PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT REPORT

by D. Jeanne Kimber

We hope everyone checked out the North Hill Com-munities Local Growth Planning initiative and took advantage of the opportunity to express your thoughts about Highland Park—what is good and what is not, what you want to see in the future and what concerns you have. That phase of the project was scheduled to close November 25th, but you can stay informed and signup for updates by visiting https://engage.calgary.ca/NorthHill?redirect=/northhill.

Last month’s Planning and Development Report dis-cussed the land use zoning R-CG and R-CGex. One ap-plication for a land use redesignation to R-CG at 202 32 Avenue NE will be going before the Calgary Planning Commission on Thursday November 15th. The pro-posed development for the site is a 4-unit rowhouse with small basement suites, and a 4-car garage (https://developmentmap.calgary.ca/#property/LOC2018-0171 and https://developmentmap.calgary.ca/#property/DP2018-3573)

Other developments pending or underway include:• Solar panels will be installed on top of the roof of

James Fowler High School• The Development Permit (DP) application for a 4-unit

rowhouse at 3809 2 Street NW has been approved, and is pending conditions of approval being met

• A DP application for a commercial and multi-family residential unit at 3624 Centre Street NE is currently under review by the City. This is the former Fas Gas site, and the Community Association has urged a thorough environmental assessment. The site is also within the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) 600 m. radius for the future 40th Avenue Green Line station and would logically support higher density. (https://developmentmap.calgary.ca/#property/DP2018-4368)

• A multi-residential unit at 3408 Centre Street NE is still pending review. The Community Association had expressed concerns about the building design, which were also concerning to the City. We are awaiting receipt of revised plans (https://developmentmap.calgary.ca/#property/DP2018-2235)

• An application for land use redesignation has been submitted to the City for the site occupied by the Cen-tre Street Church West Campus on Centre Street NE. You may have learned previously that the Church had

sold this property, although they will continue to use the building there for the foreseeable future. The appli-cation for land use would allow for multi-storey apart-ment buildings, some with commercial storefronts. The redesignation process can take many months (https://developmentmap.calgary.ca/#property/LOC2018-0235)

• A DP for a cannabis store at 3904 1 Street NE is currently under review. It should be noted that cannabis stores also require approval and licensing by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC). (https://developmentmap.calgary.ca/#property/DP2018-4653)

The Community Association office receives the plans for Development Permit and Land Use Redesignation applications. If you want to see what is being proposed near you, then contact the Hall Manager (Carolyn) at [email protected] or 403-276-6969.

HIGHLAND PARK PRESCHOOL UPDATE

Christmas is just around the corner and the stu-dents have been busy learning about the Spirit of Giving this holiday season! We’ve been taking some incredible ‘body breaks’, including some amazing yoga! The students have had some unique sen-sory experiences and have been working hard at problem solving and fine motor with the building of unique structures! We collected nonperishable items for the Calgary Food Bank to kick off our Spirit of Giving. We wish you all a wonderful win-ter break, full of making family memories, staying active and spending quality time with your loved ones! Just a reminder, classes resume January 7, 2019. We are looking forward to hearing some fab-ulous stories from the students about their winter break memories!

We’d like to remind our parents and fellow families to write a Google review and Facebook review and your name will be entered in a draw for your choice of a few awesome prize baskets!

We are hosting our open house for interested fami-lies January 17, 2019 from 5:30-7:30PM, an oppor-tunity to meet our teachers, tour the class, chat with current families and see some of the work our stu-dents complete! We’d love to see all of you, you’ll have firsthand opportunities to register your child in the 2019/2020 preschool year by attending the Open House!

HIGHLAND PARK UPCOMING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

For more information about anything below, please contact Carolyn, our Hall Manager at [email protected] (new email) or 403-276-6969. To volunteer for an event, please contact Anne at [email protected] (new email) or 403-276-5048.

Ongoing: If you are new to Highland Park or just haven’t been added to our community email list yet, please send your contact details (name, email, address & phone) to our new email address: [email protected]. We sometimes receive information about events & opportunities after the newsletter deadline and want to share it with as many community residents as possible. We will never use your contact information for anything other than community-related content. We are using MailChimp, which allows us to create a nicer layout, embed videos, and also better complies with Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation. If you haven’t received your first email in this format already, we don’t have you on our list – so please get in touch at [email protected]! Also, don’t forget to visit our website: www.HighlandParkCommunity.ca and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

We Need You! Volunteers are the heart (and hands!) of this community and we have a number of current op-portunities to get involved, meet your neighbours and make a meaningful difference in Highland Park. From helping maintain the outdoor rink (see below!) to help-ing out with seniors’ luncheons to helping out with events and much more, there is something for every level of experience and area of interest. Please contact [email protected] or visit our Vol-unteer Page.

Outdoor Rink Volunteers Needed: More volunteers are needed to ensure we all have awesome outdoor ice to skate on all winter. If you are interested in being part of our rink-building and maintenance volunteer crew, please get in touch with us at [email protected]

Buchanan Food Hampers: Support local families by donating food or grocery gift cards (any amount, any store) to Buchanan School for their hamper program for students and their families. Drop off your donation to the school by December 12th.

Saturday, December 15 from 12 to 2pm: Christmas Extravaganza at the Hall. Bring the family for some holi-day fun, games, food and entertainment.

January 21 to 25 & February 4 to 8: Buchanan School students will be using our outdoor rink for their daily Phys. Ed. activity. We like to make these skating periods extra special with hot chocolate and cookies afterwards, so we are recruiting volunteers to help each morning and afternoon. Contact us at [email protected] if you can help.

Saturday, February 2: HPCA Family Skate Day – join us for our annual date to get outside and enjoy our out-door rink. The Skate Shack will be available onsite for borrowing skates if you don’t have your own. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details.

Playground Revitalization: Planning for the new play-ground is in full swing as we explore equipment and other amenity options (e.g. benches, surfacing materi-als) for the new playground which will be sited on the north end of the field beside the Community Hall. As we continue to apply for grants, we still need all the help we can get from our community members to reach our goal of $15,000 (added to other sources of funding in-cluding grants) and get this playground project off the ground!

3 Ways to Donate:• Online: using a credit card or PayPal account. Visit

www.parksfdn.com, click the DONATE NOW button from the Community-Led Projects Page. Specify ‘High-land Park Community’ in the PayPal or Credit Card Pay-ment page where it asks the question “Which project are you supporting?”

• By mail: mail in a completed donation form and cheque.• By phone: Parks Foundation Calgary accounting de-

partment (403) 974-0751

Please note: for donations of $100 or more, make sure you check the “share my address with the Parks Founda-tion” box in order to receive your tax receipt in the mail.

Food Security Conversations: We are shifting gears from large conversation cafes to private, one-on-one discussions to get a better feel for specific issues re-lated to accessing healthy food. Anne Naumann & Ro-salind Kohut will be speaking to residents at various neighbourhood events, and residents may also con-tact Jennifer DiMarzo, Highland Park’s City of Calgary Social Worker, at [email protected] to make arrangements to meet with Anne or Rosalind to share their thoughts and experiences.

Student Ministry Update from Northminster United Church

Hello All,

My name is Rachel Myers-Jordan and I’m your student Dia-conal Minister. I would like to thank you again for giving me the opportunity to work with Northminster United Church to complete my first field placement. Over the last 2 years I worked with you to fulfilling the requirements for Christian Education and Worship field placement for my education. I have completed my first of 4 Field placement requirements for my Course at the Centre for Christian Studies.

I have also started taking the external masters level uni-versity theology courses. So far, I have taken Women in Hebrew Scriptures, which counted as a Hebrew Scriptures Themed Credit, Intro to Christian Scriptures, and the first part of Christian History. I plan to complete the second part of Christian History this fall, which will leave me with 5 more masters level university courses to complete in the next 2 years.

I have completed 5 of the 12 circle course requirements for the Diaconal Ministry Program. I will be traveling to Win-nipeg in March to complete two more circles and will be trying the new online format this winter. The Online circle is called “Ministry as Listening”, and the two intensive style circles in Winnipeg are called “Power and Privilege” and “Health, Pain, and Trauma.”

This fall, I have started my second field placement for school. I will be volunteering with the Aboriginal Friendship Centre for my Social Justice Field Placement. The Social Jus-tice field placement gives me the opportunity to work in an organizational setting providing opportunity for involve-ment with a marginalized population outside of my own experiences. The Aboriginal Friendship Centre has partner-ships with many other organizations and support networks throughout the city. They help and support the aboriginal community in our city to connect to, access, and navigate the social services and support programs available, as well as offering cultural and spiritual learning opportunities to help them express their authentic self.

So far, I have been helping with two different women’s pro-grams and a Cree Language Class. Each month they offer different programs and learning opportunities, providing me with a variety of places to volunteer and experience So-cial Justice Ministry. I’m really excited about what I’m going to learn and experience this year!

Many Blessings, Rachel M-J

by Gail Fleck

As we begin to make preparations for the Christmas season and the new year, it’s natural to think about our friends and neighbors and have gratitude for the great place that we live in. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for over 30 years and it has become as familiar to me as an old Elton John song.

I love this community and decided a while back to re-connect with it by attending one of the Highwood community monthly meetings. I was impressed by the people on the board—they’re an enthusiastic and dy-namic group of people! From the rink and swimming pool renovations to all of the activities that the social committee was organizing, I could see that there was a lot going on. I signed up to be the board’s secretary. It’s a pretty simple job, really. I get to spend time with wonderful people that make positive change in my community.

As the winter snow deepens, the sound of hockey sticks on the ice at the rink echo down to my house. I’ve heard that sound every winter for many years, and I love knowing that it will continue for a long time to come. If you love anything about this community, consider com-ing out to a meeting and saying hi to your neighbors. We’re at the hall every second Tuesday evening of the month. We’re also holding our AGM on January 26, and all are welcome.

Happy Holidays!Gail Fleck,Secretary

The Cubs boys and girls age 8 – 10 we meet on Thursday evening 6:30 to 8 pm in the Scout room downstairs next to the Greenview Room. We have had a very busy start of the year, starting off with a camp at Camp Woods, the cubs stayed in tents, helped with the cooking, had fun on the challenge course and canoed on the lake. Our program is youth-led, and we are trying to have them set the directions and activities that the group is doing. We held a bring-a-friend night at Con-federation Park and had a fire, cooked hot dogs, and toasted marshmallows. One of the Cubs started the fire using dryer lint and flint and steel, no matches. We have been building a haunted house for all sec-tions to come. They have come up with the plan and have been building the parts. As part of our community we will be holding a service at the field of crosses commemorat-ing the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. In the next few meetings, we will be com-pleting the learning process, so the cubs can get their permits to be able to use stoves and make fires. If you think this is something you would like to try out, you are welcome to join us or contact us at [email protected]

To whom it may concern,

The Federation of Calgary Communities (the Federation) is the support organization to over 230 small non-profit organiza-tions, including Calgary’s 151 community associations. These 151 volunteer-run organizations positively impact the life of Calgarians every day by offering endless opportunities close to home, fostering a sense of belonging by bringing neighbours together, and being a voice for community life educating and informing residents on important issues and activities taking place in their neighbourhood.

One of the main tools community associations use to keep their residents informed on what’s going on in the community is their community newsletter. Calgarians have grown to rely on these monthly publications to find news and updates from their community association, City Councillor, provincial MLA, as well as other stakeholders like the City of Calgary, Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, and much more.

Community newsletters not only keep residents informed on important happenings, but they also help foster Calgary’s uniquely small town feel in our large, urban city. These month-ly newsletters have grown to include resident and volunteer profiles, showcasing neighbourhood assets, local business fea-tures, and more. In doing so, community newsletters truly help community associations work towards being hubs for neigh-bourhood life by showcasing the many people and places who make the community a great place to live, work, and play.

For over a decade, community associations have been fortu-nate enough to have their monthly community newsletter published and delivered for free by the publishing company. In recent years, with the economic decline in Calgary, this luxury is now at risk, with community newsletter publishers strug-gling to find advertisers to offset their costs, and Canada Post’s delivery fees continually rising.

The Federation of Calgary Communities believes that commu-nity newsletters are essential to community life here in Calgary, and we support the value they bring to all Calgarians, organiza-tions, businesses, and the city of Calgary as a whole. Without funding support or reduced delivery fees for community news-letter publishers to continue providing these monthly publica-tions for our city’s community associations at low or no cost, we are at risk of losing these essential resources that connect Calgarians to both their neighbourhood and their city.

Sincerely,Leslie EvansExecutive Director
