito de la nutrición.

Zimbabue

En febrero se inauguró la Asociación de Nutrición de Zimbabue. El evento fue patrocinado por Savethe Children y ZCSOSUNA, y lo inauguró oficialmente el director de salud familiar. Los miembros de laASC tuvieron la oportunidad de exhibir alimentos nutritivos. ZCSOSUNA también compartió su análisis
