Welcome to the World Agri-Tech Investment

Summit in San Francisco

In the twelve months since we last met here in San Francisco, investor interest in agricultural technologies and solutions has continued to soar despite pressure on commodity prices. The need to rethink agricultural practices and harness innovation to meet global food demand is clearly becoming the most critical challenge – and opportunity – of this decade.

The presence here of more than 400 agribusiness leaders, growers, technology suppliers, R&D institutes and VC investors reflects both the importance of finding game-changing solutions and the scale of the impact if we can get it right. By coming together in this forum we can share and learn from each other’s experiences and define the priorities for the next phase of agri-tech innovation and investment.

We are honored to welcome such an outstanding speaking faculty to the summit, and I encourage everyone to make the most of the expertise we have on the stage by asking questions and engaging in debate with our panellists throughout the event. This year we are also asking all delegates to vote for the presenting technology companies which you think have the most disruptive solution and the best go-to-market strategy. Votes will be collated and the inaugural World Agri-Tech awards will be presented at the close of the summit.

I would particularly like to thank our sponsors and exhibitors for their support for this summit, and encourage you to visit them during our networking breaks. We also look forward to hearing from a total of 18 innovative technology showcase companies over the next two days: It’s exciting to feature such a diverse range of ideas and solutions this year and we anticipate that this will be a summit busy with new deals.

Roundtable discussion groups, our networking drinks reception, and the ability to arrange 1-1 meetings during the summit create extensive opportunities to connect with new partners and forge new alliances. The Rethink team will also be available throughout the summit to facilitate introductions, and please don’t hesitate to ask us if you have any questions.

As we look ahead to next year, and to our sister summit in London in November, please take the time to share with us your thoughts, feedback and suggestions on this important event. Your input is essential to ensure we continue to build exciting and informative forums that are of real value to your business.

I wish you a fruitful and enjoyable summit.

AgriMetis develops natural product derived compounds to protect crops from weeds, fungal diseases, and insect pests. AgriMetis both discovers novel active ingredients and develops cost effective routes to make them. Natural products are complex molecules, which are produced in small amounts in response to environmental cues, historically making them difficult and expensive to work with. This has limited their use for crop protection. AgriMetis is working to overcome these challenges using recent advances in synthetic biology and chemistry.

AgriMetis

APSE, headquartered in St. Louis, MO, has developed a technology to enable RNAi, a versatile method of non-GMO gene regulation, to reach economically viable levels of production for crop protection applications. While RNAi holds incredible potential as a bio-pesticide, RNA can be expensive to synthesize, especially in terms of large-scale high purity production suitable for agricultural purposes. APSE technology promises low cost high purity RNA for RNAi applications.

BioLumic’s novel technology makes light a controllable input for large scale outdoor growing. BioLumic exploits UV Photomorphogenesis - a process that activates molecular pathways that improve plant responses to environmental stress, with resulting increased crop survival, superior size at harvest and greatly improved crop consistency. BioLumic’s first product, a UV Seedling Treatment System, is being trialled by a large grower in California. BioLumic’s second product, a UV Seed Treatment System, is in an early stage of development.

Kultevat

Kultevat, Inc., has introduced a new class of alternative rubber by combining genetic breeding and chemical process engineering to produce natural rubber from the Taraxacum kok-saghyz or “TKS” a.k.a. Russian Dandelion. Kultevat’s technology platform converts TKS into bulk natural rubber, as well as fermentable sugar syrup and feedstock by-products, in a capital-efficient manner. Optimizing the value of all plant-derived products and co-products is the essence of a clean, renewable, efficient manufacturing process which produces great products, great profits, and a minimum of waste.

PowWow uses its data analytics platform to deliver valuable information to growers in the field to produce more crops with less water. Unlike other AgTech vendors that require new hardware devices or ask growers to enter their own data, PowWow leverages existing data to provide value on day-one with no upfront cost. As more growers use the platform, it can generate more insights. As a result, the company doubled its revenue per acre from $12 to $24 in 2015.
